Name That Tune!

I just thought of this. I don't think it has been used before, but if it has I'll beg for mercy. As the title suggests, this is like the television show. (The OLD television show) A responder can ask for any number of words, and then must guess the song. Since there aren't a ton of songs, quotes are good too. I'll start with one word. And an easy song. Feel free to ask for more.

silver

Edit: silver flow

It's the Song of Lebennin.

Quote:

Silver flow the streams from Celos to Erui.
In the green fields of Lebennin!
Tall grows the grass there. In the wind from the sea
The white lilies sway,
And the golden bells are shaken of mallos and alfirin
In the green fields of lebennin,
In the wind from the sea!

Arestevana 06-05-2003 02:19 PM

Correct, Eruanna! You may continue.

Eruanna 06-06-2003 11:03 AM

Thank you.

"The wind......"

EvennStarr8 06-06-2003 12:15 PM

this is my very first post, so if i mess up just tell me, is it "Treebeard's song"?;..."Ah! the wind and the whitenessand the black branches of winter upon Orod-na-thon!"

Eruanna 06-06-2003 04:36 PM

No, that's not it.

Welcome to the Downs EvennStarr8

EvennStarr8 06-07-2003 11:08 PM

Is it "Legolas's Song of the Sea"? "The wind is blowing, and the white foam is flying....."

Eruanna 06-08-2003 06:13 AM

No one has come up with the right song yet, so I've added a couple of words:
"The wind is on the..."

It's the first line of the song.

Turambar 06-10-2003 01:55 PM

"The wind was on the withered heath", from The Hobbit?

[ June 10, 2003: Message edited by: Turambar ]

Eruanna 06-10-2003 02:02 PM

Yay....that's it.

Turambar 06-10-2003 02:20 PM

Does the hint have to be the first word(s) of the song?

Orofaniel 06-11-2003 08:03 AM

So, when is the next coming.....I'm waiting in excitment!

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 06-11-2003 10:50 AM

I don't think so, Turambar.

Turambar 06-11-2003 01:29 PM

mighty doom

Arestevana 06-11-2003 01:40 PM

They don't have to be the first words, but they should be something sensible; not 'and the' or 'it is'. I don't think anyone would have done that, but I saw I needed to clarify.

Turambar 06-12-2003 09:13 AM

I guess you need a few more "notes":

on him mighty doom was laid

Beren87 06-12-2003 02:30 PM

The Lay of Leithian? I really can't find it, hmm.

Anyway, welcome back Turambar!

[ June 12, 2003: Message edited by: Beren87 ]

Turambar 06-12-2003 02:56 PM

Not the Lay of Leithan.

HINT: this song contains a very unusual word, and the "long version" has an even more unusual word.

Now that's an unusual choice of avatar.

Elentarimir 06-12-2003 04:10 PM

Bilbo's song about Earendil in Rivendell? This is just a guess, but that line sounds strangely familiar....

Turambar 06-13-2003 08:36 AM

That's it ! Also called Errantry.

LadyEowynofRohan 04-04-2005 07:59 AM

hey im a bit new (well a lot) but if it's ok im going to jump straight in.

"The leaves were.."

arcticstorm 04-04-2005 07:14 PM

It is from Strider's Tale of Tinuviel

"The Leaves were long, the grass was green, the hemlock-umbels tall and fair,
And in the glade a light was seen of stars in shadow shimmering. Tinuviel was danceingg there to music of a pipe unseen, and light of stars was in her hair, and in her raiment glimmering.

LadyEowynofRohan 04-05-2005 04:52 AM

well done! it is indeed Aragorn's tale of Tinuviel!

arcticstorm 04-06-2005 06:43 PM

ok

"Cold be hand"

Beanamir of Gondor 04-22-2005 06:49 AM

Cold be hand and heart and bone,
and cold be sleep under stone:
never more to wake on stony bed,
never, til the Sun fails and the Moon is dead.
In the black wind the stars shall die,
and still on gold here let them lie,
till the dark lord lifts his hand
over dead sea and withered land.

Fog on the Barrow Downs :D . Heard by Frodo.
[sung by Gollum in TTT movie]

arcticstorm 04-22-2005 12:12 PM

yep, your go

Beanamir of Gondor 04-23-2005 07:40 PM

"...countless stars..."

Somebody let me know if that's too short.

NightKnight 04-24-2005 05:59 AM

"Gil-Galad was an elven king
Of him the harpers sadly sing
The last whose realm was fair and free
Between the mountains and the sea

His sword was long, his lance was keen
His shining helm afar was seen
The countless stars of heaven's field
Were mirrored in his silver shield

But long ago he rode away
And where he dwelleth none can say
For into darkness fell his star
In Mordor, where the shadows are"

Not sure what it's called, but it's the one that Sam sings on the way to Rivendell.

Beanamir of Gondor 04-25-2005 11:34 AM

You've got it, NightKnight! And that song is listed in the appendices just as Gil-galad: in my book, anyway.
All yours!

NightKnight 04-25-2005 02:12 PM

Crap of crappy crappiness... I don't have the books in English, so unfortunately I can't post a new song. Does anyone else want to have a go?

Holbytlass 04-25-2005 05:33 PM

Sorry you had to forfeit, NightKnight. If I may...

fountain white

Holbytlass 04-30-2005 05:10 PM

Okay, it's been 5 days so I'll add a little more...
fountain white beneath the sky

wilwarin538 05-02-2005 02:06 PM

Bilbo's bath song ( sung by Pippin)

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Holbytlass 05-07-2005 06:37 PM

Yea, you got it!! I was beginnig to think that I was a jinx to threads. Please proceed....

wilwarin538 06-06-2005 06:12 PM

returning feet

Have fun!

wilwarin538 06-14-2005 05:05 PM

OK Ill make it a little longer.

I listen for returning feet...

Evisse the Blue 06-15-2005 06:20 AM

'I listen for returning feet and voices at the door'.

Bilbo's song in FOTR.

wilwarin538 06-15-2005 02:29 PM

That is correct!

Evisse the Blue 06-16-2005 12:27 PM

Thanks :)

"Above all shadows rides the Sun"

Arestevana 06-16-2005 01:09 PM

It is infinitely delightful to see this thread in play.

Sam's song as he climbs the tower of Cirith Ungol.

Quote:

Though here at journey's end I lie
in darkness buried deep,
beyond all towers strong and high,
beyond all mountains steep,
above all shadows rides the Sun
and stars forever dwell:
I will not say the Day is done,
nor bid the stars farewell.
