The Golden Ring Marathon
The Golden Ring Marathon is an annual event we shall try to initiate on October 20th 2005. That is the 50th anniversary of the publishing of Return of the King.
The number fifty is perfect, as it is not only a number that comes around once in a century, but also the age at which both Bilbo and Frodo began their journeys. On that day we plan to gather with friends, relations, other LotR freaks...or just in the company of our beloved Fellowship, to watch all three Extended Edition Lord of the Rings Films, one after the other. This thread has been posted for suggestions and/or thoughts as to this event. Fill it up and spread the word! The more the merrier! Frodo Lives! Revive the slogan! |
Ah! So you started the new thread! Well done! I suppose I shall have to put my last comment on the other thread here, too.

my friends and i will celebrate this new holiday(maybe i will fake being sick and stay home and watch my LotR movies)
im glad someone thought this up thanks |
Well, I'm sure if some of you have kind of nice teachers, they will let you borrow a TV or something, and watch part of the movie during lunch. I know some of the teachers at my school will probably let me do that, although, by then, I'll probably be at Uni, since I graduate in 2005.
|
Ah, so we finally have a new home... *stretches out and relaxes* Cozy.
I think Oct 20th of 2005 is on a Thursday... dunno though.. could be Friday, but in any case, I'm almost positive it's a weekday. But oh well! This is FAR more important, right? |
Well, a lot of sites on Google seem to think it's Wednesday, but considering that next year is Leap Year, it seems like it should be a Thursday... who knows.
|
Right on. I definitely plan on participating.
Oh, and just a note, it's not "First Annual", its "Inaugeral". Let's get our terms correct please. Abedithon le, ~*~Aranel~*~ [ August 29, 2003: Message edited by: Sapphire_Flame ] |
Sorry, Sapph. I'll have to think about that, not sure that everyone would really know the difference.
Glad you're participating though. It'll be great. |
Why wouldn't everyone know the difference?
Abedithon le, ~*~Aranel~*~ |
I don't know. But,(even being the geek that I am) I didn't...

I'm definately going to celebrate! It's on a Thursday, so I might have a party that saturday!

Thanks Luthien, that is exactly what I was trying to say.

I'll have just begun my freshman year of college, hopefully I won't have any classes that day, Can you believe it's already almost 2005! |
You know, I was thinking maybe we should make it tri-annual instead...because who knows, if this thing carries on for 50 years, we're gonna get sick of watching them over and over and over again...aren't we?
Tri-annual could be good, cos there's three films...ooh and three Elven Rings...ok that's taking it a bit far. And I had never heard of inaugral, let alone being able to tell the difference! Quote:

Quote:
Do you think that's actually possible? |
Well...yes actually...*ducks to avoid flying tomatoes* Impossible as it may seem, twenty years hence we will know these films so well we will be able to recite the scripts! Elvish and all! Ooh, wouldn't it be great if this day was made an international holiday?????!!!!!!!
Ok, so I gather a tri-annual Ringday isn't going down too well...oh well... |

Good grief...I only know a few words, and that's annoying enough for my friends as it is!!! Not that you reciting all three extended editions at a word's notice would be annoying in any way...
But I have got as far as attempting to understand the Elvish...not that I'm any good, I can only understand things like 'galad' and 'govannen' !!! (From the Fellowship that is, haven't got the DVD of TTT) |

I don't think I could ever get tired fo them. I've seen FOTR 14 times and TTT 6 times, and I'm not really tired of those yet. I could watch FOTR EE, in particular, many many times without tiring of it. And if I can read the books four times without tiring, than I doubt I'll get tired of the movies, either. Especially not ROTK! |
Yeah, ok, ok!!! Well I find I need to read the books over and over again, because for some reason the details filter out of my brain like they pass through a seive. Oh man, I can't wait for ROTK!
|
No offense, Elentari, we weren't trying to get after you for saying that or anything, just saying that we wouldn't tire of them. But your opinion is perfectly valid and probably true for some people. No offense taken, I hope?

Think of it this way: it will impress the really smart people, and force everyone who doesn't know what it means to use their dictionary. Abedithon le, ~*~Aranel~*~ |
Ah, Lúthien, no offense taken, don't worry!
Is someone going to get back to me about the school holidays you guys have in America or what??? |

I just had an idea! We should all invite Tolkien newbies (friends you have that haven't seen the EE yet) over to our houses to experience the LotRness with us. And we can serve Lembas as appetizers! ^_^ |
Hehehe, thanks...and when do you break up for the summer hols, and when do you go back?? (For me, it's around the 23rd July, and go back on the 4th September- this year anyway. Private schools break up a couple of weeks earlier and go back a couple of days before us).
How on earth do you make lembas??? |
Elentári, for lots of lembas recipes and ideas, just enter "lembas" into the search function box (click on "search", upper right corner of the page).
By the way, everyone, dates of school holidays are not Tolkien related. If you want to know about them, please use PMs. |
Hey guys, thanks to everyone who has joined!
A suggestion: join all the forums you can and start threads like this one! Spread the Word! Tell everyone! Oh, and I'm sorry, Estelyn. Shan't happen again. *bows respectfully and walks away* |
yay! I'm excited guys. My friend and I were going to watch all three after they came out on video anyway in one weekend, so now we actually have an exscuse! I love making themed food and such too. Lembas are so tasty!
|
IS this Ring MArathon something like a big event where tons of RINGYS gather, or is it just something that you host in your own home?
|
Just gather in your home, or a fellow addicts (perhaps with a bigger screen ) to do it.
I would let you all come here, since my Dad has a dedicated home theatre with a 5x8 foot screen (oh yess, lifesize Gollum.) and a sound system that sounds better than any theatre we've ever ben to... but I don't think my parents would appreciate that too much. |
Maybe we could get a certain Mr. Jackson into it!!! Then we could watch all of them in the Embassy together!!! (mmmmm, NZ's best sound giant screen and shaking seats, ohhh yeah!!!)
Lookie, Everyone!!! *points down* Lembas!!! | | \ / V Ingredients: 2 1/2 cups of flour 1 Tablespoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 8 Tablespoons cold butter (1 stick) 1/3 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 2/3 cup milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla Honey or maple syrup for dipping Preheat over to 425 degrees. Mix flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Add butter and mix with a fork or pastry cutter until mixture looks like fine granules. Add sugar and cinnamon and mix. Add milk and vanilla and stir with a fork until dough forms. (You can add a little bit more milk than the recipe calls for if it gets too hard to stir.) Roll into balls and place on cookie sheet, mashing them out until they are about 1/2 inch thick and 3 inches across. Makes about 12 – 14. Bake for about 12 minutes or until insides aren't gooey. Wrapped in mallorn leaves they will stay fresh indefinitely. Wrapped in plastic wrap they are good for about a week. Delicious dipped in honey or syrup. |
That is so kewl, Morgul Queen! Where did you find that recipe?
Abedithon le, ~*~Aranel~*~ |
Firstly, read my signature.
Secondly, does anyone know the conversion from Farenheit (sp?) to Celcius? (For the benefit of us Britons, or wherever else which uses a slightly more logical temperature scale ) So yeah, PM me about your summer hols, someone! I'm interested! |

Anyway to make up for the off-topicness of this post: here are some themed food ideas: bill the pony cookies (I have horse cookie cutters) Broken carrots and dip (you know when Merry lands on the carrot) Lembas! any more ideas? you can add on here , since I don't want to take up another thread. |
Someone suggested lime green Koolaid for Ent-draught in another thread.
|
It does sound wonderful, for the Ent-draught. Only...I don't think we have it here in England, so it'll just be you American guys growing a few inches taller
Bill the Pony cookies!!! (As in cookie cookies yes, not biscuit cookies...do you have biscuits?? Ahhh, this language difference thing is fascinating!) Marvellous idea!!! Sorry, I really can't think of anything else...hmm... |
Ent-draughts, cool. I like the whole idea myself.
