Ea'ra'ne Lissesu'l 09-14-2003 07:40 PM

Hello, i'm new, and just wanted to introduse myself.

Tinuviel of Denton 09-14-2003 07:59 PM

Hey to those of you who are new!

For those of you who don't know, we try to use proper grammar and avoid chatspeak on the forums. (The chat room is of course another story.) It makes it a great deal easier to follow your train of thought that way.

Welcome to the Downs, and enjoy being d.ead!

Light of Eärendil 09-14-2003 10:49 PM

Hello!
I'm new here. But not new to Tolkien books. I'm from México, but right now I'm living in USA.
I hope we can have a great time talking about the greatest fantasy books ever written.

Namarië...

Annalaliath 09-15-2003 08:55 AM

Alrighty then. Here on the Barrow Downs, ther are a few people who can't understand chat speak. For many of them English is a second language. Others, like myself just palin don't get alot of it. We here try our best not to use it out of respect for other and the fact that it is realy anoying when someone is tallking about their seeds and who are peeps and what is BTW and all that other stuff. This respect thing ties in with not flaiming anyone or verbaly bashing someone. Have fun but not at someone elses expence.

If you want to join an RP you need to read here. After this you need to go and post here.

Have a great time.

Hi! I'm new here, and just wanted to say a few words about myself. My favorite Tolkien book is LOTR: FOTR, and I wonder when they're going to put Faramir in the movie. Namarie,

Hi. I'm Emerwyn. I'm new here and thought I'd take the time to say "Hello" to everyone. I've visited the Barrow-Downs before to find info and decided to join. I'm not extremely knowledgeable about Tolkien yet, but I'd love to talk about it.

ring_bearer000 09-16-2003 08:37 AM

hi- for some reason i cant get on the chat room so here i am. im a conservitive and i dont like rap or the clintons or gore.i watch bill orielly and hes smart (unlike some other news reporters) people always hammer me for my beliefs so please lay off.

Arwen Eruantale 09-16-2003 11:39 AM

Welcome to the Downs, Emerwyn! I like your name. What does it mean?

Mae Govannen, ring_bearer000! (I don't like rap either. lol.) Although I can't guarantee that you won't get some argument here, depending of course upon how forcefully you choose to portray your opinion, you can't go wrong with reading the FAQ's that are linked above.
In any case, I hope you both enjoy a nice long stay.

Don't worry, most of us don't know as much the real Tolkienists of the forum. I can guarantee you'll learn lots though, and that you'll have a great time! Oh and to be afraid to leave "Newbies". I was, but it turned out the rest of the forum wasn't all that terrifying (trying to work up the nerve to try and answer a quiz question with people like Beren around is a bit difficult, but anyway...)

Annalaliath 09-16-2003 05:08 PM

Its okay we all mess up. Just to let you know I didn't want to embarras you in ay way, I just wanted to let you know. Hey if we didn't make mistakes life would be easyer but there would be no challenge. So keep up and welcome.

Welcome clarinet_15! How wonderful to see another Rebekah on the board, and one with the same spelling as mine! Hurrah!
All other newbies, welcome.
Enjoy yourselves, but make sure you read the forum FAQs before posting, and please use the search function before posting topics as we've had a rash of repeat threads recently. Also, one other word- Respect. Use it to earn it. Have fun!
Peace

Emerwyn 09-17-2003 08:27 AM

Arwen Eruantale, I'm not really sure what the name means. I found it while creating a character for D&D, and I've used it ever since.

Arwen Eruantale 09-17-2003 12:12 PM

Mae Govannen, all newly deads! I hope to have some good discussions with you all.

Emerwyn, what does D&D mean? It's a nice name anyway, rolls right off the tongue.

Emerwyn 09-17-2003 03:01 PM

D&D- Dungeons and Dragons.

Hello, I found this site and would like to ask a question.
Can someone explain to me what exactly "Middle Earth" is? Thanks

SHHH! youre going to give everyone here heart failure!

Um Middle Earth is the earth where Lord of the Rings takes place, to put it simply.

Yoda 09-18-2003 08:32 AM

Hello this is my first visit to this site and I was so impressed I joined and here I am.

Tinuviel of Denton 09-18-2003 02:41 PM

Welcome to the newbies! Enjoy your stay and have fun being d.ead.

SabinaC, I'm impressed that you got up the nerve to ask that question on this site. I just may die of shock, though. Wait, I'm already d.ead.

Yoda, welcome! I hope that you stay impressed and don't get scared away by those of us who aren't entirely there.

And welcome to anyone I missed. Post wisely! (unlike me, in other words.)

SabinaC 09-18-2003 04:25 PM

Hello I did not realize my question would raise such an uproar. I just wanted to know if Middle Earth was its own entity or part of another place!
We all love TLOR in my house and we have discussions about it. Some one raise the question so I thought I would find out what I could.
I did not want to insult any one. This is for the novices and newcomers right???

Annalaliath 09-18-2003 05:14 PM

Tinuviel of Denton didn't mean to sound derogitory I am sure. But it is kind of funny when people do do that. I think that she was just being silly. Anyway Sabina welcome. You should read the rest of this thread, there is some good advise here.

Welcome all you newly deads. Have fun romping in the grave yard.

Tinuviel of Denton 09-18-2003 09:52 PM

I'm sorry if I sounded mean. It was meant to be silly as Annalalaith said. I hope I didn't hurt your feelings.

Everdawn 09-19-2003 05:52 AM

Same! I am sorry if you thought i was being a biatch! I was only joking with the heart failure thing! Seriously dont take anything i say to heart, because this is typed, it is easy to take it out of context eh?

Anyway, its a perfectly good question, i suppose we have all needed to know what Middle Earth is, up till four years ago i had no idea! So yeah, anyway "enjoy being dead" that seems to be the token phrase here.

And hi to all the other newbies! Feel free to PM those of us who have been here for a while if you need help with anything ok!

piosenniel 09-19-2003 04:12 PM

SabinaC

Here is a little explanation of what Middle-earth is:

The lands of Arda (the Earth as named by Tolkien for his stories) that lie east of Belegaer (the great sea on the west coast of Middle-earth) and extend as far south as Harad and east as Rhun. It is the area in which the stories of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings take place, and also a great deal of the Silmarillion.

Click on the gold link to read more about it:

Middle-earth

Welcome to the Barrow-Downs!

Welcome all the Newly Dead! Enjoy it!

SabinaC, that was a very interesting question...

And I shall reiterate Tinuviel of Denton:
[b]To all of you:
Don't be afraid of those of us who are not entirely of one world. Some of us have been here quite a long time, and have consequently become quite a bit more -erm.. 'die hard' -if you will- in our mutual obsessions. *smiles warmly*

Welcome to the Downs!

The lands of Flugflug that lie east of Sajhbooga and extend to Fiddledeedee? Okay, sorry... that just sounded like gibberish to me.

So, Middle-Earth is supposed to be this planet, only thousands of years ago? Any particular place on this earth? I keep trying to make the maps fit with England.

Anyway, hello all. I know Pookabunny from another message board, but that's it. ::waves::

Oh-- are there any pet peeves on this board? It seems every board has one.

Tinuviel of Denton 09-19-2003 10:17 PM

Pet peeves? Maybe chatspeak. (which you don't seem to have a problem with.)

And I think I already apologized for sounding mean. But anyway...

Welcome to the Downs all of you! Just let me reiterate that you can PM me or any of the other not-newbies if you have any questions.

(And, not that I think you're dumb but some people don't know how to PM or to access their PMs, so I'll tell you how.

To PM someone: Above each post, there are three or four links. One of them is a picture of two people with a dotted line connecting them. Click on that and then treat it like a post.

To check your PMs: Up in the top there is a line of six links; my profile, register, search, faq, donate, and forum home. "My profile" takes you to a page that shows your PMs.)

I hope I didn't insult anyone's intelligence there. Just some newbies have difficulty with the PM system, and I thought it might be better to clarify.

And Welcome once again to the wonderful realm of the Downs! Enjoy!

SabinaC 09-19-2003 11:36 PM

Poisenniel
Much thanks for your response.
