And a wonderful metaphor it is too!
I don't have the book with me, but I recall it's Faramir in the Two Towers, talking about Gollum. Am I right?

Mariska Greenleaf 12-05-2003 04:57 AM

Yes yes, that's it!

Evisse the Blue 12-08-2003 09:37 AM

"Hate brings forth hate"
Name the circumastance it refers to.

Guinevere 12-25-2003 06:06 AM

This is a very good quote, but it is so general that I've no idea where it could come from.
I definitely need a hint... please!

Evisse the Blue 12-26-2003 04:00 AM

HINT: It's from the Silmarillion. (it's a tough one indeed, very easy to overlook)

Guinevere 01-01-2004 11:06 AM

Heureka! at last I found it (at least I think this must be it, it's just in the narrative.)
It is in the Akallabêth, when Sauron has corrupted most of the Númenóreans, so that they worshipped Melkor. They arrested and sacrificed many of the "Faithful" on the pretext that they were plotting against the king.
"These charges were for the most part false ; yet those were bitter days, and hate brings forth hate."

Evisse the Blue 01-01-2004 03:33 PM

You got it! Congratulations, Guinevere!

Guinevere 01-01-2004 05:28 PM

Thank you, Evisse!

Guinevere 01-02-2004 05:07 AM

Sorry, wrong guess! (Hint: it's not in LotR)

Mariska Greenleaf 01-02-2004 06:03 AM

Thanks for the usefull hint!

It was Erendis to Aldarion, Unfinished Tales.

Guinevere 01-02-2004 07:54 AM

Evisse the Blue 01-16-2004 08:40 AM

thanks, Mariska (we keep bumping up threads for each other ).
I hope this qualifies as a saying:
Quote:

But the dawn is brief and the day full often belies its promise

Guinevere 01-16-2004 12:23 PM

Ah, I remember that one ... I wondered if I should put it on my list of proverbs. It is somewhere in the Silmarillion.... *searching*

Ha! found it! It's in the chapter "Of Men" in the narrative
Quote:

West, North and South the children of Men spread and wandered, and their joy was the joy of the morning before the dew is dry, when every leaf is green. But the dawn is brief and the day full often belies its promise;and now the time drew on to the great wars of the powers of the North, when Noldor and Sindar and Men strove against the hosts of Morgoth Bauglir, and went down in ruin.

Evisse the Blue 01-19-2004 02:46 AM

Correct, please proceed. (Btw, I love your new PT )

Guinevere 01-20-2004 04:21 AM

I'm very much into UT these days...

Sador thougth this while having a conversation with Turin, but didn't speak it out loud.

Guinevere 02-05-2004 08:56 AM

Yes, very good Mariska! I had thought that that was a difficult one... Well your preoccupation with UT explains your fast answer! (Sador in particular proves to be quite a source of proverbs...)
