Guinevere 05-22-2003 12:01 PM

Right you are, Annunfuiniel! Your turn.

Annunfuiniel 05-22-2003 12:10 PM

Thank you, Guinevere!

Quote:

The wide world is all about you: you can fence yourselves in, but you cannot for ever fence it out.

Guinevere 05-24-2003 07:27 PM

That was Gildor Inglorion to Frodo.

Annunfuiniel 05-26-2003 08:30 PM

Indeed 'twas! Please proceed, Guinevere.

Guinevere 05-27-2003 06:46 AM

Thank you, Annunfuiniel.
Quote:

Cold is the life of a mariner's wife
Perhaps this is too easy?

Eruanna 05-27-2003 08:46 AM

That was Aldarion to his father Tar-Meneldur. When the latter urged him to take a bride.

Guinevere 05-27-2003 02:10 PM

That's it, Eruanna! Your turn!

Eruanna 06-03-2003 05:50 PM

Thank you.
Quote:

" I am your sister and not your servant..."

Guinevere 06-04-2003 01:32 AM

Wasn't that Aredhel to Turgon? (Doesn't sound like a "proverb" though... )

Eruanna 06-04-2003 12:05 PM

It was indeed.....I was going more for a brother/sister type cliché.

Guinevere 06-04-2003 03:14 PM

Thanks!
Quote:

Let him not walk in the dark who has not seen the nightfall.

Annunfuiniel 06-06-2003 01:29 PM

If you make it
Quote:

Let him not vow to walk in the dark...
then that was said by Elrond to Gimli (in chapter The Ring Goes South).

Guinevere 06-06-2003 01:59 PM

You're right, Annunfuiniel!
I must apologize for having accidentally left out "vow to" , shame on me
You're good to find it out in spite of that mistake.

Annunfuiniel 06-06-2003 02:07 PM

Hannon le! And no need to be ashamed, Guinevere, these things happen to the best of us.
Quote:

Faithful heart may have froward tongue.

Guinevere 06-06-2003 02:23 PM

That was Théoden to Gandalf , about Éomer.

(We've had that one already, on page 2 of this thread)

Annunfuiniel 06-06-2003 03:48 PM

Rats! I knew it might be so but still couldn't bring myself to check the whole thread...
Aaaanyways, your turn again, Guinevere!

Annun

At table small men may do the greater deeds

Narduewen 06-08-2003 01:30 PM

Beregond to Pippen.

Guinevere 06-08-2003 02:16 PM

Correct, Narduewen. Hey, you were fast to answer!

Guinevere 06-23-2003 03:04 PM

Hello, Narduewen, where are you? It's your turn!

Narduewen 06-23-2003 08:03 PM

Whoops. I forgot that I had posted here. As for the next quote.

Quote:

"...follk are not what they seem."

Belsirithil 06-23-2003 08:27 PM

LOL... I come back over a year later and see that I didn't even realize this was a game.

Narduewen 06-25-2003 09:23 PM

Need any hints?

Guinevere 07-02-2003 01:48 AM

I sounds like a hobbit... could it be Sam?
Just guessing, I haven't been able to find it (yet)

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-02-2003 04:03 AM

Hmmm, it wouldn't be Barliman Butterbur by any chance would it?

Narduewen 07-02-2003 08:25 PM

Neither are correct, though Guinevere is getting somewhere.

Guinevere 07-17-2003 08:18 AM

I still haven't been able to find it.... I need another hint! (please!)
Or does anyone else know that quote??

Narduewen 07-17-2003 09:56 AM

Well, as for hints, I can not be so sure that they are correct because I am at camp and without my book. I will give this hint for I am almost positive that it is correct. It is said by a hobbit and not in FotR. I hope those might help.

Hi Narduewen!

Is this the quote?

Quote:

For when you are older, you will learn that folk are not always what they seem; and though you may have taken me for a soft stranger-lad and easy prey, let me warn you: I am not, I am a halfling, hard, bold, and wicked!
That is, of course, Pippin to young Bergil son of Beregond.

Narduewen 07-23-2003 10:04 AM

That it would be, Lostgaeriel! You may proceed.

Lostgaeriel 07-23-2003 08:10 PM

Quote:

It’s the job that’s never started as takes longest to finish.
Yeah, yeah, it's a very easy quote.

But one of my favourites - I'm a world class procrastinator. (Been dead & in the Barrow for almost 2 years and this is only my 495th post!?)

Guinevere 07-24-2003 07:10 AM

Oh Lostgaeriel, you're really good to have found the last quote! I had been searching for that everywhere without success!
And I am happy that you posted one that I recognize...
Quote:

"It's the job that's never started as takes longest to finish" as my old Gaffer used to say.
says Sam to Frodo (in Lothlorien, about their quest.)

Lostgaeriel 07-24-2003 08:58 PM

Yes, Guinevere, you are correct! Please proceed.

Guinevere 07-25-2003 12:57 PM

Thank you, Lostgaeriel!
Just recently I came across another fine Middle-earth proverb:
Quote:

Malice that wakes in the morning is the mirth of Morgoth ere night.

Guinevere 08-18-2003 12:07 PM

Does no one recognize this proverb?
I'll give you a hint: it's from Unfinished Tales!

Evisse the Blue 08-18-2003 08:35 PM

That's Mablung musing about Turin's 'harrassment' of Saeros.

Guinevere 08-19-2003 01:23 PM

You've got it, Evisse! your turn.

Evisse the Blue 08-20-2003 12:20 PM

Well, guessing is the easy part. Now I have to think of a saying that doesn't give too much away - Btw, yours was great, Guinevere!
Well - here it is ( piece of cake):
Quote:

Let the ploughman plough, but choose an otter for swiming (..)

Guinevere 08-20-2003 12:47 PM

Quote:

...and for running light over grass and leaf, or over snow - an Elf
That was Legolas on the way down from Caradhras.

Evisse the Blue 08-20-2003 01:04 PM

Exactly.

I didn't give the rest of the quote in hope of making it more difficult, but apparently you weren't fooled by it. Go on!
