(I know several in Tolkien's Minor works, but those are not so well known.)

Like Farmer Giles of Ham or Leaf by Niggle? I think we'd have to get a consensus before picking quotes from non-Middle-earth stories.

Anyway, here's an insult...

Quote:

...nasty suspicious-looking creatures, and rude as well.

Nerwen 06-15-2008 08:21 PM

Balin, referring to the crows.

Sorry for the late reply. You are most certainly correct, and it's your turn.

Nerwen 06-18-2008 04:41 AM

Okay:

Quote:

needless baggage on the road...

Maedhros_the_Tall 06-18-2008 07:41 AM

Feanor to Maedhros after abandoning the better part of the host of the Noldor?

Nerwen 06-18-2008 07:51 PM

Yep!

Your turn.

Maedhros_the_Tall 06-20-2008 03:07 PM

(This is probably a bit easy, but I haven't got my books handy to reference, they're all packed up! Lol.)

"Descendant of rats!"

Nerwen 06-21-2008 04:47 AM

Thorin to Bilbo.

Maedhros_the_Tall 06-22-2008 03:51 AM

Yes indeed! Thought you might get that one rather swiftly! :p

Your turn Nerwen!

Nerwen 06-22-2008 08:34 AM

I did– once I checked the thread. :p

Quote:

Maggots!

Dimturiel 06-22-2008 11:06 AM

The Isengarders to the other orcs while running on the plains of Rohan?

Nerwen 08-03-2008 07:17 PM

Sorry, Dimturiel, I missed your answer!

You are, of course, correct. Please take the thread.:)

Dimturiel 08-04-2008 02:09 AM

Thanks.

Here you are.

Nerwen 08-04-2008 08:02 AM

Saruman to Gandalf, about Merry and Pippin.

Dimturiel 08-05-2008 01:41 AM

Yup. Go ahead.

Galadriel55 01-10-2011 08:34 PM

Who said this one:
"A dirty treacherous fool"

Evisse the Blue 01-16-2011 07:07 AM

Grishnakh about Saruman

Galadriel55 01-16-2011 09:27 AM

Correct, Evisse!

Evisse the Blue 01-16-2011 09:37 AM

Who called who:

'dotard chamberlain of an upstart'

Guinevere 01-16-2011 11:08 AM

I think that was Denethor telling Gandalf that he (Denethor) didn't want to be the dotard chamberlain of an upstart (meaning Aragorn) (right before he jumped on his pire)
Btw, welcome back, Evisse! nice to see you posting again in the Downs!

Evisse the Blue 01-16-2011 12:12 PM

Thanks for the welcome, Guinevere :) It's so awesome that this place hasn't changed a bit in all these years : D

And of course you are correct about the quote.

Guinevere 01-18-2011 01:58 PM

who called who:

"ninnyhammer"

(too easy I know, but I didn't have time to find anything more challenging that hasn't been used yet...)

Galadriel55 01-18-2011 04:18 PM

That was Sam calling himself when he forgot about the elven rope at Emyn Muil(and he said that the Gaffer called him that back in the Shire ;))

Guinevere 01-19-2011 04:04 PM

Exactly! :)

Galadriel55 01-19-2011 04:36 PM

Thanks, Guinevere!

Craven lord of slaves

Pitchwife 01-19-2011 04:58 PM

Fingolfin challenging Morgoth to single combat, if I'm not mistaken.

You are not!

Pitchwife 01-19-2011 05:56 PM

Thanks!:)
A long-standing favourite of mine:

You are one of the fools whom spring would not mourn if you perished in winter.

Galadriel55 01-19-2011 06:15 PM

That would be Mim talking to Ulrad, one of the outlaws, when they were speaking about the edible plants that Mim gave them.

Pitchwife 01-19-2011 06:24 PM

Bingo! Back to you.

Galadriel55 01-19-2011 06:37 PM

Thanks!

Little snufflers

Guinevere 02-20-2011 10:36 AM

That would be the big fighting orc to the small tracker orc in Mordor, overheard by Frodo and Sam.

But I am not sure if I will be able to spot any more insults that haven't been used yet...:(
(except from the minor works.)

Galadriel55 02-20-2011 10:49 AM

You are absolutely correct, Guinevere!:D

Maybe there is something that someone thought but not said, if that could be considered an insult...

Guinevere 02-24-2011 01:35 PM

I hope this counts as an insult:

Quote:

Fey are you both, and foolhardy.

Galadriel55 02-28-2011 06:32 PM

I think it's an insult. This quote is bugging me: it sounds familiar, but I can't picture anyone saying it. A clue, maybe?:Merisu:

Just a shot in the dark - Aragorn? It sounds like something he'd say to Gimli and Legolas...

Guinevere 03-02-2011 12:52 PM

It's neither from LotR, nor from the Hobbit.

Galadriel55 03-02-2011 04:18 PM

I would never have guessed it, even with the clue, if I didn't happen to come across it while rereading that part of COH yesterday. It's Mablung, talking to Morwen and Nienor, when they go to Nargothrond to look for Turin. Morwen wanted to search herself, but Mablung dissuaded her.

Guinevere 03-03-2011 03:48 PM

Exactly!

Well done, Galadriel55. :)

Galadriel55 03-03-2011 06:17 PM

Thanks! But that was more luck than me... :)

I didn't want to use an insult that's too obscure, or use one that is aplied to every character (like fool). I hope this one will count!

Faint-hearted

PS: it's not really an insult, but it kind of is...

Guinevere 03-09-2011 02:15 PM

Hm, could it be Túrin to his kinswoman Aerin (the Easterling's wife)?
