Yes! Well done, Phantom.

'_______ for ________! Why didn't I _____?' he _______, as he _______ did at the _________ of an __________. 'And ___ my beautiful _______ ____ are ____ to the _________-_________! These ____-_____ would do them ____.' He _________. '____ up, _______!' he cried. 'It's a _________ _______.'

Evisse the Blue 09-26-2003 01:17 PM

"Walking for pleasure? Why didn't I drive?" he thought, as he usually did at the beginning of an expedition. "And all my beautiful feather beds are sold to the Sackville Baginses! These tree roots would do them good." He stretched. "Wake up, hobbits!" he cried. "It's a beautiful morning."

Probably a question for the newcomers & novices section, but what is that word 'drive' doing there? I thought there were no cars in Middle Earth??

the phantom 09-26-2003 09:44 PM

Correct.

The word "drive" was around before cars, and it meant travelling by means of horse and buggy (or other similar forms of transportation that did not require walking).

Evisse the Blue 09-27-2003 11:14 AM

Thanks for the info, phantom! Now back to the game:

"Alas for the folly of these days!" said Legolas, "here all are enemies of the one Enemy, and yet I must walk blind, while the sun is merry in the woodland under leaves of gold!"

Very good, Lostgaeriel! Your turn!

Lostgaeriel 10-01-2003 04:39 PM

I never know what passage to use, but I'm hungry and it's supper-time, so I thought this would be fun.

Quote:

They were ______ and in the middle of good ____ ____ of ____ when Mr. _________ and ___ came in again. In a twinkling the _____ was ____. There was ___ ____, ____ _____, a __________ ____, new ______, slabs of ______, and half a ____ ______: good _____ ____, as good as the _____ could show, and ________ enough to ______ the last of ___’_ __________ (already much _______ by the __________ of the ____).

Narduewen 10-01-2003 07:14 PM

Quote:

They were washed and in the middle of good deep muggs of beer when Mr. Butterbur and Nob came in again. In a twinkling the table was laid. There was hot soup, cold meats, a blackberry tart, new loaves, slabs of butter, and half a ripe cheese: good plain food, as good as the Shire could show, and homelike enough to dispel the last of Sam’s misgivings (already much relieved by the excellence of the beer).[

Lostgaeriel 10-03-2003 05:35 PM

Narduewen - you are correct as you well know. [Although I believe it is usually spelled 'mugs'. ] Your turn.

It's been a good while so I'll ressurect this thread:

Side by side they lay, and down swept Gwaihir, and down came Landroval and Meneldor the swift; and in a dream, not knowing what fate had befallen them, the wanderers were lifted up and borne far away out of the darkness and the fire.

That is one of my favorite Tolkien quotes!

Then Curufin looked darkly upon Eol. "Do not flaunt the title of your wife before me," he said. "For those who steal the daughters of the Noldor and wed them without gift or leave do not gain kinship with their kin."
