Macalaure 11-17-2006 01:06 PM

I think I have it.

"Andreth, adaneth, the life and love of the Eldar dwells much in memory; and we would rather have a memory that is fair but unfinished than one that goes on to a grievous end."

I love the alliteration in that quote. :)

Guinevere 11-17-2006 01:15 PM

Correct!

:) Heh, I hadn't even consciously noticed the alliteration!
And it's so typical for Elves...

Macalaure 11-17-2006 01:54 PM

And so typical for Tolkien.

Let's take this one:

---/ -----/ --/ ---/ -------/ ---/ ----,

I only lack 3 words. I'm sure I've never read this, and anyway, I had to give back my HoMe books (which I only had borrowed) so I can't look it up, even if I knew where... :(

Our ships go now without the wind,
and many are made of --t-- that s---r-t- hidden ro--s (rooms?)
and they sink not in gale or storm;
but they are no longer fair to look upon.

sounds somehow like Numenoreans...

I just have to keep guessing to find out the material the ships are made of...

How about A ?

It's one of my favourite quotes from the Lost Road.

(it can't be rooms because of the double-o, and one of the other words you guessed is wrong.)

Guinevere 11-21-2006 03:41 AM

No wonder I made a mistake, I was just guessing... :D

Which one's the last word you can't get?

Guinevere 11-21-2006 12:13 PM

Our/ ships/ go/ now/ without/ the/ wind,
and/ many/ are/ made/ of/ metal/ that/ sheareth/ hidden/ rocks,
and/ they/ sink/ not/ in/ gale/ or/ storm;
but/ they/ are/ no/ longer/ fair/ to/ look/ upon.

"sheareth" was the word I couldn't find, and "rocks" only very late (I first assumed it was about hidden hollows in the ship's material so it wouldn't sink :D )
But I still don't know which word I guessed wrongly, probably "gale", for that is just an assumption... ?

W for "wave" perhaps?

Macalaure 11-21-2006 01:10 PM

I'm sorry, nope :p

Guinevere 11-21-2006 02:17 PM

*racking my brain*

Well, then perhaps the opposite of storm : calm ??

Macalaure 11-21-2006 04:24 PM

You got it! :)

Guinevere 11-22-2006 02:20 AM

Phew, that was hard work! *mops brow* :D
And I had to ask for more than half the alphabet, even though I could guess a large part of the quote much earlier.

btw, who makes that statement about the ships? I agree that old wooden sailboats are much more "fair to look upon" than motorboats! (small wonder, my hobby is sailing!)

Well, as I said, I don't have any more HoMe volumes now, but I wrote down some quotes, so this thread can still continue for a while... ;)
Quote:

--/ ----/ -------/ (-) ---/ ---/ ---/
-----/ ----/ ----/ ---/ ---/. ---/ ---/
-----/ -----/ ----/ ---/ ------/ ----/,
---/ ---/ ---/ --/ ------/;
---/ ----/ -----/ -----/ --/ ----/
--/ ----/ -----/ -----/ ---/ -----------/.

Macalaure 11-22-2006 07:15 AM

It's Elendil to Herendil.

Did you notice it uses the same kind of alliteration. Once you're aware of it, it's everywhere. :)

Now, let us try an 'A'.

Guinevere 11-22-2006 10:14 AM

Ah, I was right about the Númenorean origin, then. :)

"--/ ----/ -------/ (-) ---/ ---/ -a-/
--a--/ -a--/ ----/ ---/ --a/. ---/ -a-/
--a--/ -----/ --a-/ ---/ ------/ ----/,
---/ a--/ ---/ --/ --a---/;
---/ ----/ a----/ --a--/ --/ ----/
--/ ----/ -----/ -----/ a--/ -a---------/. "

(-) is a hyphen
