Hi Skippy, raukomarth, Túrin Turambar, Tate Aisling (your father has a point, you SHOULD read the books!), Anborn (Maybe you can convince Tate Aisling to read the books!), and Goldberry! Welcome to the downs! Post well.

Tenduriel 02-09-2003 02:13 PM

here's another newbie. actually I just passed by to say hi to every-one. short description?

I like Tolkien (but who doesn't :d), i love his books AND his languages and I'd really like to learn them speak fluently.

hope you can help.

Reyna Evergreen 02-09-2003 02:17 PM

*waves* Welcome Tenduriel!

I might have spoons thrown at me for this, but I always loved being a newbie at the BarrowDowns, first of all 'cuz everyone here doesn't care all that much, they just want to teach you to get around, aaaand it's exciting!

So welcome!

Elois Telcontar 02-10-2003 11:33 AM

Thanks to everyone who welcomed me, I do feel welcomed here.

Saucepan Man, I'd love to have my father join but he has a real computer phobia,(he doesn't even know how to turn one on and since he is retired he doesn't really have to for work or school like most of us, flatly refuses.) still he loves LOTR, so there is hope I can one day lure him on.

MerenwenElf 02-10-2003 07:41 PM

I am new here! This is really cool!

Eressië Ailin 02-10-2003 07:50 PM

Hi everyone!!!!! I'm new person too!!!

Just some stuff about me:

I love the books!!

I am a HUGE Viggo fan!!!

I get sort of claustrophobic when I am around tons of Orli fangirls (which is like all the time)!!

I am just starting to learn Quenya!!

Iarhen 02-10-2003 08:03 PM

Hey!!!

Im new too...

As all of you, Ive read the 3 books of the LOTR 4 times each!

Ive read the Silmarillion also, but I have not read the Hobbit (those halflings make me wanna puke!!! J/K) and Im starting to read the UT.

I loved the movies. I think that Peter Jackson's version is great, and with a really different feel. Somewhat lighter, but more understandable and with some corrections to the story that a die-hard and long time fan would do.

Im particularly interested in Morgoth, in the Balrogs, in Gandalf (I LOVE HIM!!!) but MOSTLY Im an elf-lover. My infatuation began when I first saw Cate Blanchett as Galadriel... I had not read the books by the time I first saw FOTR... And I became enamoured with Galadriel and everyting elf-related...

In fact I hated the use of elves in the battle of Helm Deep not because it altered the story... but for the reason that elves were killed... Too depressing and saddening for me.

Anyway. Hello to all!!!!

Lady Iverin 02-11-2003 01:49 PM

Hey everybody!
I'm new here and I love the Barrowdowns. I am totally obsessed with LOTR!!!

Gorwingel 02-11-2003 06:22 PM

I loved being a Newbee here, everyone was so nice, I remember long ago when I posted my first response, I was so nervious, but everyone is so nice here, it has turned out great.
Oh and WELCOME to everyone

small 02-12-2003 07:56 AM

Hello!! Im very new here, found it yesterday!! Looks good tho!
Also, i have a question, what are the Grey Havens?? pls tell me sum1!

Bekah 02-12-2003 01:40 PM

Read the books. You'll find the answer to your question and you'll appreciate the story much more than if you've just seen the movie.

Amanaduial the archer 02-12-2003 01:40 PM

The Grey Havens are where (I think) the Valar live.

Welcome all and small!

Arwen Imladris 02-12-2003 05:13 PM

Hi small! Welcome to the downs. Post Well.

Bekah, are you trying to tell us something?

Also try to read the Silmarillion, it will help you understand the Grey Havens and Valinor better.

Bekah 02-12-2003 06:00 PM

Sorry, I just have strong views.

I reckon you should read the books before the movie, but don't worry, I have nothing against people who have seen the movie but not read the books. My best friend hasn't finished TTT, and she's seen both movies.

Lillyflower 02-12-2003 06:58 PM

Hello. I am new here. (this seems to be the standard opening)My favorite character is either Aragorn or Legolas because they're cool. I am not a hopeless "I love Legolas" case. What are the message icons for? Anybody know? And what is a "wandering ghost"? (I guess I am one) Thanks!

Anborn 02-12-2003 07:00 PM

I'm in total agreement with Bekah on that point. The written work of Tolkien connects with many of us on so many levels; from the gutrock of one's soul so to speak, that it is very hard for the film version to touch and make contact that profoundly in just a matter of hours-

Lillyflower 02-12-2003 07:12 PM

I don't know what to do...i guess i'll go talk to somebody.

Feanor of the Peredhil 02-13-2003 10:03 AM

I'm not precisely new here, having been on as Keeper of Dol Goldur (my brother's name), but I am technically a newbie, as I've only posted a couple of times and I just created my own display name yesterday. I've read The Hobbit and the trilogy numerous times, I own the extended edition DVD of the Fellowship (has anyone else seen the MTV spoof hidden in the select a scene part?), and I've seen TTT over a dozen times. Sadly, I haven't read any of Tolkien's other works, but I'd like to think of myself as a mediocre expert when it comes to most of the Trilogy. Please nobody comment that Feanor was fully elven, since I've heard it all from Keeper of Dol Goldur in the comfort of my own home, but all may feel free to PM me. I'm exceptionally glad to have found such a great website on which to have intelligent discussions with intelligent people. Just as a warning to you all- I tend to hold to my convictions unless an unarguable point is made against them, so please, all, debate openly against me. I love the thrill of learning new things and being forced to think.

Bekah 02-13-2003 01:13 PM

Ooh...somebody else!!! Yay!!! Oh goody!!!

Anyone who doesn't like that can put in down to my insanity.

Somebody else has strong convictions, and likes debating!! Yay!!!

Sorry. But I do love arguing - and I don't mean quarrelling.

Got to go. School.

Naldoriathil 02-13-2003 01:35 PM

Hello, I'm definately not new here, I am just answering Small's question: The Grey Havens are the Havens at the Mouth of the Luhn. Mithlond, the harbours of Círdan at the eastern end of the Gulf of Lhûn, from which the Elves of the north of Middle-earth passed into the West during the later Ages. Hope that helps, all though you still really need to read the books....

Yes, you're right - and among other points, if you watch the movies before reading the books, you won't be able to create your own images for it. The ones you see in the movie will be stuck there.

Bekah 02-13-2003 01:53 PM

You look fairly new to me, Naldoriathil. One can feel like an oldie pretty quickly on this site though.

~ Elentari II, who should not be on here.

Mithadan 02-13-2003 02:43 PM

Welcome, Feanor and give Keeper my regards.

Arwen Imladris 02-13-2003 03:12 PM

Hi Lilly Faelneerg (have a look around, find some threads that intrested you, read them, and if you have something to add, post), Anborn, Feanor of the Peredhil, and Naldoriathil. Welcome to the downs! (even if you don't consider yourself new) Post well.

Fergo Baggins 02-13-2003 03:14 PM

I'm new too! *bows*

Fergo Baggins, at your service.

(Last place I worked, they called me "Ferg," short for Ferguson, and my boss, making fun of my LotR-love, called me "Fergo," which I accepted with pride.)

Bekah 02-13-2003 03:37 PM

I know. Like I said, you can feel like you've been there for ages pretty quickly. But I still consider anyone newer than me really new.

balrogman 02-13-2003 05:14 PM

Hey i guess im ne but i feel old, i've read two towers, the hobbit, and return of the king, and am reading fellowship right now(i saw the movie and thought i didnt need to read the book...what an idiot i am ) I am soonly moving on to the Silmarillion, which will be the biggest book i will have ever read! My favorite character has to be Aragorn, but only after he has come back to Minas Tirith.

Dain 02-13-2003 05:34 PM

Hi all, I've been watching this site grow over the last few years (lately, the most I've been doing is playing hanghobbit...) and I only now realized it had a forum. I'm not sure who will remember, but I even wrote a few encyclopedia articles. I'd offer to do a few more anytime! Cheers!

Bekah 02-13-2003 06:09 PM

And hi, all new people. At least all those newer than me.
