We do crackers every Christmas, but half the jokes are always in Spanish. :p I'm certain they'd be quite funny if we could read them.

Welcome to legolas1 and Buu. I'd say that I hope your respective stays at the Downs prove to be lively and enjoyable, but since we're all dead here, "lively" hardly seems the right word.

Legolas1 08-11-2008 08:53 AM

Dead?

We are all dead here?
I feel pretty much alive!

Don't worry about it. Your sig is your own. Welcome to the downs, friend.

wayseer 08-12-2008 05:30 AM

Hi. I'm new.

Wayseer.

My sig does not appear to be working?

alatar 08-12-2008 10:50 AM

wayseer, Welcome to the Downs!

In regards to you signature, you may want to confirm that the "Show signature" checkbox is selected in the Edit Options > Thread Display Options section. You can get there via clicking on the User CP link at the upper left of your page, and then finding the Edit Options link on the left.

Let me know if you need further assistance..

And happy posting!

wayseer 08-12-2008 04:45 PM

Thank you for your words of welcome Alatar.

Been to the CP>options and both sig and avatar are ticked. Avatar is obviously working but not sig.

Ha Ah Now it's working - maybe it only kicks in after a couple of posts. Very wise of the Mods.

Yes they are, as well as being just and long-suffering.

Ashbranch 09-07-2008 04:39 PM

Hello from the Shire!

Greetings everyone! Here's what I wrote earlier in another thread, but was directed to add it here instead: I was brought up, and still live about half a mile from Tolkien's childhood stomping ground of Sarehole Mill and Moseley Bog, and because of this I feel an intimate, personal connection with his works, which exist in the very landscape around here - not to mention local tales and stories about Tolkien himself. Because of this connection I have been inspired, over many years, to make an extensive study of the connections between the Legendarium and real history and mythology, and some of the fruits of this research are presented on my website Three Rings for the Elven Kings, linked below. There are many issues raised here, not least that of canon, and I look forward to debating all of them.

Estelyn Telcontar 09-08-2008 06:02 AM

Welcome, Ashbranch! Thanks for reposting your introduction here; I've closed (and will soon delete) your individual thread - a routine procedure on the Downs to keep the forum from getting overly full and cluttered.

We look forward to your contributions; I'm not the only member who has visited Sarehole Mill and enjoyed seeing the place where Tolkien spent formative years of his childhood. Did you attend "Tolkien 2005" in Birmingham?

I didn't go the event at Aston Uni, though I go to the Tolkien Weekend at Sarehole Mill every year.

Diane C 09-25-2008 06:09 AM

Hello, I too am a newbie to the world of the dead, and not a very bright one either, as I would have picked a far more relevent handle than my own bloody real name of "Diane C" DOH, not a great start!

Anyway, I'm fan of Tolkien, or more specifically LOTR. Have been a fan for about 10 years and always make a point of re-reading his fabulous tome at least once every 18 months or so.

Yep, I'm a girly and model myself very much on Eowyn (not so much Arwen though. Far too wishy-washy for my tastes). Live in Birmingham, England but born in Bloemfontein, South Africa all those eons ago.

Let the journey begin......

Thinlómien 09-25-2008 08:45 AM

Welcome, Diane C. Hope you enjoy your stay. :) And belated welcomes to Ashbranch, who already seems to have made himself home here. :)

Arwen? Wishy-washy? Which book did you read?

Perhaps I was being a tad unfair on old Arwyn. I was too influenced in my decision by the film - never liked Liv in the role to be honest, far too wishy-washy :p

Groin Redbeard 09-25-2008 11:42 AM

Welcome to the Downs

Welcome Diane C! :) I hope that your stay here in the land of the dead will be enjoyable. By the way, that's a lovely avvie that you got.

Ah, yes...the film. ;)

Welcome to the Downs.

Legate of Amon Lanc 09-26-2008 04:33 AM

Let me also join the welcome greetings, Diane C! Hope you will find this place welcoming and enjoy your stay around here. And, to note, I was intrigued by the fact that you were born in Bloemfontein - for a Tolkien fan, that's quite... well, a good background. :)

Eryn_Lasgalen 09-27-2008 04:32 PM

Hello everyone; I'm Eryn, newly entering the world of the 'Downs... to be honest, I've never been part of a forum before, so be easy on me please! ;)

About four years ago I watched the Lord of the Rings for the first time and of course loved it, but as I was rather young (I'm only a freshman now!) it was only a passing interest. Then two months ago I saw it again and couldn't believe I'd dismissed it as simply a 'good movie'! I devoured all the ME (Middle-Earth) books I could find and scoured the internet for more information. Now my favorite pastimes are writing and reading fanfiction, learning more about ME and learning elvish (just Sindarin for now, I'll take a stab at Quenya and Tengwar once I'm a little more experienced)!

Wow, I didn't mean for this to be so long. I hope no one minds; I tend to go on and on about things! :D

~Eryn

Thinlómien 09-27-2008 04:35 PM

Ooh, awesome, one more of us numerous flood-posting barrow-downers, eh? :D Welcome, Eryn, I hope you'll enjoy your death, so to speak. :)

Legate of Amon Lanc 09-27-2008 05:32 PM

Indeed, that reminds me of my beginnings and first posts which, I believe, scared several people (judging from the references). So don't worry, Eryn, many people here write long posts and that's actually good! Otherwise, the Downs won't be as great forum as it is :) Like, look, I am already here starting to write a few sentences about nothing. Okay, so: welcome to the Downs, and enjoy your stay! I hope you will find this place valuable for you.

P.S. Nice nickname, by the way.

TheGreatElvenWarrior 09-27-2008 11:16 PM

Welcome, Eryn! It's okay if you make strange posts, at least you haven't had any deleted yet...:o

Faramir Jones 10-02-2008 02:09 AM

Hello!

I just joined yesterday, and would like to say hello to everyone! :)

I met and talked with Estelyn at the recent Oxonmoot, and may have heard about this forum there; but I certainly came across it when searching online for any mentions of the moot. I liked it so much that I decided to join. :D

Thinlómien 10-02-2008 03:58 AM

Welcome, Faramir Jones. :) Enjoy being dead, like we say here. ;)

Gwathagor 10-02-2008 08:18 AM

Welcome to Eryn and Faramir Jones. Drink the kool-aid.

Groin Redbeard 10-02-2008 01:22 PM

Welcome to the Downs Mr. Jones (or should I say doctor;)). I hope your stay here will be long and fun. :)

Faramir Jones 10-03-2008 01:51 AM

Thanks!

Thanks for all the welcomes! :D And welcome too, Eryn! :)

Rune Son of Bjarne 10-04-2008 05:58 AM

Welcome Mr. Jones, I promise you that you will find this place much more comfortable than the Christ Church College, he you will get your own Barrow cold, clammy, dark and ghastly.

There is a bit of everything here, talks about the books and films, rpg'ing and of course the amazing quiz-room!

We also have a mirth section, but I dare not speak of it! (The dark creature they call Hookbill dwells there)

Faramir Jones 10-04-2008 10:44 AM

Thanks, Rune!

Thanks for your greetings, Rune!

The room I got in Christ Church College for the Oxonmoot was very nice. :D I've already had a good look around here, and have posted things up in the mirth section, if people want to take a look. :)

Rune Son of Bjarne 10-04-2008 10:51 AM

I have allready seen some of your mirth-posts, I enjoyed the Gollum-Grease video.

Mithennor 10-10-2008 09:49 PM

Salutations, I'm new here, though not new to forum life. I'm a 21 year old college senior with an art major, double concentration in studio art and art history (medieval art, with a concentration in monsters in art). I also Belly Dance and do a lot of art, and I tend to be pretty sarcastic, and I'm almost impossible to offend.

Anyways, I look forward meeting you all

Inziladun 10-10-2008 09:59 PM

Let me be the first to welcome you, Mithennor.

Sarcasm you may well find here on occasion, but it's all in good fun. Enjoy yourself!

Rune Son of Bjarne 10-10-2008 10:02 PM

Welcome Mithennor (I wonder how we will shorten your name as we already have two called Mith around)

I hope you will enjoy the Barrow-Downs, it is a cold and dreadful place just like we dead like it!

I hope you will find intertainment in Mirth and Quizes and good discutions is Books and Movies.
