Nope, still not what I'm looking for. The first line is a near direct (slightly adapted) quote from the source, and the second line hints at the word itself.

Sophia

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-27-2003 01:10 PM

*bump* Saucepan? I thought you'd get this in fifteen seconds... Where all you interpreters of vaguely non-straightforward clues?

The Saucepan Man 05-28-2003 06:51 AM

Sorry. Not been on much in the last few days.

It's the Oath-breakers.

When doom approaches the halls of silent kings: This presumably refers to Aragorn fulfilling the prophecy of Malbeth the Seer and entering the Paths of the Dead to hold the Dead Kings to their oath.

The great waves follow the promised words of old: Breakers (great waves) following oath (promised words of old).

*bows* Thank you! I was beginning to think I'd actually written a difficult question .

Since when did you ever ask any easy ones, Sophia?

Who foretold that more would be heading north?

Gil-Galad 05-29-2003 04:09 PM

i doubt my anwser, Malbeth or Arvedui

The Saucepan Man 05-30-2003 07:20 AM

You are correct to doubt your answer, Gil-Galad.

Finwe 05-30-2003 08:13 AM

Saruman?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-30-2003 05:28 PM

Bill Ferny, either him or his Squint eyed companion.

The Saucepan Man 05-30-2003 06:13 PM

Indeed, it was the squint-eyed southerner that I had in mind. Very well done, Sophia.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 05-30-2003 08:52 PM

Thanks Saucepans . It came to me in a flash... LOL. I'll be back with you as soon as I have time to think of a decent question.

In Shadow and old Memory I stalk
The unwary are my prey.
Beside the sleepless waters,
under the shadows of old mountains,
Those I find are unremembered
and their children love the darkness.

Lasgalen 06-02-2003 02:14 AM

Shelob feasting on orcs?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-02-2003 07:29 PM

nope

Lasgalen 06-02-2003 09:33 PM

Melkor preying on the Avari?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-02-2003 11:00 PM

After long and thoughtful consideration, I've decided to accept this. All theories of orc origin aside, there was certainly an unknown hunter that stalked the Quendi at Cuivienen. I don't know that it was necessarily Melkor, but you got the idea, Lasgalen. The floor is yours.

Sophia

Lasgalen 06-03-2003 12:34 AM

Who lived where the shadows 'were thickest and deepest'? (sorry I can't make a poem out of my question.)

The Saucepan Man 06-03-2003 04:38 AM

Complete guess, as I haven't got my books to hand, but is it Ungoliant?

Gil-Galad 06-03-2003 06:53 AM

sauceman is probaly right but i'll try to guess Shelob

Lasgalen 06-03-2003 01:35 PM

Ungoliant is correct.

The Saucepan Man 06-07-2003 08:54 PM

Thank you Lasgalen.

Take a counsellor
Of most treacherous mind,
And rob him of language
My kindred to find.

Great treasures I gained
From those who like such things,
And on my death they passed
To the fathers of the Eorlings

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-07-2003 09:24 PM

Take a counsellor
Of most treacherous mind, - Wormtongue
And rob him of language - Minus Tongue
My kindred to find. -Worm

Great treasures I gained
From those who like such things,
And on my death they passed
To the fathers of the Eorlings - Killed by Fram son of Frumgar

Scatha the Worm of course!

The Saucepan Man 06-08-2003 05:19 PM

A perfect answer, Sophia.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-08-2003 05:41 PM

This is terribly easy, but I'm attempting to make about four riddles at the moment, so it's the best I can do.

We are roughened,
followed by a breath,
moved by the last of the music,
where forever it echoes.

Gil-Galad 06-09-2003 04:17 PM

i ahev a starneg feelign it has soemthign to do with when Frodo and the Hobbits were in the Barrow-Wights tomb, and Tom came singign to save htem

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-09-2003 09:29 PM

Your strong feeling leads you very much astray, Gil-Galad .

Sophia

Lasgalen 06-10-2003 02:59 AM

Melkor creating the orcs?

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-10-2003 04:32 PM

No. When working out a riddle, or clue of this type, it helps you to show how you came to that answer, cause then I could say: "No, your answer's wrong, but here's what you're right about." It helps me to know too, if people are getting close, so I can give better hints if nobody guesses.

Gil-Galad 06-12-2003 03:35 PM

could it be abotu the Balrogs when Melkor cried and they came, you can always here his cry in the mountains

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-12-2003 06:24 PM

Still no, Gil-galad, but thanks for showing me how you got the answer you did

Sophia

Estanesse 06-13-2003 07:21 PM

Black Númenóreans

They attacked Gondor followed by a great plague
The last part of the great music of the Ainur did go about men ruling ME

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-13-2003 08:07 PM

Nope, but getting slightly warmer.

Finwe 06-13-2003 09:31 PM

Corsairs of Umbar? I'm trying to name all of the "bad guys" related to the Black Numenoreans.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-14-2003 07:28 PM

Yes, that is it Finwe, but so disappointing that you didn't use my clues, I was so proud of them.

We are roughened = Coarse (which sounds like Cors)
followed by a breath = air (Corsair)
Moved by the last of the music (of the Ainur)
Where forever it echoes = in water, which moves ships.

Carry on, Finwe.

Sophia

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 06-22-2003 02:30 PM

Finwe? *bump*

Finwe 06-27-2003 08:28 AM

Sorry! I had forgotten entirely about this thread!

We are the festival,
where rabbits romp,
We are the little ones,
Rather than the large.
We were deceived,
By the one who deceives,
We named the others,
After their animals' food.

Lasgalen 06-30-2003 12:37 AM

The Easterlings in Dor-Lomin?

Finwe 06-30-2003 11:31 AM

Yes.

The Saucepan Man 06-30-2003 12:56 PM

Lasgalen, when answering riddles such as this, you should give an explanation of how you arrived at the answer. This prevents "lucky guesses" and it is also interesting for those of us who may have puzzled over the riddle to see how it works. (It also gives the "riddler" a sense of satisfaction. )

So, please elaborate ...
