Lindir's Question

I don't believe this has been done. Please don't kill me if I am wrong. This is a game that focuses on the question Bilbo asked Lindir in Rivendell. (which verses are mine and which are the Dunedan's?) The question is posted in the form of a poem. The answer: which verses are Tolkiens's and which are the poster's? The responder who guesses correctly posts the next verses.
It might be helpful to others if you were to say where you found the verses. I'll start easy, but I expect this will go way over my head in about four posts, I'm no good at this. Here goes!
She sings and these empowers;
birds, beasts, trees, flowers
Yet one there came to slay, to sting
And there she halted listening
The wolf howls, the ravens flee
And darkness swells; a rising sea
Doom approaches, the Dead awaken
She faltered and her song was shaken
She lightly fled on dancing feet
But doom was swift her fate to greet
And doom fell on Tinuviel
Who's likeness dwelt in Rivendell.

Good Luck!

OK, lines 1, 3, 8, 10, and 12 are your creations, Arestevana. Either 5 or 6 may also be your creation, but if one is, it escapes me now....

Let me know if I'm right.

Arestevana 06-01-2003 02:35 PM

You know me too well, friend. Yes, those are mine. Line 6 is also mine, though I should have numbered them. Please continue.

Elentarimir 06-01-2003 02:48 PM

Thank you Arestevana!

OK, here goes nothing.....(I'm numbering lines to make it easier )

1) Let them a journey new begin
2)To walk on ways unknown to men
3)With golden roof and silver floor
4)Let them build a new home once more
5)Like the setting, rising sun
6)The day's end or the day's begun
7)In glades beneath the misty fell
8)There I end the tale I tell.

This is MUCH harder than it looks...

Some of those are a giveaway too, but it's the best I have right now. Guess away!

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-01-2003 06:31 PM

I believe two, three, seven and maybe eight are Tolkien's...

You have two right and two wrong, Thunder Mistress. Continue guessing!

Arestevana 06-02-2003 01:35 PM

I agree with Sophia (usually a very wise decision), but I am fairly certain that line 8 is NOT Tolkien's. I thought line 1 might be, it sounds like something Bilbo said. I'm not quite sure he ever said it though.

Edit: Make that "agreed" You beat be to it, Elentarimir. (always did type faster than me) Okay, three is YOURS.

Line 8 IS mine(it was sorta a giveaway). However, three more lines are my creations. There, I gave you a hint. Figure it out!

Arestevana 06-02-2003 01:42 PM

Yours are: Four. Eight. Two. And either 5 OR 6. Right? I'm guessing 6. Note- GUESSING!

Elentarimir 06-02-2003 01:45 PM

Number 5 is mine. But yes, Arestevana, those are all mine. Well, your turn.

Ah, This is harder than I thought! Okay, no more easy questions. Note- It is not necessary to use an entire verse. A partial line is still Tolkien's.

1) The dusk, the dawn, the earth, the sea,
2) In darkness buried deep;
3) My people that have gone before me
4) Now and ever weep
5) At journey's end I lie
6) My breath is death's cold spell
7) As with that breath I die, and
8) Bid the stars farewell

Edit: I forgot to number again.

I'm sure that "at journey's end I lie" is Tolkien's, but other than that....

ATTENTION: Elentarimir's brain has just gone dead. When it has recharged, she will be back to tell you the answers. Signing off...

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-02-2003 07:21 PM

Two, five, and eight are certainly Tolkien's.

Elentarimir 06-03-2003 04:45 AM

I have to think 1, 3, 4, 6, and possibly 7 are yours.

GaladrieloftheOlden 06-03-2003 05:30 AM

I think 3, 4, 6, and 7 are yours.

Arestevana 06-03-2003 01:27 PM

Go ahead Galadriel! Three is Tolkien's not mine; a quote of Legolas'. You were closest though! Please continue.

Arestevana 06-09-2003 03:01 PM

I'll PM Galadriel. This will bump to the top, and that should help too!

GaladrieloftheOlden 06-11-2003 08:56 PM

I'm really sorry to have forgotten about this thread, but my memory is going at a young age . However, I have a problem. I can't find any of my Tolkien books except FotR, and you all know the quotes from that anyway, so would somebody mind taking my turn? I'm very sorry.

This spot is up for grabs; you guys were all pretty close, so the next person on can take a go.

Arestevana 06-18-2003 05:30 PM

Right. *sighs* An easy one.

1-Whose shall the horn be
2-In the lost isle calling?
3-In a far country
4-the round sun is falling
5-east and onward
6-hoofbeats afar
7-comes the standard
8-that calls them to war

Fedaeglin 06-22-2003 01:01 PM

Are the first 6 Tolkien's, and the others your's?

Arestevana 06-22-2003 03:02 PM

Quite right! Welcome to the downs, Fedaeglin!
