who said it, to whom, and what things was this person talking about?

Théoden in reply to Ghân-buri-Ghân's 'request' to 'Kill gorgûn! Kill orc-folk! No other words please Wild Men. Drive away bad air and darkness with bright iron.' (The Ride of the Rohirrim)

InklingElf 11-14-2002 06:07 PM

Lostgaeriel 11-14-2002 06:23 PM

It has little to do with hobbits at all.

TolkienGurl 11-15-2002 02:58 PM

Gandalf to Theoden?

Lostgaeriel 11-15-2002 09:46 PM

Aramacil, Precioussss and TolkienGurl are all close, but no cigar. It is indeed Gandalf but to whom was he speaking? And where/when? No more guessing. Show some conviction. (Look it up! )

Sorry! I didn't have my book with me, and I was really eager to post and see if I was right. I think I like this game too much...

TolkienGurl 11-16-2002 11:01 AM

Gandalf to Denethor in Minas Tirith in the presence of Faramir and Pippin. here is the whole quote:

to Faramir (The 'thing' and 'it' is the Ring):
Quote:

'Stir not the bitterness in the cup that I mixed for myself,' said Denethor. 'Have I not tasted it now many nights upon my tongue, foreboding that worse yet lay in the dregs? As now indeed I find. Would it were not so! Would that this thing had come to me!'

'Comfort yourself!' said Gandalf. 'In no case would Boromir had brought it to you. He is dead, and died well; may he sleep in peace! Yet you deceive yourself. He would have stretched out his hand to this thing, and taking it he would have fallen. He would have kept it for his own, and when he returned you would not have known your son.'
Is that enough conviction for you?

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

Here is the next quote:

Quote:

'We must take it and chance our luck...'
Who/Where/to Whom/What is it?

Aramacil 11-17-2002 06:45 AM

Yep, I finally got it

Quote:

"Then we must take the road, Mr Frodo," said Sam."We must take it and chance our luck, if there is any luck in Mordor."
Who?
Sam
Where?
Near the old castle of Durthang in Mordor
To whom?
To Frodo
What is it?
“it” is the road that comes down from the orc-tower

New quote:
Quote:

Well, I'm back
Who/where?

This shouldn’t be so hard.

gralin musicteeth 11-17-2002 06:54 AM

Sammy!!! In Bag End to Rose and Elanor. The very last line of the book, I believe.

Aramacil 11-17-2002 07:03 AM

Yes, I thought it would be a funny quote because it's the last line of the book, but it was to easy.
But please give us a new quote gralin.

Lostgaeriel 11-18-2002 07:26 PM

I must say that some of you are the hastiest quotes players I've ever seen. It's customary to post your answer and wait for the questioner to acknowledge that you are correct before you post a new question.

Of course, TolienGurl was correct and documented her answer, so you all knew she was correct. Giving context is always a good idea. It helps us all learn.

Have fun. And relax.

Orual 11-22-2002 08:50 PM

It sounds like something Gandalf said to Theoden to me...

Legolas 11-23-2002 12:58 AM

No.

Beruthiel 11-23-2002 01:15 AM

Ok then was it Legolas to Gimli ( I'm just guessing now)

Joy 11-23-2002 01:33 AM

It is Frodo to Sam in the Tower of Cirith Ungol concerning the Orcs taking everything. Frodo told Sam that he still had his lembas but the food Faramir gave had been taken.

Legolas 11-24-2002 12:21 PM

Yes, Joy.
