Finish the Song

I saw something like this for quotes but not for the songs/riddles/poems in the books so I thought I'd start one. Rules are simple. I'll give anyone who wants to play a couple lines from a song riddle or poem in one of the various books by Tolkien. Your job is to give me the next line and who said it. Whoever gets it right can do the next one. Ready? Let's play. I'll start off with an easy one:

Persuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way

From: The Fellowhip of the Rings.

Alright. Next line and the singer?

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 08-25-2003 03:00 PM

Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say.

Sung by Frodo and Bilbo.

Amaris Ethne 08-25-2003 05:40 PM

Very good! The first song sung in the book. And sung by Gandlaf in the movie. It is your turn, Horse-Maiden of the Shire. Let us see who can guess yours.

Narduewen 08-25-2003 07:45 PM

I hope you don't mind me interrupting here. The version of the Old Walking Song that you quoted was not sung by Frodo. He sung one very similiar with weary feet instead of eager feet.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 08-25-2003 10:38 PM

Whoops! Silly moi. Thanks for pointing that out, Narduewen.

But still the sunken stars appear
In dark and windless Mirrormere

Again, from the Fellowship.

Narduewen 08-26-2003 12:15 AM

Gimli sung that to the fellowship in Moria.

There lies his crown in water deep,
Till Durin wakes again from sleep.

Horse-Maiden of the Shire 08-26-2003 11:18 PM

Ta! You are correct, Narduewen.

Narduewen 08-27-2003 12:32 AM

Thank you Horse-Maiden. (btw, i love the pic!)

As cold as death;
Never thirsting, ever drinking;

Mariska Greenleaf 08-27-2003 06:33 AM

as cold as death
never thirsty, ever drinking
All in mail, never clinking

One of the riddles Bilbo asked Gollum.

Narduewen 08-27-2003 09:51 AM

Nope, that would not be the song that I quoted.

Luthien_ Tinuviel 08-27-2003 11:52 AM

clad in mail, never clinking.
Drowns on dry land,

Gollum's riddle/song/thing in the Passage of the Marshes.

Narduewen 08-27-2003 01:09 PM

That is correct Luthein. You may proceed.

Luthien_ Tinuviel 08-27-2003 08:28 PM

the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.

From the Return of the King.

Silmarien 08-27-2003 10:03 PM

In western lands beneath the Sun
the flowers may rise in Spring,
the trees may bud, the waters run,
the merry finches sing.
Or there maybe 'tis cloudless night
and swaying beeches bear
the Elven-stars as jewels white
amid their branching hair.

Sung by Sam in the Return of the King.
That is one of my favourite poems.

Luthien_ Tinuviel 08-29-2003 11:42 AM

One of my favorties, too. You are of course correct. Now I'm wondering: why did I say that it was from the Two Towers? Your turn, Silmarien!

Silmarien 08-29-2003 08:41 PM

The horses came galloping up in rear,
the cow came capering like a deer,

Silmarien

Narduewen 08-29-2003 10:36 PM

While his horses galloped up in rear,
And the cow came capering like a deer,
And a dish ran up with the spoon.

Frodo sings that in Bree.

Silmarien 09-01-2003 06:55 PM

Well done!!!

Amaris Ethne 09-07-2003 03:59 PM

Narduewen, it is now your turn to post a song. If you do not in the next couple days, I shall just to keep the game moving along. I do hope you are okay, however!

Sorry, I had forgotton that I had posted here. Next song,

Quote:

A wanderer escaped from night
to haven white he came at last,

Quote:

A wanderer escaped from night
to haven white he came at last,
To Elvenhome the green and fair
where keen the air, where pale as glass

From Bilbo's Earendil Was a Mariner, as told in Rivendell in the book FOTR

Narduewen 09-23-2003 09:15 PM

Well done, Arwen! Please proceed.

Arwen1858 09-23-2003 09:57 PM

Quote:

With foes ahead, behind us dread,
beneath the sky shall be our bed
Who sang it, and when?

Arwen_Evenstar 09-24-2003 12:14 AM

With foes ahead, behind us dread,
Beneath the sky shall be our bed
Until at last our toil be passed,
Our journey done, our errand sped

Sung by Merry and Pippin in The Fellowship in a conspiracy unmasked

Arwen1858 09-24-2003 11:43 AM

Very good, Arwen_Evenstar! Your turn.

Arwen_Evenstar 09-25-2003 12:02 AM

Thanks!

Tom's leg is game, since home he came
And his bootless foot is lasting lame
Who, when and where?

Quote:

Tom's leg is game, since home he came
And his bootless foot is lasting lame
But Troll don't care, and he's still there
With the bone he boned from it's owner.

As sung by Sam in FOTR, in the chapter 'Flight to the Ford.'

This is fun!!

Arwen_Evenstar 09-26-2003 12:42 AM

'Tis indeed!
Correct, Arwen! Your turn!

~Nat~

A wind by night in Northern lands
Arose, and loud it cried.
Who sang it, and when?

Evisse the Blue 09-26-2003 01:12 PM

It is the lay of Nimrodel, as sung by Legolas, near the river Nimrodel on the borders of Lothlorien in FOTR.

Arwen1858 09-26-2003 04:04 PM

Right, Evisse! Your turn
Arwen

Evisse the Blue 09-27-2003 11:34 AM

Stupid me, I didn't realize I had to continue the stanza! It went like this: "And drove the ship from elven-strands/Across the streaming tide".

Continue for as long as you want:

He chanted a song of wizardry,
Of piercing, opening, of treachery,

Narduewen 09-28-2003 09:22 AM

Quote:

He chanted a song of wizardy,
Of peircing, opening, of treachery,
Revealing, uncovering, betraying.
Then sudden Felegunnd there swaying
Sang in answer a song of staying,
Resisting, battling against power,
Of secrets kept, strength like atower,
And trust unbroken, freedom, escape;
Of changing and of shifting shape,
Of snares eluded, broken traps,
The prison opening, the chain that snaps.
Backwards and forwards swayed their song.
Reeling and foundering, as ever more strong
The chanting swelled, Felagund fought,
And all the magic and might he brought
Of Elvenesse into his words.
Softly inthe gloom they heard the birds
Singing afar in Nargothrond,
The sighing of the Sea beyond,
Beyond the western world, on sand,
On sand of pearls in Elven land.
Then the gloom gathered; darkness growing
In Valinor, the red blood flowing
Beside the Sea, where the Noldor dlew
The Foamriders, and stealing drew
Their white shis with their white sails
From lamplit havens. The wind wails,
The wolf howls. The ravens flee.
The ice mutters in the mouths of the Sea.
The captives sad in Angband mourn.
Thunder rumbles, the fires burn-
And Finrond fell before th throne.

This is part of the Lay of Luthein that shows of the power of Sauron.

Thank you Evisse!

A little clue perhaps? Which book is it in? I've searched all of them and can't find it.

Narduewen 10-07-2003 07:37 PM

Wow, really. I thought that it was too easy, but you asked for a clue so a clue you shall get. It is in FotR.

Amarantha_Daisy 10-08-2003 02:46 PM

Got it!

A deadly sword, a healing hand,
a back that bent beneath its load;
a trumpet-voice, a burning brand,
a weary pilgrim on the road.

Sung by Frodo in Lothlorien.

Narduewen 10-08-2003 07:51 PM

Well done Amarantha! Your go.

lothiriel 10-09-2003 12:37 AM

Guess I didn't search too well... Now I recognise it. Anyway, congrats Amarantha!
