Hey legolaslover, just a suggestion, but please don't type in all caps. It's like you're yelling, and you don't need to yell; we can hear perfectly fine. Don't worry, it's all good!

BTW: Mae govannen, and welcome to the Downs!

Angadraug 05-02-2003 04:04 PM

You know your obsessed when you watch LOTR with your friends and every time the Council of Elrond comes up you pause it and reenact the entire scene.

Lily Bombadil 05-04-2003 05:16 PM

Last night I awoke having Barrow Downs Withdrawls! I think I got a fever...

Here's something:
Your family asks what movie y'all should see over the weekend. As soon as you open your mouth, they all shout, "NO!"

That's happened to me so many times... Once I didn't talk to them for a week afterward, until they apoligized.

Thats true unless The Sauce Pan Man came around. That guy is deaf as a door. (no offense)

There are spies(Or is it rangers?) everywhere!

~ You buy a dress at the store because "It looks elvish" (Guilty)
~ You have read every post on this thread (guilty)
~ You go hiking in the woods with two or three 7 odd year olds and pretend you're and elvish guide leading hobbits somewhere (that too)

Annalaliath 05-06-2003 06:57 PM

you buy the FOTR game, then later when you see TTT game you buy that to( even though you don't have the money) You plan to buy the RTOK game later.

you stay up all night just to beet the game.

you serch the used book store.

you love the painting your aunt did, you just know it's Gandalf.

you argue constantly to uphold the good name of JRR Tolkien, and the LOTR.

Annalaliath 05-07-2003 12:50 PM

You name your latest floppy My Precious and when you loose it you scare your friend Brook by making a Gollum impression. Wait! It is not only Brook its the whole of the library...

You put an entire paragraph, I mean page, about Tolkien and the LOTR into your self evaluation paper for the English Bord to read. You Instructor, however, makes you take it out. You think to your self, " Tolkien, and Humor Nazi!"

A woman in your photo class turns down your LOTR music you call her a Music Nazi from then on.

The head of the Art department tells you about the use of iron and the disassociation of elves and other sorts of the Farie, you wonder if he means Hobbits too. Then he won't play Chinese checkers and you call him a game nazi.

Your final project for CS 150 is a brochure. yours is all about LOTR.

All you names in Access are things like Denther is a Pyro and 333 Bagshot row.

Ainaserkewen's guide to end over edge mental and emotional addictions.

Obsessions can be fun, but sometimes they go overboard and are affecting your life negatively, if you have 1 or more of these signs, you might be...negatively addicted!

-Can't go a day without reading or watching LOTR.
-Have LOTR related dreams more than 5 times a week.
-Your losing friends because they are tired of talking Tolkien.
-Grades are dropping because of LOTR related things(ie. spending class time on this site or reading, watching LOTR.)
-Have stopped going out at night, so you can do something LOTR related.
And last of all...
-Not enjoying you obsession anymore.

If you think any of these apply to you, you might want to consider the following.

To get over anything, you must NOT stop cold turkey. If you repress your addiction, it will come back 10 times more powerful.
The first thing you need to do is arrange a party or sleepover with your closest friends. Friends that would do anything to help. Warn them that your going to do nothing but LOTR stuff. It might help if you get your LOTR buds to help.
Next, get everything that reminds you of LOTR and bring it to your gathering. This could mean, the movies, books, cards, dolls, food(lembas) script and a computer with internet.
At the party, all you are allowed to do is obsess. Talk about nothing but LOTR and reinact the scenes with your friends. Watch the movies along with the books and analyse every point. Go crazy. Do this all night or until you fall asleep. In the morning, you won't feel so drawn to it anymore.
You can do this little menouver as many times as nessesary, and each time, LOTR will not seem so great. You've obsessed and now it's over.
Good luck and don't worry.

Tinuviel of Denton 05-07-2003 08:33 PM

Except I can't do that. My best friend would kill me if I tried to talk only about LotR at one of our slumber parties.
It's gotten to the point that if I even mention LotR, she, who for the purpose of posting on BD, I will call Zel Ladrona (loooong story), won't let me open my mouth. She even covers it!
It would be funny if it wasn't so annoying.
BTW, Guilty to most of the above.

Ainaserkewen 05-08-2003 10:01 AM

That's why you schedual it.
That way you say, help me get over this. That's how you find out who your really tolerable friends are.

Helkahothion 05-08-2003 01:15 PM

That is when you ruin youre love for Lotr. And won't like it any longer. And that is a crying shame. You could do something like going out on saturdays. And change it every weekend. So one weekend you go out on Friday and the other weekend you go on Saturday. That way you always spend time with your friends. When you kill an obsession you will kill the love for the thing completly. It is not as if you are dealing with Drugs.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 05-08-2003 01:30 PM

You know you're obsessed when:

~You skip down a bustling Edmonton street singing the Drinking Song
~You want to be placed in a boat and sent over a waterfall when you die

Helkahothion 05-08-2003 01:51 PM

You know you are obsessed when:

~You cross a shallow river and scream: If you want him, come and clame him.

~Throw pebbles in the water and run away screaming that their a giant squid in the water.

~Look awkwardly and claim you have to save Middle-Earth.

Rilwen Gamgee 05-08-2003 04:55 PM

~ When you think that ESL means "Elvish as a Second Language".

~ Your official nickname at home is Sam (or some other LotR name).

~ When you find a ring in a cereal box and try to destroy it in your toilet thinking that the ring is "the One" and your toilet is "Mt. Doom".

Tinuviel of Denton 05-09-2003 10:10 AM

We watch FotR in my English class theother day and throughout the movie I was mouthing the words as the characters said them. When Frodo's hiding from the cave troll, my sisters and I count down "3, 2, 1, now!" and there's the cave troll.

Helkahothion, how did you manage to get inside Legolas' lungs?

He's got a thread in the Barrow-Downs forum that explains that...

Horse-maiden, either you're spying on me, or you are telepathic or something.

Unbelievable you are. Only thing is, I also want to look (in a feminine way, you morons!) like Aragorn when he died. I mean, the beauty of his youth and the wisdom of his age. Only it'd be the beauty of my youth and...yeah.

Tinuviel, I understand how you feel, and I think that when it's gone to this stage it is starting to be negative. You have four choices - one, to stay as you are, with your friend impatient and irritated when you mention LOTR. Two, you could kill your obsession completely. Three, you could do what Helka suggested. Four, you can do what I did, which is tide it over. However, it might not work for you. I have had an obsession with LOTR for about two years running now, since I started reading the books. It got to the stage where everybody hated me talking about LOTR, and careful to avoid anything that might lead on to it. However, slowly but surely, I've gotten back to 'simmering' - still loving LOTR and perhaps a little bit more over the top than Kem (nickname of Elvish name of friend) would prefer, but at least it's under control and no longer ruining my life, except when I visit BD too often and get behind on my school-work. Which is amended by my abstinence from BD for a while.

That's all I have to say.

I crawled up his nose when he was dreaming. Very fun trip I might say. You won't believe what people stuck up their nose. I got stuck but he started picking his nose and pushed me over the edge. The rest was easy.

I've been banned from BD until my maths is finished (innocent look at everyone ). I woke up at 5:00am yesterday morning and I haven't gone to bed yet. Around the time my parents went to bed I got on. 'Tis now 12:13am on Mother's Day.

Oh, clap clap clap. I'm still trying to catch up those 40 days of posting Lent took away from me.

Depends what part of N.Z. you're in as to whether it's great or not. My part's okay, at least it's not Auckland or Wellington or something, but it's not fantastic as far as LOTR goes.

I know of two BDers in Wellington and one future member in Taupo.

Not so near to me that I can visit.

You should not feel so damn sorry. I live on Holland. Now who the hell lives in Holland except me? Most of you live in the UK US or New Zealand. Pretty damn far if you ask me.

Bekah 05-10-2003 07:02 AM

Yeah, sure, heaps of people in N.Z. are also BDers.

I wouldn't mind visiting Holland one day. But don't feel too special because I'd like to go to Scotland a whole heap more. Not to mention the rest of the U.K., the U.S., Germany, Austria, Australia...

~ Elentari II

P.S. Also, I'd just like to slightly ease the mod's load by not being a pain myself.

GaladrieloftheOlden 05-10-2003 07:02 AM

No one's in MA except me and kittiewhirl, and I see her every weekend anyway, almost, since I was like 5/6. (That's five or six, not five sixths. I just thought somebody might try to go off topic with that, so I'm typing it here ) Holland must be better.
