Re: Did Hobbits have Money?

That is a really good question, Balin. One I don't know the answer to, unfortunately. I would, however, love to know. Anyone?

Re: Did Hobbits have Money?

They had gold. Bilbo tried to take Bill Huggins' purse. In the troll-cave there were pots full of gold coins, which bilbo was able to spend once back in the shire.

What's a burrahobbit got to do with my pocket, anyways?

Re: Did Hobbits have Money?

Gandalf handed out pennies to hobbit-children when he came to Hobbiton. And Bill the pony cost 12 silver pennies. I'm sure Gandalf's pennies for the kids weren't silver, though.

Re: Did Hobbits have Money?

also, if you remember, in the 1st chapter of The Hobbit it's mentioned Bilbo rushing out of his hole and forgetting his hat, walking stick and his money - things he usually got with him when he went out. And coming back from his journey he actually bought all his possesions back

Re

the day when i wrote this question i read in the third chapter that "frodo was running out of money"
so we have the answer
but in my opinion money is not as important in middle-earth as it is in the real world.

Re: Re

I can raise another question instead - what was Frodo's income? How he gained above named money? OK, Bilbo lived on trolls' gold, but frodo? - there is never mentioned no real estates of his- except his hole, of course, but he lives there for years, has servants and gardeners, but is not working (I mean, he has no any job giving him some income), the rooms of his hole are not used for rent, still he's rich enough to spend his life as he likes. so, were is the source of his richess?

ps cf lotho has farms and mills. ted sandyman has a mill, brandybucks have several possesions, maggot is a farmer, but what about Bilbo and Frodo?

Re: Re

Bilbo's treasures from his adventures were more than enough to support him and Frodo for a long time to come. But even without that gold he was well-off. He came from two of the wealthiest families in the Shire - Tooks and Baggins, and Frodo came from another wealthy clan - the Brandybucks. The Bag End estate seemed to support itself on stockpiled wealth and reputation. I don't believe either Frodo or Bilbo had any kind of occupation.

They probably have some sort of currency. Gold, silver and copper coins most likely. I doubt they'd have paper money.
