Lord Celeborn the Understated

I was reading an article earlier about the extended version of The Two Towers, and I noticed that there was some bonus material featuring Celeborn. Then I thought about how the extended version of Fotr featured a lot more of Celeborn.<P>In the two movies so far, he has had one line, yet he features so much in the films. It just happens to be generally unseen.<P>Many people call Celeborn boring (or more amusingly, permenantely stoned). For anyone who has seen the extended material so far, do you think this makes him a more interesting character? Even if you haven't seen it, what is your opinion of Celeborn, and do you think extra material would enhance his character?<P>Personally, I love the character and thought that the extended material made him even more wonderful, to put it in fangirl terms. I just wish they had left more in.<P>I seem to have waffled on a bit and lost track, so in summary: what do you think of Celeborn, and do you think they should have left more of him in the final version? Would this have made him a better or more interesting character?

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 06-14-2003 08:14 PM

Well, Celeborn was, after all, a pretty important character in the books. I would have liked to see him say more than one line and NOT look permanently stoned. Galadriel takes up all of the spotlight in Lorien in both movies. But we were lucky that in the Extended version of FotR there was Aragorn's receiving of the dagger from Celly himself. In short, Yes, I do wish they had put more Celeborn into the movies.

Corwyn Celesil 06-14-2003 11:48 PM

It could be significant that Celeborn was a kinsman of Thingol of Dorian and was called a prince of Dorian. I seem to recall from my readings that Celeborn had dwelt in Valinor, perhaps that he was one of the Telerian Elves, but I don't remember precisely. In one of the books, perhaps The Lost Tales or The Unfinished Tales, it says that it was Celeborn who gave Galadriel her name--for Elves frequently have three names: a father-name, given at birth by their father, generally sounding somewhat like the father's name (hence the name of Celeborn's daughter is Celebrian); a mother-name, given sometime later by the mother who generally had some insight into the Efl-child's character and future and based the name on that; and a friend-name. Beren gave the name Tinuviel to Luthien, Aragorn gave the name Undomiel to Arwen, and Celeborn gave a name to his wife which she later translated to Galadriel (I don't remember the name she went by before; I'm trying to remember something I read months ago). I have also been much struck by the fact that after Sauron fell, it was Celeborn who traveled north to Mirkwood and helped Thranduil drive out all the evil and restore the forest. I do wish Tolkien had told us a little more about him, and yes, I do wish they had been able to use him much more in the movies.

Everdawn 06-15-2003 01:05 AM

Hurrah for Celeborn!.. as i always say, he is one of my fave elves!... i vas very happy when i found more of him on the extended DVD. It made my day...

Finwe 06-15-2003 09:15 PM

I prefer to think of Celeborn as a Sinda of Doriath, since his name in Telerin Quenya is Teleporno, a name that I would not wish on anyone! <P>I really like the fact that Celeborn's character is improved in the Extended DVD. I think he was the one who did all the "PR" for Lothlorien, and was the one who did all the traveling. I don't think Galadriel traveled if she could help it.

peonydeepdelver 06-17-2003 03:23 PM

Well, Celeborn is deeply underestimated in the eyes of my little brother. He always calls him the Captain of the Nerd Herd, with Haldir as the Vice Captain or whatever. I wish they had at least introduced him as Celeborn. They didn't mention his name in the movie at all (maybe in the theatrical version; I'm not sure...)!

Meela 06-17-2003 03:25 PM

In the extended version, Haldir showed the Fellowship Caras Galadhon and said that the Lord Celeborn and the Lady Galadriel dwelt there.

Phervasaion 06-18-2003 02:12 PM

I never realy thought of seeing lord Celeborn in the movies more, but this thread reminded me of his charector and made me think. If they found enough time in the movies then i also think yes, Celeborn should have been in them more but it would be difficult to find the time with all the other important events.

Caranrûniel 06-18-2003 04:01 PM

Hah! You know what´s funny?<P>I don't mean this in a very rude way (to the actor or anyone else), I just find it a bit hilarious when Celeborn says in FotR <P>"-Tell me, wheeere is Gandaaaalf?"<P>in a way that, you know, non-Germans pronounce English with a "german" accent in movies.<P>Or is this totally out of the blue?

Dashuka 06-18-2003 04:39 PM

That was quite out of the blue. i think if PJ really wants to ruin RotK atleast put celeborn riding up with Aragorn to the black gates with a host of elves. i think it sounds kinda cool.

Duncariel 06-18-2003 06:19 PM

Hey, that wouldn't be right, but knowing PJ, it'll happen anyway.<P>Poor Celeborn, couldn't get a good rap if he paid for it...

Everdawn 06-19-2003 01:13 AM

Or if he really wanted to stuff it up... Celeborn could kill the mordor armies single handed, or wait! he could drop the ring into Mount Doom! I bet that would cause quite a stir!

Meela 06-19-2003 02:14 PM

It would if he used a ladle.

Duncariel 06-20-2003 11:49 AM

I can see it now-<P>"Frodo! Wait for me!" Oh brother.

Lasgalen 06-21-2003 04:11 AM

The Celeborn in the books was a lot wiser than the slow speaking Celeborn in the movies. Do you think we will see him at Aragorn and Arwen wedding?

Everdawn 06-21-2003 04:55 AM

I think the slowness made for a better dramatic scene.

Lasgalen 06-21-2003 05:54 AM

I think that is what PJ's intent was, but a lot of people use that as a focal point for making fun of him.

Meela 06-21-2003 01:39 PM

He thinks before he speaks: the sign of a wise person. Only he just happens to think in words, not sentences.

Finwe 06-21-2003 02:28 PM

Thinking before you speak is all fine and good, but when you talk as slow as Celeborn, you'll start making people wonder whether the editors put that scene in slow motion! I mean come on! There's a bloomin' limit to how slow a body can talk!

Oddwen 06-23-2003 02:44 PM

I for one liked him a whole lot better in the SE edition. "You are being tracked..."<BR>Maybe he talked so slowly because he's used to talking to Galadriel telepathically, or haltingly because he was used to elvish.<P> <BLOCKQUOTE>quote:<HR> But there is no record of when he at last sought the havens, and with him went the last memories of the Elder Days out of Middle-earth. <HR></BLOCKQUOTE><P>Wasn't Galadriel's name Alatariel before?<P>I know I've seen a picture of Celeborn and Elrond talking. Hopefully it'll be in the SE DVD. <P>A ladle. Great. But he'd have to filch it from his wife's punchbowl.

Roccotari Eldandil 06-23-2003 09:49 PM

I think Celeborn is awesome (for reasons previously stated i.e. kinsman of Thingol, etc.). I never really noticed the slow talking before, but it's not really that annoying to me. I think he gets passed over a lot because Galadriel is the one with the ring and the power to keep Lórien the way it is, but I imagine he had a fair say in the realm's government.<BR>I have no idea why, but he reminds me of my grandfather. (Who was also very cool.)

Duncariel 06-25-2003 09:21 AM

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:<HR> Do you think we will see him at Aragorn and Arwen wedding?<HR></BLOCKQUOTE><P>Galadriel told Aragorn in FotR that she would not see him again. And the only time Celeborn really travels alone is to the Havens when Galadriel is already gone.

Finwe 06-25-2003 09:36 AM

Well in the books, it says that both Celeborn and Galadriel came to Aragorn and Arwen's wedding, so perhaps instead of both of them, only Celeborn will come. After all, I think he was quite fond of his granddaughter's choice (unlike Elrond!).

Duncariel 06-25-2003 10:15 AM

I spose that makes sense. After all, one is better than none.

Silmiel of Imladris 06-25-2003 08:40 PM

I have been wondering for months whether this is going to be in TTT SE or ROTK. What do you guys think? That is Elrond that Celeborn is talking to and if you don't believe me I can prove with another picture.<P> <P><A HREF="http://legolas.virtue.nu/Celeborn_at_steps.jpg" TARGET=_blank>Celeborn and Elrond</A><p>[ June 25, 2003: Message edited by: Silmiel of Imladris ]

Meela 06-25-2003 09:06 PM

I have heard that this scene is when Elrond consults Celeborn on the sending of the elves to the aid of Rohan, at Helms Deep, in TTT.<P>But my head is telling me that Elrond's outfit is from Rotk, though I may well be wrong.

Everdawn 06-26-2003 02:16 AM

Well, the more of our wise Celeborn we can get, the better I say!

Silmiel of Imladris 06-26-2003 04:04 PM

Well Elrond often wears the same outfit because he wore that maroon robe thing in the Fellowship and TTT. It looks like an interesting scene but if I was going to place it anywhere it would be in ROTK because it seems like they are in LothLorien and Elrond wouldn't have had time to pay Celeborn a visit in TTT.

Finwe 06-26-2003 08:06 PM

The way that PJ worked the script was that Elrond, Arwen, and most of the Elves of Imladris fled to Lothlorien after an attack of some kind on Imladris (that they were apparently very unprepared for. Bad Rondie! Should have done your homework!). Then Elrond (through his magical psychic vision, I'm sure) figured out that the Rohirrim needed help, and asked Celeborn to send Haldir and some Elves to aid the forces at Helm's Deep.

HCIsland 06-26-2003 08:30 PM

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:<HR> The way that PJ worked the script was that Elrond, Arwen, and most of the Elves of Imladris fled to Lothlorien after an attack of some kind on Imladris <HR></BLOCKQUOTE><BR>I've never heard this one. Where does it come from?<P>If I were to guess, I would say RotK. We have pics of Arwen in Lothlorien as well. I think Elrond follows Arwen to Lothlorien and hash things out before heading down for the wedding.<P>H.C.

StarJewel 06-26-2003 08:36 PM

Celeborn in the extended version of FotR is more developed, mainly because he actually says more than one line. But, we still need to see more of silver top.

Finwe 06-27-2003 08:35 AM

I think I remember reading it somewhere, on a website with the spoilers for TTT and ROTK. Of course, I could be mistaken. But how else would Haldir have been able to say, "I've been sent by Elrond...blah blah blah"?

HCIsland 06-27-2003 01:33 PM

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:<HR> But how else would Haldir have been able to say, "I've been sent by Elrond...blah blah blah"? <HR></BLOCKQUOTE><BR>... because Elrond and Galadriel were shown speaking telepathically in TTT.<P>Personally, I don't think that line came off too well and I suspect it was due to last minute rewrites. Arwen was filmed at Helm's Deep but was cut out. I suspect that she was the one that led the elves there. After the reaction that Arwen got from FotR, perhaps they decided that people would have absolutely flipped if she was at Helm's Deep and so they put in Haldir instead, perhaps through some pick up shots.<P>Just me guessing here. I guess we'll have to wait for the extended TTT to find out.<P>H.C.<p>[ June 27, 2003: Message edited by: HCIsland ]

Duncariel 06-27-2003 05:54 PM

Yeah, Elves at all in Helm's Deep was bad enough. To put Arwen in that perverted mix would be bad karma for New Line. <P>Two Words: Hate mail

Arwen Imladris 06-30-2003 11:49 AM

Sorry, I couldn't find a better thread to put this under, so instead of starting a new thread, I thought I would just put this here. Today, June 30th is Marton Csokas' (Celeborn) birthday! Marton was born on June 30th, 1966 in New Zealand. That makes him 37 today! Happy Birthday Marton!

Meela 06-30-2003 01:17 PM

Happy Birthday darling! I can't believe I didn't notice!

Finwe 06-30-2003 03:04 PM

Happy Birthday Marton dahling!

Everdawn 07-01-2003 01:13 AM

YAY! ...hm, Celeborne's birthday eh?? 37 eh? dont you mean 3700????
