Thank you, Evisse. The amount of proverbs in Tolkiens books is astonishing ! (I've started collecting them...) Most of them he made up himself, I guess, but they sure sound like genuine old sayings.

Gandalf to Pippin after he swore the oath to Denethor.

Guinevere 08-21-2003 04:04 PM

correct! Your turn again, Evisse !

Evisse the Blue 08-22-2003 05:36 AM

Okay, I worked hard to get his one

Quote:

"There's no accounting for East or West."

Guinevere 08-27-2003 02:17 PM

Hm, so far, I've no idea where to look for that one!

Evisse the Blue 08-29-2003 12:20 PM

The full quote is
Quote:

There's no accounting for East or West, as we say in Bree, meaning the Rangers and the Shire-folk, begging your pardon.
This should put you o the right track.

Mithisilien 09-01-2003 02:16 PM

Would that be Barliman Butterbur?

Evisse the Blue 09-01-2003 03:41 PM

Yes. Would you mind elaborating on the circumstances?
Then you're free to post a new one.

Mithisilien 09-01-2003 04:31 PM

Hahaha, I could be a jerk and say "In The Prancing Pony".... nah. It was part of his response to Frodo about who and what Strider was. Right after he said "Goes about at a great pace on his long shanks; though he don't tell nobody what cause he has to hurry".

Aragorn to the Fellowship when they are landing at Parth Galen (below Amon Hen)
(But that's not a proverb??)

Mithisilien 09-04-2003 04:32 PM

was it supposed to be? ahhhhh, I'm sorry. *hangs head* oh well. You got it! Even if the question was wrong...*twitch* ok.

Guinevere 09-05-2003 02:59 AM

Never mind, Mithisilien! But look at the title of the thread...

Mithisilien 09-05-2003 01:58 PM

I have no idea why it didn't register. I tend to miss stuff like that...

Guinevere 09-12-2003 12:54 PM

Does no one recognize that proverb? To give you a hint: it's from TTT .

Mariska Greenleaf 09-12-2003 01:18 PM

Was it Theoden?

Guinevere 09-12-2003 02:32 PM

Yes, but to whom and where?

Mariska Greenleaf 09-29-2003 02:42 AM

To Aragorn and Gandalf, about the Palantir in Isengard.

What do you mean, it took me a long time to find it???

Okay, I just forgot, I'm sorry...

Guinevere 09-29-2003 04:46 AM

Right you are, Mariska! Please proceed!

Mariska Greenleaf 09-29-2003 01:51 PM

Ok thanks!
I really hope this next one counts as a proverb, adage, aphorism, saw, wise saying or cliché or whatever...

I like it, who said this?

Guinevere 09-29-2003 02:40 PM

Ah, that is Gandalf to Pippin in Minas Tirith! And afterwards he adds "One piece I greatly desire to find is Faramir."

Mariska Greenleaf 09-30-2003 04:00 AM

That's it, of course

Do you need a hint? It's from U.T.

Mariska Greenleaf 10-20-2003 06:53 AM

Thanks for the hint!

That was Gelmir talking to Tuor.

It certainly was, Mariska! Please continue.
(I feared already no one would ever come and look at this thread...)

Mariska Greenleaf 11-07-2003 06:05 AM

It took me some time to come up with a new one, but, at last here it is...

This starts with "Many are the strange chances of the world..." and is said by Mithrandir to Elrond at the first White Council (In the Silm.)

Mariska Greenleaf 11-10-2003 04:08 AM

Very good!
Tour turn!

Guinevere 11-10-2003 01:47 PM

Thank you!

Theoden talking to Merry...

Guinevere 11-12-2003 01:19 PM

That's it!

Mariska Greenleaf 11-13-2003 04:10 AM

Quote:

Do as your heart calls.

Guinevere 11-20-2003 08:09 AM

That one took quite a lot of searching! First I thought it was Ulmo to Tuor, but he says "Do as your heart and valour lead thee."
Then I found Turin saying to Niniel:" Do as your heart bids you."

But finally I found the right one : "Do as your heart calls, onya." said Meneldur to Aldarion before he went on his first voyage.

Mariska Greenleaf 11-20-2003 08:24 AM

good job!
All yours.

Guinevere 11-20-2003 08:42 AM

Thank you Mariska. Ha, now I must be careful not to use one of the proverbs from Esty's new game (btw I have been contributing to that one)
Hmmm how about:
Quote:

Few can foresee whither their road will lead them, till they come to its end.

Guinevere 11-27-2003 03:06 AM

Do you need a hint? It's in TTT.

Mariska Greenleaf 12-04-2003 06:43 AM

That was Legolas talking to Aragorn and Gimli.

Guinevere 12-04-2003 09:23 AM

Yes! Well done, Mariska!
(I wonder why we two are the only ones on this thread?? )

Mariska Greenleaf 12-04-2003 09:29 AM

Yes, it is indeed strange, because this is a wonderful topic isn't it?

Oh well, I got a new one for you:

Quote:

There are locked doors and closed windows in your mind, and dark rooms behind them.
It's not really a wise saying, more of a metafor I guess. I hope that's allright.
