You know.. same stuff.

Re: Questions 2

I'm not sure what you are looking for here. Sounds like a discussion of capital punishment, perhaps. We've heard enough about people condemned to death with testimony of only one witness or a false witness. And we've seen people who did terrible things avoid the death penalty for years through appeals. A very difficult question. Most, or perhaps, all of the European nations have done away with the death penalty. Hard stuff!

The quote was his sig. But perhaps you knew that, and your post was a joke. In which case I'll look pretty silly. Oh well.

Eagles?...

This might be a good question for the Windlord: It seems like the eagles of middle-earth have some sort of "royal" history of descent (kind of like certain trees, or lines of royalty) -- is there any definitive list or eagle "family tree" that specifies this. I'm curious to find out

Re: Eagles?...

Aranarth, a son of Arvedui, did not die in the shipwreck. It was he who advised Círdan of Arvedui's escape to the Ice Bay, so maybe Arvedui gave the sceptre to him.

That is possible ... but unlikely, as a king doesnt give away his chief sign of royalty before he gives away his title... ??

Re: Eagles?...

Arvedui was on the run when he died, and likely sent the sceptre with his sons to Lindon for safekeeping. He kept the palantiri, no doubt, for communication purposes. Kind of like a Middle-earth cell phone to make a 911.

Actually, I can't answer, beyond saying that it is a gaming system that was sold, which featured role playing in Middle-earth.

Re: Questions 2

ICE stands for "Iron Crown Enterprises", the role-playing game company known for their "Rolemaster" gaming system. Years ago they had the license for Tolkien products (they don't any more) and produced many Middle-earth books and supplements of varying quality and accuracy.

I thought they had gone or were soon going out of business, but their website is still up -- http://www.ironcrown.comwww.ironcrown.com.

In your own words, describe your feelings about the fact that we are 20% genetically identical to lettuce.

Since I've known many people who are over 85% intellectually identical to lettuce, I'd say the relatively low percentage of genetic similarity is rather shocking.

Lettuce shmettuce. Fruit-flies are the key.

Quote:
"Scientists have long known that humans share many similar genes with fruit flies," says Ethan Bier, a professor of biology at UCSD who headed the research. "The surprise is how deep these similarities really are. Basically, every category of human genetic disease is well represented with a counterpart in the fly."

Quote:
Their comparison of the amino acid sequences identified 548 fruit-fly genes that are so similar to genes involved in 714 human genetic disorders that the similarity could have statistically occurred by chance only one time out of 10 billion.

Now I think I'll buzz off to the next thread.

Re: Questions 2

I am wondering. If the Balrogs had not come to Melkors aid, could Ungoliant have eaten Melkor? I think that her webs were too strong for him to break out of, so she probably would have eaten the other Silmarils and become even more powerful. If she had eaten Melkor, would his spirit be able to escape from her?

Yes. And then she would have become soo powerfull that she at last had eaten all of Arda.

No! I think the main problem is that if the Balrogs hadn't come to Melkors rescue, we wouldn't have the Silmarillion, the Akallabeth, the Hobbit or the Lord of the Rings...

Elendur 10-09-2001 11:59 PM

I have been talking with some freinds and we disagree on something. What I want to know is, do you think that if Melkor had worn the ring he would be more powerful? Sauron was a very powerful Maia, and he put alot of his own being into the Ring. So I think that if Melkor had worn the ring, even though Sauron did not compare in power with Melkor, Melkor would still gain power from it.

My freinds are arguing that power is never given from the less powerful to the more powerful, instead always the other way around. Melkor/Sauron -> Servants, Melian -> Thingol.. so on, so on.

What do you think?

Orald 10-11-2001 09:07 PM

I've got a good, one, at least I think so. Seeing that when Carcharoth swallowed a silmaril it 'seared his accursed flesh' Do you think that Ungoliant would have become stronger by swallowing it or been filled with horrible pain?

Telchar 10-12-2001 03:21 AM

That's a interesting thought. I think the Silmarils would eventually have burned her up, as I think they would have burned and eventually killed Carcharoth... But yes - she migth have been stronger for a while, who knows?

Jjudvven 10-12-2001 02:01 PM

I think she would have just become stronger, cause she was very powerful to begin with. the silmarils would probably kill any lesser being.

The Barrow-Wight 10-14-2001 08:38 AM

The Silmarils burned Carcharoth and Melkor because they were hallowed artifacts. But when Ungoliant sucked the life out of the Two Trees (two of the most hallowed items in Arda, I'd venture) she showed no ill effect at all. In fact, her body and power swelled as she drained the Trees. From this, it would seem that the Silmarils, too, would have simply engorged her even more - perhaps to the point of bursting.

Now that would have been messy.

Telchar 11-23-2001 02:46 AM

I have a simple question.

When did Bombur die? I know he was alive when Frodo got to Rivendell, but Robert Fosters, Complete guide to ME says he dies in TA 3018, can anyone confirm?

Elrian 11-24-2001 02:44 AM

Good question! The Council was in the fall of 3018, and the war in 3019. If Bombur was to fat to move he certainly couldn't have fought in the battle at Dale. And nothing is mentioned of his death in the appendixes. Could have been a typo
