I think this is a good thread to bring back. We have nothing like it going now.

I'll start!
Quote:

A hunted man sometimes wearies of distrust and longs for friendship.

Russandol 01-26-2003 01:59 PM

Yes I agree Alaklondewen. This one was Aragorn speaking to the four Hobbits in the Prancing Pony after they had read Gandalf's letter.

alaklondewen 01-26-2003 06:30 PM

Right you are! Please proceed.

alaklondewen 01-29-2003 10:01 AM

Russandol? Just a reminder.

Russandol 01-30-2003 11:08 AM

Phew, it's only been three days! Things move on apace in Quotable Quotes methinks.

Anyway my offering is this.

Quote:

Oft hope is born, when all is forlorn.

Guinevere 03-01-2003 02:48 PM

This was said by Legolas to Gimli when they were rowing (sailing) up the Anduin to the battle of the Pellennor fields.

By the way, I have a question to you people from English speaking countries: Did Tolkien make up all these proverbs in his books? Or are some of them real existing proverbs in English?? Just wondering...

Guinevere 03-12-2003 01:49 PM

Will no one confirm my answer? Russandol obviously isn't around.... So am I allowed to proceed?

Rochelle 03-12-2003 02:47 PM

I say go ahead!

Lalaith 03-12-2003 03:40 PM

In answer to Guinevere's question, nearly all of Tolkien's proverbs are made up by him although they sound very authentic, don't they?
The only 'genuine' English saying quoted here is 'handsome is as handsome does.'

(Tolkien's proverbs are delightful but real English proverbs too, IMO. My favourite is 'Fair words butter no parsnips.')

Guinevere 03-13-2003 03:34 AM

Thank you, Rochelle and Lalaith!

Here is another proverb then, that sounds very "authentic", too!

Quote:

"Faithful heart may have forward tongue."

Lostgaeriel 03-15-2003 08:04 PM

That is Théoden to Gandalf about Éomer. The King of the Golden Hall

Quote:

'I owe much to Éomer,' said Théoden. 'Faithful heart may have forward tongue.'

Guinevere 03-16-2003 01:44 PM

Well done, Lostgaeriel!
Your turn!

Lostgaeriel 03-16-2003 10:21 PM

Quote:

He thinks less than he talks, and slower; yet he can see through a brick wall in time

alaklondewen 03-16-2003 11:41 PM

"(as they say in Bree)", I believe that is the rest of the sentence by Gandalf to Frodo in the Last Homely House. They are speaking of Old Barliman of course.

Lostgaeriel 03-17-2003 08:27 PM

You think pretty fast, alaklondewen. Your turn.

alaklondewen 03-17-2003 08:49 PM

Thank you, Lostgaeriel.

Quote:

Make it short, and then you won't have to cut it short before you can use it.
I think that's something we can all live by.

Lostgaeriel 03-17-2003 09:14 PM

Oh, that's Samwise to Frodo discussing girl's names for his firstborn. He's quoting the Gaffer.

Quote:

'I suppose you're right, Mr. Frodo,' said Sam. 'I've heard some beautiful names on my travels, but I suppose they're a bit too grand for daily wear and tear, as you might say. The Gaffer, he says: "Make it short, and then you won't have to cut it short before you can use it." But if it's to be a flower-name, then I don't trouble about the length: it must be a beautiful flower, because, you see, I think she is very beautiful, and is going to be beautifuller still.'
Nice gardening image re: cutting flowers.

alaklondewen 03-17-2003 10:25 PM

You're right. That Gaffer is a fountain of knowledge. Take it away, Lostgaeriel.

Lostgaeriel 03-18-2003 07:52 PM

Two clichés for the price of one:

Quote:

... but he is slier than a fox, and slippery as a fish.

alaklondewen 03-18-2003 09:02 PM

Is this Aragorn at the Council of Elrond describing Gollum?

Rochelle 03-18-2003 09:16 PM

Is it Sam referring to Gollum?

Lostgaeriel 03-18-2003 09:59 PM

Ooh! alaklondewen!

Quote:

Is this Aragorn at the Council of Elrond describing Gollum?
Sometimes less is more. You've got the speaker and the subject matter - just the location is wrong. Just jump ahead about 4 months. Do you know the context now?

I'll give it to you anyway. Your turn.

alaklondewen 03-21-2003 10:18 AM

Yes, of course, on the shores of the Anduin after Frodo heard Gollum hiss. Thank you for letting me have it anyway.

Now for the next...
Quote:

...a lie with a grain of truth.

Eressië Ailin 03-21-2003 11:57 AM

This is really familiar... I know Gandalf said it... At the Council of Elrond, maybe? about Gollum? I don't have my book to check...

alaklondewen 03-21-2003 12:56 PM

Gandalf did say it about Gollum, but not at the Council. He said it in Bag End in The Shadow of the Past, but since you had the right idea...It's your turn.

Eressië Ailin 03-22-2003 03:44 PM

Thank you!

This is in RotK, when Gandalf and Pippin ride to Minas Tirith. As they arrive at the North gate of the Rammas Echor they are talking to some men of Gondor.

"Man!" cried Pippin "I am a hobbit and no more valiant than I am a man, save perhaps now and again by necessity."
"Many a doer of dreat deeds might say no more," said Ingold "But what is a hobbit?"

Eressië Ailin 03-24-2003 08:18 AM

Correct! Your turn, Guinevere.

Guinevere 03-24-2003 09:18 AM

Thank you!

(Another one that sounds like a genuine proverb to me... )

Eressië Ailin 03-24-2003 04:09 PM

Once again, I do not have my book, but I would have to say Legolas to Èomer in TTT.

Guinevere 03-25-2003 07:19 AM

Sorry, Eressië, wrong guess!
Does anyone know?

alaklondewen 03-25-2003 10:00 AM

I think this sounds like Gandalf speaking about Sauron's first motion toward war, and the fact that he was setting his troops in motion earlier than he originally meant. Now, I don't remember whether he said this to Denethor, Faramir, or Pippin, but it was after he and Pippin arrived in Minas Tirith. Again, this is all off the top of my head.

Guinevere 03-26-2003 02:37 AM

It wasn't Gandalf either.
Though you are right that it is about Sauron striking too early.

alaklondewen 03-26-2003 08:20 AM

Yes, of course...I forgot about Aragorn. Did he say it after looking in the Palantir? To Legolas and Gimli, maybe?

Guinevere 03-26-2003 03:53 PM

Exactly ! Your turn, Alaklondewen.

alaklondewen 03-28-2003 10:01 AM

Thank you!

For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time.

Narduewen 03-28-2003 11:01 PM

From Aragorn to the Riders of Rohan after one remarked "Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?" That is one of my favorite quotes.

alaklondewen 03-29-2003 09:13 AM

Well Done, and Welcome to the Downs! I believe the board is yours.

Narduewen 03-30-2003 02:38 PM

Okay heres one I found

"Where will wants not, a way opens."

Guinevere 03-30-2003 03:48 PM

This was said by Dernhelm (=Eowyn) to Merry in "The muster of Rohan" when she offered to take him on her horse.
