Middle-Earth Cryptograms

If you don't know what a cryptogram is, it's just a phrase/sentence (etc.) with all letters represented by other letters.

Therefore:

JFB HFBHLAQV
is an example of a cryptogram for
TOM BOMBADIL

As you see, Fs represent Os and so on...

PLease try and use phrases with the letters A and/or I alone, and words with similar letters, so solving it isn't impossible! :D And please don't have a letter represent itself (A representing A etc.) I don't know how well this game will go, because it will probably involve solving on paper. ONe more thing! It's not like hangman, it's either all at once or nothing...here's an easy one to start off:

LMO DZMA WL DHTO WJOY RTT,
LMO DZMA WL EZMV WJOY,
LMO DZMA WL FDZMA WJOY RTT
RMV ZM WJO VRDIMOQQ FZMV WJOY.

Is it ...

One Ring to rule them all
One Ring to find them
One Ring to bring them all
And in the Darkness bind them.

?

Bombadil 04-23-2004 10:39 PM

Perfect Saucepan! You're up!

The Saucepan Man 04-25-2004 05:14 PM

Thanks Bombadil. :)

And, for the same reason, I think that we should stick to reasonably well-known phrases and avoid obscure quotes.

And I'm moving this to the Quotable Quotes forum, as I think that it is probably better suited there.

So, next question:

HCT QXGT VJG OKUVA OQWPVCKPU EQNF
VQ FWPIGQPU FGGR CPF ECXGTPU QNF
YG OWUV CYCA GTG DTGCM QH FCA
VQ UGGM VJG RCNG GPEJCPVGF IQNF

It should be fairly straightforward if you can work out the meaning of 'QNF'. :)

Far over the Misty Mountains cold
To dungeons deep and caverns old
We must away ere break of day
To seek the pale enchanted gold.

The Saucepan Man 04-26-2004 02:32 AM

Perfect!

Well done, Bombadil. :)

Back to you.

"Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden!
Fell deeds awake; fire and slaughter!
Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
A sword-day, A red day ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor

Lady, you know all my desire, and long held in keeping the only treasure that i seek. Yet it is not yours to give me, Even if you would; Only through darkness shall i come to it,

Not sure...is this right?

Ho! Ho! Ho! To the bottle I go
to heal my heart and drown my woe.
Rain may fall and wind may blow,
and many miles are still to go,
but under a tall tree I will lie,
and let the clouds go sailing by.

(sometimes 2 letters were used in indicate the same letter)

Bombadil 05-01-2004 03:04 PM

Quote:

For once more lust of battle was on him; and he was still unscathed, and he was young, and he was king: the lord of a fell people.
Referring to Eomer as he set his banner in defiance at the black ships at the Battle of Pelennor Fields.

luthien-elvenprincess 05-07-2004 05:34 AM

You bit well! Correct.

The Saucepan Man 05-07-2004 06:41 AM

Thanks, luthien. :)

How about this one? I suspect that it will be fairly straightforward:

luthien-elvenprincess 05-07-2004 11:55 AM

But I do not choose now to do what I came to do. I will not do this deed. The Ring is mine!

Spoken by Frodo at Mount Doom.

The Saucepan Man 05-07-2004 05:04 PM

You have the solving of it, fair Princess. I yield the thread to you. :)

Is this right? I am not sure... if it is, then there were many mistakes in the puzzle. :p

Down leaped Shadowfax like a deer that runs surefooted in the mountains. The White Rider was upon them and the terror of his coming fooled the enemy with madness.

Bombadil 05-17-2004 05:40 PM

its all right except for the fooled. just look again, I'm pretty sure the leteers for that word are properly represented :)

luthien-elvenprincess 05-18-2004 04:23 PM

Here we go...
Down leaped Shadowfax, like a deer that runs surefooted in the mountains. The White Rider was upon them, and the terror of his coming filled the enemy with madness.

luthien-elvenprincess 05-19-2004 03:27 AM

Excellent as usual, Bombadil :)
