The Chapter Game

My humble apologies if this has been done before. The rules are fairly simple. You put in a paragraph and you have to guess from which chapter and book its from
First one
Quote:

Down the road from the gate they fled.In fifty places, with a swift bend round a jutting bastion of the cliff, it took them out of sight from the Tower. They had escaped for the moment.Cowering back against the rock they drew breath, and they clutched at their hearts. Pearching now on the wall beside the ruined gate the Nazgul sent out its deadly cries. All the cliffs echoed.
LOTR, The Silmarillion and The Hobbit are the books you can choose from.

This belongs in Quotable Quotes.

The Saucepan Man 09-07-2003 04:41 PM

It surely does. It also might prove rather easy. But for now, I shall move it to Quotable Quotes and see how it fares.

Please continue the game there.

The Saucepan Man 10-03-2003 10:11 PM

Alas, it has not fared well. Topic closed.

Airerūthiel 10-04-2003 01:07 AM

As the game isn't actually closed, can I guess that it's from Return of the King, involving Frodo and Sam, therefore...is it Book 6, chapter 2?

Sleepy Ranger 10-04-2003 07:23 AM

yep thats correct. You're turn.

Airerūthiel 10-04-2003 08:23 AM

I'm having a lot of lucky guesses in these games recently...OK here goes:

Quote:

There were no clouds overhead yet, but a heaviness was in the air; it was hot for the season of the year. The rising sun was hazy, and behind it, following it slowly up the sky, there was a growing darkness, as of a great storm moving out of the East. And away in the North-west there seemed to be another darkness brooding about the feet of the Misty Mountains, a shadow that crept down slowly from the Wizard's Vale.

Sleepy Ranger 10-04-2003 08:29 AM

I think its from the Two Towers Book III
Chapter 5.

Airerūthiel 10-05-2003 01:43 AM

You're half right - it is from Book Three, but it's not Chapter Five. Good try though.

Sleepy Ranger 10-05-2003 07:24 AM

Got it.
Book 3
Chapter 7:Helms Deep
I should have checked this earlier.

The Saucepan Man 10-05-2003 06:49 PM

Ahem! This topic should have been closed.

However, since it has gained a new lease of life, I suppose that there's no reason why it should not continue for the time being. Provided, of course, that it proves to be an interesting and challenging game ...

Airerūthiel 10-06-2003 11:54 AM

Well done Sleepy Ranger, it is Chapter 7.

Just as a query, what's the rule for this game on the book? Do we allow people to look stuff up or just expect them to guess?

How will we not if they've checked or not?
Besides it'll be too tough if we try and guess. Oh by the way call me Sleepy
And from now on you can also give one from the Silm or The Hobbit.
Ok the question...

And some there were who said:'Why should we not go even to Aman, and taste there, were it but for a day, the bliss of the powers? Have we not become mighty among the people of Arda?'
Oh by the way if you want to guess you can
If I can't guess it I'll check.

Fyara 10-24-2003 11:43 AM

book 3 i forget what chapter

Sleepy Ranger 10-24-2003 02:21 PM

Its not from LOTR

Beren87 10-25-2003 01:59 PM

From The Akallabeth, the beginning of Paragraph 17.

Quote:

And some there were who said: "Why should we not go even to Aman, and taste there, were it but for a day, the bliss of the Powers? Have we not become mighty among the people of Arda?"

Sleepy Ranger 10-25-2003 02:21 PM

The Silmarillion, Chapter 21, Of Turin Turambar.(one of my fav chapters)

Elentarimir 10-26-2003 07:45 AM

Sorry, Sleepy, but you've got the chapter wrong.

Beren87 10-26-2003 10:50 AM

Ah, he was close.

The first line of paragraph 5 in Chapter 23, "Of Tour and the Fall of Gondolin".

It reads:
Quote:

At length they came in their journeying to the Pools of Ivrin, and looked with grief on the defilement wrought there by the passage of Glaurung the Dragon; but even as they gazed upon it they saw one going northward in haste, and he was a tall Man, clad in black, and bearing a black sword. But they knew not who he was, nor anything of what had befallen in the south; and he passed them by, and they said no word.

Elentarimir 10-26-2003 05:26 PM

That's it, Beren, your go!

Beren87 10-27-2003 03:13 PM

Quote:

Elentarimir 10-27-2003 05:48 PM

Might that be the Return of the King: the Siege of Gondor yet again?

Beren87 10-27-2003 08:41 PM

That it is..yet again.

Elentarimir 11-29-2003 05:35 PM

Whoops! Forgot about this topic...

Quote:

"They set a watch on the tower, I believe, but the watchers were so well hidden in the shadows and kept so still, that I could not see them."

Sleepy Ranger 11-30-2003 08:49 AM

The Two Towers.
Flotsam and Jetsam.

Elentarimir 11-30-2003 01:56 PM

You are correct, Sleepy! Your go!

Sorry for taking so long but I was defending my room from being breached by a group of HP fans.

Elentarimir 02-11-2004 07:27 AM

I'd say that was the Two Towers: Book III: Chapter One: The Departure of Boromir.

Sleepy Ranger 02-11-2004 07:51 AM

Correct. Totally correct. Absolutely correct. It is in no ways wrong it is correct from every angle and dimension. In fact it is soooo correct that it can not be a bit wrong.
Ok I'm done.
Next question please

Elentarimir 02-17-2004 02:27 PM

Thanks, Sleepy.

Suddenly they came out into the open again and found themselves under a pale evening sky pricked by a few early stars. There was a wide treeless space before them, running in a great circle and bending away on either hand.

Arvedui III 02-28-2004 01:58 PM

Umm...could we have a hint?

Evisse the Blue 02-28-2004 03:14 PM

Might that be from FOTR: Three is company?

rutslegolas 02-29-2004 11:45 PM

yes i think it is from three is company

Elentarimir 03-02-2004 03:42 PM

Sorry Evisse, but it's not from Three is Company.

Certainly Arvedui, here it is: this quote is from Fellowship of the Ring.
