This game has do do with the "numbers" of LOTR...
The first person will post a number, and the answer will have to be (correctly) what that number has to do with LOTR.

For example, if I put up the number "9", the answer would be: "The number of Walkers" or "The number of the Ringrwraiths".(some might have more than one answer. It's up to the poster how many of the possible answers they want)

Anyway, if you'd like to try it, here's the first number:
What's the significance of this number in LOTR?

"I don't know about that," said Sam. "But how would this suit? It ain't what I call proper poetry, if you understand me: just a bit of nonsense. But these old images here brought it to my mind."
Standing up, with his hands behind his back, as if he was at school, he began to sing to an old tune.

Lothiriel Silmarien 08-06-2002 07:05 PM

This is a really great idea Samwise!!! I don't recall any significant thing that has to do with 99. I'll have to go look or something! I'll be back!

Samwise 08-06-2002 07:08 PM

TY, Lothriel! 99 does have to do with something!

Troll sat alone on his seat of stone,
And munched and mumbled a bare old bone;
For many a year he had gnawed it near,
For meat was hard to come by.
Done by! Gum by!
In a cave in the hills he dwelt alone,
And meat was hard to come by.

Telchar 08-07-2002 02:00 AM

The talk did not die down in nine or even ninety-nine days.
which is probably what you are after... you could also claim that 99 was the age at which Bilbo began to be called 'Well preserved' or maybe you are thinking about the age of Dora Baggins ?

Lothiriel Silmarien 08-07-2002 08:55 AM

I don't even need to try to guess now!

Samwise 08-07-2002 10:43 AM

Goodness....actually, though, no. None of those were the answer I was going for in this case.

Said Tom: 'I don't see why the likes o' thee
without axin' leave should go makin' free
With the shank or the shin o' my father's kin;
So hand the old bone over!
Rover! Trover!
Though dead he be, it belongs to he;
So hand the old bone over!'

Lothiriel Silmarien 08-07-2002 11:01 AM

The only thing I can remember currently is 99 bottles of beer on the wall. But I know that isn't it. Could 99 be how many years for something. Like, in the First Age, it was one year before the foundation of Nargothrond. Or how about (First Age still) it was 1 year after the Return of the Noldor. Eh, probably not. Can you spare us a hint??

Samwise 08-07-2002 11:11 AM

It's not as complicated as you're making it. Hint: the answer is in the very beginning of the story (well, down a paragraph or two....)

'For a couple o' pins,' says Troll, and grins,
'I'll eat thee, too, and gnaw thy shins.
A bit o' flesh meat will go down sweet!
I'll try my teeth on thee now.
Hee now! See now!
I'm tired o' gnawing old bones and skins;
I've a mind to dine on thee, now.'

The Green Ringwraith 08-07-2002 11:52 AM

When bilbo was 99, he adoptd Frodo as his heir!!

Samwise 08-07-2002 11:56 AM

That's it!!!!! You're up!

But harder than stone is the flesh and bone
Of a troll that sints in the hills alone.
As well set your boot to the mountain's root,
For the seat of a troll don't feel it.
Peel it! Heal it!
Old Troll laughed, when he heard Tom groan,
And he knew his toes could feel it.

Amantathraiel 08-07-2002 02:31 PM

hurry up this is fun

The Green Ringwraith 08-07-2002 09:18 PM

Oh. My. Um, lets see... This MIGHT be a bt hard, it might not... Dunno. I'm not too terribly good at riddles, making them up at least.

What does the number "20" have to do with the books?

Samwise 08-07-2002 10:48 PM was 21 when he was adopted by Bilbo.....mmmm.....let me get back to you....does this have more than one answer, or are you looking for something specific?

Sam stood by him, his round eyes wide open - for he was looking across lands he had never seen to a new horizon.

The Green Ringwraith 08-07-2002 11:00 PM

Kinda something specific. Its kinda easy, so easy you might skip over it. Either that or I'm screwed, on a cafiene high at midnight, and not perceiving how hard it is. Probably the latter. I'm going to bed now- gotta get up erly to watch that new DVD! ANYWAYS.. yeah. specific

Telchar 08-08-2002 01:29 AM

9+7+3+1 = 20 rings of power

Samwise 08-08-2002 11:33 AM

Hm. Telchar, I think the next time I see you in a game, I'll just split 'cause you're too smart! That's probably it!

"If you don't come back, sir, then I shan't, that's certain." said Sam. "'Don't you leave him!' they said to me. 'Leave him!' I said. 'I never mean to. I am going with him, if he climbs to the moon, and if any of those Black Riders try to stop him, they'll have Sam Gamgee to reckon with.' I said. "

The Green Ringwraith 08-08-2002 12:23 PM

You're right telchar! *gasps* I knew that wasn't hard. Or else you're just really smart.

Lothiriel Silmarien 08-08-2002 05:07 PM

AH! Came too late, came too late! As I was reading along, (I start from my last post) and I saw your quetion, I knew it was the Rings of Power! Hey, that's enough for me, atleast I didn't guess to myself!!

Telchar 08-09-2002 12:07 AM

OK - what about 5 ?

The Green Ringwraith 08-09-2002 12:02 PM

At one point in their lives, each member of the Fellowship was five years old. Well, anyone in ME for that matter, but...

NazgulNumberTen 08-09-2002 12:03 PM

5 istari

Samwise 08-09-2002 03:24 PM

Okay, this is really stretching it....
Holman the Green-handed, my great-grandfather
(me bein' Samwise, o' course), had five children.

"Elves! " exclaimed Sam. "Elves, sir!" He would have burst out of the trees and dashed off, if they had not pulled him back.

NN10 is of course right

NazgulNumberTen 08-09-2002 04:39 PM

cool, now i gotta think of something
ok, 1431.

Samwise 08-09-2002 04:46 PM

Hm. Well, in that year, Sam's daughter Goldilocks was born....(she later married Faramir I, son of Thain Peregrin I....)

Sam looked from bank to bank uneasily. The trees had seemed hostile before, as if they harboured secret eyes and lurking dangers; now he wished that the trees were still there. He felt that the company was on a river that was the frontier of war.

NazgulNumberTen 08-09-2002 04:56 PM

how did i know samwise would know that?
well i guess it's your turn...

Samwise 08-09-2002 04:59 PM

Well, now, Mr. Nazgul, sir, don't you think I'd remember when my own kids were born?

Hm. Now I've got to think something up.....

NazgulNumberTen 08-09-2002 05:06 PM

it's like asking you gardening tips...

Samwise 08-09-2002 05:06 PM

Okay, here goes.....
<font color="aqua">130

"Swans!" said Sam. "And mighty big ones, too! "

Samwise 08-09-2002 05:10 PM

it's like asking you gardening tips...

"For you, little gardener and lover of trees," she said to Sam, "I have only a small gift." She put into his hand a little box of plain grey wood, unadorned save for a single silver rune upon the lid.

Wandering but not lost 08-09-2002 05:48 PM

The age of the Great Took when he died?

Samwise 08-09-2002 05:52 PM

<font color=aqua>Well, I never knew the Old Took, but I'll say he was a Great guy, why not? Yes, "Wandering", that's the answer. Welcome both to the 'Downs and the game! Go ahead and post a number!

At that moment Sam came running back from the edge of the dell.

Wandering but not lost 08-09-2002 06:05 PM

the number is.... 6

Two LOTR-Based Stories I've Started......

"I don't know what it is," he said, "--but I suddenly felt afraid. I durstn't go outside this dell for any money. I felt that something was creeping up the slope. "

Samwise 08-13-2002 06:55 PM

Hm. Well, there are the 6 children of Hamfast and Bell (Goodchild)Gamgee...

Gollum claimed only to have 6 teeth, however Butterbur made a strong point that he didnt have six legs and six eyes - and Merry of course had six ponies in the stables in Buckland - Gloin told Frodo that it took six young Dwarfs to lift fat old Bombur and Bergil brought Aragorn six leaves of Kingsfoil.... just to mention a few.

Samwise 08-14-2002 12:35 AM

Wandering but not lost, which were you going for....if any of these?

"You don't need to tell me that!" said Sam. "I came without any, and I've been worried ever since. But I was wondering what these were made of, knowing a bit about rope-making: it's in the family as you might say. "

Wandering but not lost 08-14-2002 11:06 AM

ummmm no it's none of those. hate to say it but it's simpler than that. keep trying

Lothiriel Silmarien 08-14-2002 02:17 PM

There were 6 members of the Fellowship at one time, after Frodo and Gandalf went into the West-Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Sam, Merry, and last but definetly not least, Pippin.

Samwise 09-12-2002 08:19 PM

Hm. Well, I think that one was a little bit confusing. A trophy goes to "Wandering" for stumping us. Anywho, I'd like to post another number, since it's been over a week since the last post.

The number...

Any idea what this pertains to?
