Tragic, what will my nick name be?

mayhaps "Thenn" would work? I dunno. But thanks for the welcome.

TheGreatElvenWarrior 10-10-2008 10:52 PM

Welcome, Mithennor! We could call you Nor?

Gwathagor 10-11-2008 12:16 AM

Hail, Mithennor.

Medieval art history is fascinating.

Well I still feel like an imposter - since the elders of the site tend to mean Mithadan when they say Mith. So I have no right or inclination to get possessive about it ..I am sure it will be clear by context who is meant - though if you start to play werewolf me may have to set a convention . I certainly you stay around enough for it to become an issue. :D

It could get to be like the Forsyte Saga - "Nicholas, Young Nicholas and Very young Nicholas" ..I quite like that ... at my age young even in a relative context would be a cheering prefix!!!

Lalaith 10-11-2008 05:53 AM

I am in a similar position; t'other Lal I think has a precedence.
We have yet to play in the same WW game, however.

haha, that works, I'm pretty open...I mean, my own mom can't remember my real name and she's the one who gave it to me

Gwathagor 10-12-2008 11:53 PM

Or Mith the Younger.

Mithalwen 10-13-2008 06:23 AM

I think we must be related ... my mother couldn't remember my name either... :)

and Master Gwathagor, your suggestion is most un-gallant. Besides Mithadan, I think is rather older than I am.

Gwathagor 10-13-2008 06:56 AM

Oh.

:(

Every time I open my mouth...

Mithalwen 10-13-2008 10:26 AM

you just change feet?

Lol don't worry about it.... :D

hmmm... we could go with Mith the Kid, kinda along the lines of 'Billy the Kid' which would be a neat refrence...did I mention I was something of a geek? anyhoo-

Mithalwen, ever get the dead cat's name? I get that one frequently... And my poor siblings never know who she is actually trying to call, we generally try to work it out through context such as "you didn't get caught, did you?"

"who here has done something that would make her mad?"

Mithalwen 10-13-2008 12:28 PM

No but I did get asked if I remembered when the dead cat was a puppy.... funnily enough the only time she could remember my name was when I was in trouble when I'd get every last syllable of both Christian names and surname "Mithalwen Pilgrim Soul, what do you think you are doing?".

The rest of the time she'd use my elder sister's name then "err...darling" as if she were thinking "I know we gave the other one a name, what was it?".

I wouldn't have minded so much but it took them so long apparently to choose my names that you would have thought they would have remembered. Our old neighbour said she gave up asking what they were going to call me and I was registered about as late as you can be without breaking the law - and after life saving surgery... parents eh?

White_Knight 10-20-2008 12:37 PM

greetings and hello to all from myself- My name is Gervias, but I am known far and wide as the white knight. I fight evil and injustice- reknown for fighting for and defending the white tower. I have fought in the war of the ring and other conflicts stretching over years of middle earth's history.

With that- greetings and hail the white tower.

White_Knight 10-20-2008 12:39 PM

I would like to get into role playing here- though I know not how it works- I beg of thee elders of barrow-downs, aid me in my battle against evil!

Yehaw! We have another writer in our midst, they are so rare these days! :D I'm not sure if I'm right about this but I think that the custom for all new RPGers is to check into the Golden Perch Inn. What you do is you click on the link that says Shire and go to the Golden Perch Inn Disscussion Thread, then you ask the mod if you can post in the thread. Then after the Golden Perch Inn you can check out some of the other games in the Shire that you might want to join.:)

Oh, and by the way: welcome to the Downs! :)

White_Knight 10-20-2008 01:15 PM

lol thanks!!! I have read abit about the rpging now- hehe I was thinking for some reason that we had to be in or have a character right from the get go- thank you for the clarification- it is greatly appreciated!

Legate of Amon Lanc 10-20-2008 01:30 PM

Indeed, let me second Groin. There's never enough of RPG players! Welcome, White_Knight! And nobody restrains you from being in-character if you wish, it may be interesting :)

And, of course, if you feel like it, let me encourage you to visit also other parts of the Downs besides the roleplaying section - you may find something interesting even there, for sure.

Anyway, enjoy your stay!

White_Knight 10-20-2008 01:41 PM

oh ya for sure- I am currently perusing the sight- and let me say that I am rapidly becoming a big big fan. I have been looking around for a site of this magnitude for some time. I love LoTR and I hope that I may greatly contribute around here....

What did you miss? Hmm...

Do not try to get to quickly know what happened by reading The Downer, though.

Gil-Galad 10-29-2008 11:14 AM

ha, if the downer becomes a credible newspaper then that is something i missed!

dont tell hookbill i said that...

Hugo Millbanks 11-20-2008 03:46 PM

Hello

I first read the Hobbit in the mid 70's and the Lord Of The Rings around '77. I read the Silmarillion in the early 80's. I have re-read all more times than I can remember, the LoTR 3 times as many as the others. I am finishing the HoME now, near the end of Morgoths Ring.
I have been reading the forum here for some time now. I find the discussions mostly intriguing. The depth of knowledge and opinions is wonderful. I have found few around me that have as much fasination with Tolkien as I. I doubt I am not certain that I will be able to add much value to the discussions but I will certainly continue to enjoy reading them.
Hope I didnt go too overboard in introducing myself.

Surely you didn't. :) That was not a too long introduction by any standards - there are many much longer, for example my own way back in 2004. ;)

Anyway, welcome to the ranks of the dead, Hugo! :D

Nessa Emerald 11-23-2008 09:43 PM

Hi! I'm Emy and I love LOTR, apparently... :D I love theater, writing, and reading. I'm taking a Creative Writing class this year and have to write 250 words daily, but I love it! I've done theater for about five years, and have been on all parts of crew and cast.

I get confused easily but love to have fun and play pranks. I'm either at school, my theater, in my room reading or writing or on the computer...

Eol Galvorn 11-24-2008 08:06 AM

Hello,
I ended up here while searching for information on werewolves in Arda, and I was captivated by the intelligence of the discussions going on here regarding so many interesting topics. I am a writer/artist of a comic book, from which I draw a lot of inspiration from the works of Tolkien (among other things.) I love fantasy, especially dark fantasy, finding beauty in the darkness above all else. I hope to get to know you all and look forward to debating, discussing, and learning from you all.

Eol

Gollum the Great 11-24-2008 09:08 AM

Welcome you two. Have fun.

Gwathagor 11-24-2008 10:41 AM

Greetings Eol, Nessa, and Mr. Millbanks.

Groin Redbeard 11-24-2008 11:10 AM

Welcome to all the newcomers! I can assure that if you love Tolkien you won't be dissapointed in this forum.:D

Thinlómien 11-24-2008 11:29 AM

Welcome, Emy and Eol! Enjoy being dead. ;)

Selador 11-28-2008 09:51 AM

The last thing I need, the last thing I have time for, the last thing I should be doing is spending my days discussing every minute detail of the incredibly intricate world of Middle Earth.

And yet, here I am!

I blame Tolkien.

Estelyn Telcontar 11-28-2008 10:07 AM

Welcome, Selador - that has to be one of the most original and subtle Tolkien nicks I've read! If you're so familiar with his works to have chosen it, you'll be able to enjoy and contribute to many discussions here.

Welcome also to Eol, Nessa, Hugo, and those many newcomers who have joined since I last took the time to greet them. I hope you'll feel at home in our little Barrow - the swords that lie around occasionally are purely decorative, I assure you!

Welcome to all the newbies and oldies (hehe). Was wondering if anyone new of any concise English to Quenya sites?

Thanks

Heya folks, Lady OelteA (Oh-Ell-Tay-Ah) here hoping to join in all the fun. This is my first reading of the LoR books, and am feeling the constant urge to dig deeper into the story. So far I'm in Rivendell in Part One, with Frodo enjoying running into Bilbo again.

Have had the book set for over 5 years, and have been saving the reading project for a special time. It has now dawned, and I'm totally infatuated with the story. I've been surrounded by LoR fans going back to their first readings in the 70s, so have heard much about this story that has enchanted me.

Hoping to gather more insight into the story line, as well as handling the inconsistencies (one of them drawing me here in the first place; looking into the inconsistency with the creatures in the Misty Mountains: The Hobbit has gremlins, and The Fellowship of the Ring has Orcs...still haven't figure that one out).

Found the FAQ's, and am now trying to figure out how to properly write my handle OelteA with the squiggly's (can't actually find the ability to change that name; s'pose a moderator would do this?)

Still not sure how to properly arrange any squiggly's in my name, as I made up the name 7 years ago when I started learning RPGing...haven't had a source to play with since, but will get on again when I do (still much to learn).

Anyways, I look forward to all your insight in these forums and can't wait to know more :)

alatar 12-11-2008 11:17 AM

Welcome Lady OelteA to the Downs. Hope you enjoy your time here as well as reading the books. I'm currently a couple of chapters ahead, though this is about the thirtieth time through.

Some information can be found here regarding the difference between orcs and goblins.

Gwathagor 12-11-2008 02:22 PM

Indeed, welcome.

Formendacil, a friend from another forum site directed me to this site. I look forward to lots of discussions about a topic I hold dear.

I first read The Hobbit about 20 years ago, then The Lord of the Rings after. Recently I finished The Silmarilllion, and now I am tackling the Book of Lost Tales.

Richard

Thinlómien 12-12-2008 03:35 AM

A friend of Form's is a friend of mine too. ;) So, welcome, Stewie! :D And welcome to OelteA too - I look forward to seeing you both post. :)
