Thank you, Evisse. The amount of proverbs in Tolkiens books is astonishing ! (I've started collecting them...) Most of them he made up himself, I guess, but they sure sound like genuine old sayings.

Gandalf to Pippin after he swore the oath to Denethor.

Would that be Barliman Butterbur?
|
Yes. Would you mind elaborating on the circumstances?
Then you're free to post a new one. |
Hahaha, I could be a jerk and say "In The Prancing Pony".... nah. It was part of his response to Frodo about who and what Strider was. Right after he said "Goes about at a great pace on his long shanks; though he don't tell nobody what cause he has to hurry".

Aragorn to the Fellowship when they are landing at Parth Galen (below Amon Hen)
(But that's not a proverb??) |
was it supposed to be? ahhhhh, I'm sorry. *hangs head* oh well. You got it! Even if the question was wrong...*twitch* ok.
|
Never mind, Mithisilien! But look at the title of the thread...

I have no idea why it didn't register. I tend to miss stuff like that...

Does no one recognize that proverb? To give you a hint: it's from TTT .
|
Was it Theoden?
|
Yes, but to whom and where?
|
To Aragorn and Gandalf, about the Palantir in Isengard.
What do you mean, it took me a long time to find it??? Okay, I just forgot, I'm sorry... |
Right you are, Mariska! Please proceed!
|
Ok thanks!
I really hope this next one counts as a proverb, adage, aphorism, saw, wise saying or cliché or whatever... Quote:

Ah, that is Gandalf to Pippin in Minas Tirith! And afterwards he adds "One piece I greatly desire to find is Faramir."
|
That's it, of course

That was Gelmir talking to Tuor. [ October 20, 2003: Message edited by: Mariska Greenleaf ] |
It certainly was, Mariska! Please continue.
(I feared already no one would ever come and look at this thread...) |
It took me some time to come up with a new one, but, at last here it is...

This starts with "Many are the strange chances of the world..." and is said by Mithrandir to Elrond at the first White Council (In the Silm.)

Very good!
Tour turn! |
Thank you!

That one took quite a lot of searching! First I thought it was Ulmo to Tuor, but he says "Do as your heart and valour lead thee."
Then I found Turin saying to Niniel:" Do as your heart bids you." But finally I found the right one : "Do as your heart calls, onya." said Meneldur to Aldarion before he went on his first voyage. |
good job!
All yours. |
Thank you Mariska. Ha, now I must be careful not to use one of the proverbs from Esty's new game (btw I have been contributing to that one)
Hmmm how about: Quote:

Do you need a hint? It's in TTT.
|
That was Legolas talking to Aragorn and Gimli.
|
Yes! Well done, Mariska!
(I wonder why we two are the only ones on this thread?? ) |
Yes, it is indeed strange, because this is a wonderful topic isn't it?
Oh well, I got a new one for you: Quote:
