The Character Formerly Known As...

The Lord of the Rings took around thirteen years to write. The book, naturally, didn't stay the same in those thirteen years--there were changes, upheaveals, many, many revisions. Among these changes were the names of the characters. In this thread, I'll give the original name, and you tell me what name this character ended up with.

We'll start with Bladorthin.

I didn't think this was ever resolved, apart from a guess that he was a King of Dorwinion in the east. But plz correct me if I am wrong.

Orual 01-14-2003 09:42 PM

Eh, is this controversial? I've only seen one source with this, so if it is a source of controversy, I'll certainly take it down. But no, the answer that I'm looking for isn't a king.

Merry or Pippin or Saruman...

GANDALF!

Beren87 01-15-2003 03:36 PM

My sources say he was a king, probably an elf, who ordered spears from the Dwarves of Erebor but died before they were delivered. The name is found in the Hobbit.

Legolas 01-15-2003 04:43 PM

Quote:

They wondered if they were still lying there unharmed in the hall below: the spears that were made for the armies of the great King Bladorthin (long since dead), each had a thrice-forged head and their shafts were inlaid with cunning gold, but they were never delivered or paid for;
Looks like a king to me.

LePetitChoux is right. Bladorthin was Tolkien's original name for Gandalf. (Or at least, so it said in the booklet that came with the Map of the Hobbit.)

I don't know if I was very clear with the instructions in my first post: this is a quiz thread for the ORIGINAL names of characters. Like, names that Tolkien gave them in the first drafts and later on changed.

LePetitChoux, carry on.

I can't find anything. As Beren87 was the only one apart fro me who answered, I gallantly give up my turn.

Beren87 01-17-2003 12:01 PM

Ah! Thank ye, Lepetit, 'twas a kind gesture.

Highdei.

Sapphire_Flame 01-17-2003 12:12 PM

You should know who this is:

Trotter.

Beren87 01-17-2003 12:15 PM

Erm, Sapphire_Flame, I just asked a question.

The current word is, Highdei

Sindae 01-17-2003 05:12 PM

Trotter was Aragorn...glad that Tolkien changed it!!!
Well, I think it's my turn now, isn't it? If not ignore this:
Who is Faramond Took?

The current word is Highdei? Oops...I'm sorry, didn't notice it...well just ignore Faramond ok?

Highdae: One of the Valar? (as in "High Deity"?)...but it doesn't sound godly enough...
Ioreth?

It keeps reminding me of a member called Sindae...

As for Faramond Took, Pippin. Or Bullroarer.

I'm awfully Sorry, Legalos! I completely didn't notice you! So Beren87 wasn't the only one who answered...Sorry sorry sorry! How can I make it up to you?

Beren87 01-18-2003 12:15 PM

HAha, lets just use Faramond Took.

Mine are absurdly difficult.

Sindae 01-18-2003 04:42 PM

Well, Pippin is right.

hobbitlass 01-19-2003 11:35 PM

Just to be a smartacre, Highdei is Shire reckoning for Friday. According to 'Complete guide to Middle-Earth'.

Beren87 01-20-2003 12:41 AM

Well, a smartacre you will always be hobbitlass! (Though my must say your in the company of the best when on this site)

So I believe it's Lepetit's turn.
