These three gentlemen all have something in common, and the first two contain clues to who they are.
The third is just plain WRONG, but I could not resist!

#1. HER GADFLY AGENT
#2. MUTINEER WASH HAT
#3. RAWBONED SHAG TART

Good luck unscrambling!

I don't know if Amandil is still around, but I want to solve these.

Now the answers two years later...

1) GANDALF THE GREY
2) SARUMAN THE WHITE
3) RADAGAST THE BROWN

According to the search engine, he hasn't posted since May 2001. So you can go ahead I guess. This sounds interesting.

alaklondewen 03-26-2003 04:38 PM

Well, I hope he didn't leave because no one answered his anagrams.

ULTRA HIND (a person 1 word)

The Saucepan Man 03-26-2003 07:18 PM

That'll be Legolas' dad ...

Thranduil.

alaklondewen 03-26-2003 09:47 PM

Yes! Do you think there is a group of house-wives out there that call themselves Thrandy-bobbers?

The Saucepan Man 03-27-2003 08:30 PM

So, Thranduil is to Julio as Legolas is to Enrique?

RING OF SAD BOG
GAINS BIG BLOB

Easy ...

alaklondewen 03-27-2003 08:50 PM

FRODO BAGGINS

BILBO BAGGINS

It wasn't too easy. I had to write it out on paper.

The Saucepan Man 03-27-2003 09:30 PM

So did I to get the anagrams in the first place.

The floor is yours, alaklondewen.

alaklondewen 03-28-2003 07:35 AM

Thank you.

AID NUN

GRAVE ERR IT

One will lead to the other.

Eruanna 03-28-2003 12:48 PM

ANDUIN
GREAT RIVER.

alaklondewen 03-28-2003 04:36 PM

Correct! You're up.

Eruanna 03-29-2003 03:08 PM

Thanks

GLUG RUAN

GROAND NORTH

alaklondewen 04-02-2003 07:04 AM

Okay, I have the second one:

NARGOTHROND

I'm sure the first one is glaringly obvious, but can you humor me and tell me whether it is a place also?

[ April 02, 2003: Message edited by: alaklondewen ]

Eruanna 04-02-2003 03:12 PM

Nargothrond is correct!
The first one is not a place but is connected to the second.

Silmarien 04-02-2003 08:07 PM

Would Glaurung be the first one?

Eruanna 04-03-2003 03:57 PM

Yes, that's right.
As you were both right, Alaklondewen and Silmarien one of you should go next!

Silmarien 04-04-2003 04:46 PM

Sorry Alaklondewen, I'm going to jump in.

This is two connected people in one.

MINE OF WAR AND RAY

Eruanna 04-05-2003 04:45 PM

Is it Eowyn and Faramir?

Silmarien 04-05-2003 10:27 PM

Yes, my favourite couple.

Eruanna 04-06-2003 01:11 PM

SNOW DROWBAR

THAT GORN DRY

Two names but the ends the same.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-06-2003 03:16 PM

the first one could certainly be BARROWDOWNS, but I have no idea about the second...

Eruanna 04-06-2003 04:31 PM

Barrow Downs is correct!

The second one is just as easy, it is also comprised of two words.

Your turn.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-07-2003 12:54 PM

ROAD THIN GORM = Thangorodrim

DANG BAN = Angband

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-07-2003 03:54 PM

perfect!

Nuranar 04-07-2003 06:41 PM

I can't say don't laugh...I did when I wrote them...

UN MINI DOLL

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-08-2003 01:41 AM

BELFALAS

MINDOLLUIN

yes? *hopeful*

Nuranar 04-08-2003 03:01 PM

Excellent!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-08-2003 05:55 PM

SAM OR IM LUNG

GHOUL TIN RIC

are these supposed to make sense? It is definately beyond my powers to make them into any sort of recognizable phrase

The Saucepan Man 04-09-2003 06:38 AM

That'll be MINAS MORGUL and CIRITH UNGOL.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 04-09-2003 12:36 PM

Why so it is

The Saucepan Man 04-09-2003 06:23 PM

OK - there's a theme, and they kind of make sense ...

WAR AGE HURT A MAN

and

GRIM MOLE

... my current favourite.

Eruanna 04-11-2003 04:16 PM

I think I've got them....

WAR AGE HURT A MAN = AGARWAEN UMARTH ( Agarwaen son of Umarth, one of Turin's aliases)

GRIM MOLE = MORMEGIL (The Black Sword, another of his names)

Stands back hopefully

The Saucepan Man 04-11-2003 06:47 PM

Yes, the ol' tragic hero himself, Turin Turamabar.

So, Eruanna, the floor is yours ...

Eruanna 04-12-2003 01:54 PM

Ready for some more?

DIANNA ON DIRE EARTH

Yikes, Eruanna... seems we need more than luck . I just want to congratulate you... I can't get anywhere with these... they're hard!

Sophia

Eruanna 04-18-2003 09:53 AM

Sorry, I forgot about these....perhaps a hint is in order?

They are connected...the first one leads to the second.....you could say it was an Annus Horriblis (I hope I've got the spelling right!)
Oh, and the first is two words, the second is three.
