Oh, boy..."ranger" was the occupation I was thinking of, and I didn't know "king" was in there.....eep.

There is only one more word. It's the name of one of the members of the original Fellowship.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 06-28-2003 11:57 PM

Is the name Sam?

stranger came

Samwise 06-29-2003 09:32 PM

Nope. All of the words in this are together. There are no separated letters. Since you folks are probably tired of this one, though, here's a (bit of) hint: This Fellowship member was not human.

LePetitChoux 06-30-2003 03:09 AM

I am close to doing something I never, ever, ever do - give up!
I can't find anyone in there...
I expect it will be either Legolas or Gimli, because most of the words are to do with Rohan, but nowhere can I see them!

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 06-30-2003 12:01 PM

Samwise! We need a better hint!

That's the one, Mr. Saucepan. Oh, dear. You've all been doing such good guessing, though, I'm not sure who to give it to.

Samwise 06-30-2003 02:26 PM

Well, from my count, Gwahir the Windlord got most of them. He may continue, unless he'd like to give it to someone else.

Gwaihir the Windlord 06-30-2003 11:02 PM

Well, thanks, I think I'll take it myself (although I did have it considerably easier, what with going first)

Ok; the following passage will contain ten words. They could be from any source, but are specific terms for Tolkien's inventions only -- I think all people or places -- not simply English words that feature in the books ('ring', for example, will not be allowed, although 'Treebeard' would as it is a specific translaion that refers to a specific thing). If you find one that I didn't know about (Rohan or Roan, for example) then you can have a bonus point . If the sound of the letters you have found resembles something, then chances are it is a good guess.

The man, wearing a coat of thin material -- a purple iridescent washed with blue dye -- looked around him before striding into the field. His eyes were dull, mostly dark blue but with a slight yellow in the inner circle.

The tree that had stood there, in time far ago on the top of a mound, had had an 'ethel' branch grafted onto it that had caused it to collapse. The hulk was now covered with ringed colonies of moulds and fungi that had turned it snow-white. Trees, left dead like this, can stay solid for many years; however this one looked like collapsing quickly.

The wind blew through the man's course hair as he stooped to look at what lay on this log. The rotten bark was black, but a still blacker eel lay snugly in a crack. The man's eyes opened wider.....

Some of these may be rather tricky. I might give a small clue: the very last word in the passage is the hardest to find. Or at least it should be.

 • Manwë
 • Entwash
 • Ulmo
I can't find any more right now...

Not too sure about this one, but it was used specifically for Tolkien (i think)

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-02-2003 12:35 AM

You've got four. Manwe, Ulmo, White Tree and Entwash are all correct -- I'm afraid Tulkas isn't. (There are no split words, and all the letter sounds must be present.)

Eruanna 07-02-2003 12:25 PM

All the letter sounds must be present....not necessarily the letters?

Then do these count:

"far ago on"....Aragorn.

"Course hair".....Corsair.

"had had an ethel...Adanedhel (Elf-Man, one of Turin's names)

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-03-2003 12:32 AM

Yes, they're correct. So we've got seven:
-Manwe
-Ulmo
-Aragorn
-Adadedhel
-Entwash
-White tree
-Corsair
Three more (that I know of)

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 07-03-2003 11:21 AM

"there, in time" yeilds Erinti the archaic Valier.

Bit of a stretch but I find:

'slight yellow' becomes 'slight yeller' fairly easily, from which one can get tyeller the word for 'grades' in the Elvish Alphabet.

Sophia

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-04-2003 01:16 AM

Well, I didn't actually have Erenti. Nothing 'archaic' is deliberately there, but I'll grant it. A bonus point to Sophia.

Tyeller was one though, yes. Two more.
Manwe
Ulmo
Entwash
Adanedhel
White Tree
Coarsair
Aragorn
Tyeller
?
?

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 07-06-2003 10:25 AM

Er...a hint, perhaps?

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-08-2003 02:47 AM

Lol, right you are. I'll give a hint for the two remaining names: one is a mountain range, the other is the name of an Ainu.

The Saucepan Man 07-14-2003 06:12 PM

Well, here's one more:

Can't see the last one for the life of me, though.

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-15-2003 02:06 AM

Very good, Saucepans. With any luck the end is now in sight. The last name is a Maia, specifically.

LePetitChoux 07-18-2003 10:36 AM

This is probably terribly thick of me, but may I have yet another clue?

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-19-2003 02:14 AM

Ok. This Maiar is associated with fire -- practically giving it away, but you still have to find its hiding-place in the passage...

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 07-22-2003 11:25 AM

I'm pretty sure I know which Maiar you're talking about, but I just CAN'T FIND IT! Gwaihir, you sneaky little bird...

Beren87 07-26-2003 02:15 PM

Well, I guess you want Arien, but I as well cannot seem to find it.

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-27-2003 02:43 AM

Yeah, it's Arien. And unless I've made a horrible mistake, it's in there. Find it .

Samwise 07-27-2003 05:25 PM

wearing
ari_n?

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-29-2003 02:54 AM

=] As we're basing the words on phoneticness rather than just letters, I'm afraid I can't take that one... I may as well give you a hint. It's in the last paragraph.

Gwaihir the Windlord 08-01-2003 02:02 AM

At last, someone's got it. Well done Annunfuiniel. (As you perhaps realised, all the words were whole in my passage, and also all stretched over two or in one case three consecutive words with no interruptions). Can't tell you how glad I am that that's over .

As Annunfuiniel, Saucepans, Eruanna, Sophia, Horse-maiden, and Doom-vegetable were all the contributors, either one of you may go next.

The Saucepan Man 08-01-2003 05:35 AM

I'll pass.

Well done, Annun. But could someone explain to me how "eree" gives "Arien" phonetically. I may be being dense here, but I just don't get it.

I certainly don't get it, either.

Gwaihir the Windlord 08-02-2003 03:02 AM

Damn, you're right, it doesn't. Ok sorry about that, looks like I made a rather embarassing mistake (probably thinking of 'Ariel' or something instead of Arien...). :/ Don't worry, Saucepans, it was actually me that was being dense...

Anyway. My apologies for the mistake. Anyone who is viable may post the next one.

Annunfuiniel 08-02-2003 04:26 AM

So I got a wrong word right, eh? Go figure...

Feanor of the Peredhil 08-02-2003 11:55 AM

Hey... I'm capable of living outside the womb... and I'm rather practical... Here goes: This contains two Tolkien things:

"Did you hear? They hung Old Aunt Webby in the square!" Grandmother Ada gasped, clutching her walking stick.

Samwise 08-02-2003 06:23 PM

Uh...are they Phonetical, or are the words just there?

Feanor of the Peredhil 08-02-2003 06:32 PM

Phonetical, my dear Wise-man. It will probably help to read them aloud, and I did include clues in the sentences themselves. And oddly enough, I didn't even notice 'earth' when I created this. Luckly it has absolutely nothing to do with the answer (clue or otherwise).
