Each lost extremities after being captured by their enemies, save Morgoth:

Huor - head hewn at the close of the Nirnaeth
Maedhros - bye bye, hand
Azog - beheaded by vengeful dwarves
Gelmir - dismembered in front of his brethren by Morgoth's minions

Re: Odd man out continued...

I'll give it to Mister Underhill because he has the right idear, although I dont quite agree - But it's probably me that is wrong ...

I thought Huor was odd out because he was killed by an arrow (it was said that the people which he fell among was beheaded, not he himself precisely. (But he was dead)
Azog was beheaded by Dain (Iguess he was alive when it happened?)
Gelmir - need I say
Maedhros - like Underhill said - bye bye
but Morgoth, didn't he have his feet hewn "from under him"? My english is proberly not good enough to determine wether he was just knocked off his feet or his feet was actually hewn off?

Go on Underhill!

Re: Odd man out continued...

Wow! This is an active forum. This thread has already dropped to the second page!
Quote:
Yet with his last and desperate stroke Fingolfin hewed the foot with Ringil, and the blood gashed forth black and smoking and filled the pits of Grond.

Morgoth went ever halt of one foot after that day, and the pain of his wounds could not be healed; and in his face was the scar that Thorondor made.

I always assumed that Fingolfin just gave him a really nasty wound to the foot. "Halt of one foot" means, I think, that he was lame in that foot forever afterward, not that he was necessarily walking around on a stump or some kind of iron pegleg. I could be wrong, though.

I haven't cooked up a new one yet -- but stay tuned. New Odd Man Out momentarily...

Re: Odd man out continued...

I never thought Morgoth's foot was cut off either -- just wounded -- but it would make a nice symmetry. Morgoth footless, Sauron (and Frodo) fingerless.

Get you gone, and fly! For here is a fire that shall consume you and all evil things.

Oh, you people! When Fingolfin wounded him he was only wounded. When he was captured for the last time at the very end of the Silmarillion, the Valar cut off his feet and locked him up foe once and for all.

"Good Morning!" said the dragon. "You seem surprised."
"Good Morning! said Farmer Giles. "I am that!"

I'll pose one:

Feanor
Fingolfin
Gandalf
Frodo
Sam

HINT: the answer has something to do with travel, in a manner of speaking.

No that's not it. Although Fingolfin is not the answer, he used this particular mode of travel in a way different than the other non-odd men.

Yes, you got it, Sam. All except Feanor were borne by an eagle, Fingolfin only after he was dead. I gues I cd have put Bilbo and Fingon in there, too, might have made it easier. Your turn, Sam.

That's an odd one, Sam. Is it Shelob because it's the only name derived from old English rather than an elven language?
