Death Quotes

Right, i made a search on this and I cant find anything exactly like it so hear it goes. Its simple really. One person will quote a line from just before, just after after or during a death scene in any of Tolkiens books (but it must have something to do with the death). Who ever answers correctly will be able to find the next quote.

Heres the first one:

Quote:

Yea, I will drink thy blood, that I may forget the blood of Beleg my master, and the blood of Brandir slain unjustly. I will slay thee swiftly.

Eruanna 03-28-2004 04:27 PM

Said by Gurthang, the black blade of Turin Turambar, when Turin asked if it would slay him quickly. Afterwards Turin threw himself onto the blade.
From: 'Of Turin Turambar', 'The Silmarillion'

Not sure how much information you need :)

Phervasaion 03-30-2004 11:27 AM

Just say who said it to who and whose death it was about...Anyway that was right Erunna :D . Your turn.

Eruanna 03-30-2004 03:41 PM

Thanks Phervasaion :)

Quote:

"Here shall you fail of all your hopes, and here may you yet die the same death as I."

Luthien_ Tinuviel 03-30-2004 03:54 PM

I've got it!

Quote:

So you forsake your father and his kin, ill-gotten son! Here you shall fail of all your hopes, and here may you yet die the same death as I.
Eöl to Maeglin just before his (Eöl's, that is) execution in Gondolin.

Eruanna 03-31-2004 03:20 PM

Absolutely correct Luthien. :D

Please proceed!

Luthien_ Tinuviel 04-02-2004 02:42 PM

Here you go.....

Quote:

....and so terrible was his face, lit by the lightning that flickered all about them.....
There! Hopefully that makes it harder than any other variation on the same episode.

Firefoot 04-02-2004 02:50 PM

It was at the death of Beleg, about Túrin just after he realized what he had done.

So are these quotes that someone said or just quotes from the books?

Luthien_ Tinuviel 04-02-2004 03:13 PM

Indeed it is.

As far as I can tell from Phervasaion's introduction, they just have to come from a death or funeral scene from the books, is all. And so far we seem to really like the Silmarillion. :p

Firefoot 04-02-2004 03:27 PM

Must be because everybody dies in the Sil. ;) Seriously, that was my first impression of the book - "everybody dies!" Anyway:

...I must leave it now. Farewell!

Thorin on his death bed to Bilbo.

Here goes:
Quote:

as a pale shrouded figure it loomed over the Hill.

symestreem 04-03-2004 09:02 AM

It's Saruman's "death" scene, in Return of the King 'The Scouring of the Shire'.

Quote:

To the dismay of those that stood by, about the body of Saruman a grey mist gathered, and rising slowly to a great height like smoke from a fire, as a pale shrouded figure it loomed over the hill.

Evisse the Blue 04-04-2004 04:03 AM

Correct, symestreem!

symestreem 04-05-2004 05:24 PM

My body is broken.

Mad Baggins 04-05-2004 05:38 PM

Was it Theoden, when poor Snowmane fell on him in Return of the King?

symestreem 04-09-2004 06:50 AM

Indeed it is.

Mad Baggins 04-09-2004 11:16 AM

Thanks.

The Elf-sheen passes

As if anyone should need a hint for that beautiful scene. It's Morwen Eledhwen to her husband Húrin.

Quote:

'You come at last,' she said. 'I have waited too long.'
'It was a dark road. I have come as I could,' he answered.
'But you are too late,' said Morwen. 'They are lost.'
'I know it,' he said. 'But you are not.'
But Morwen said: 'Almost. I am spent. I shall go with the sun. Now little time is left: if you know, tell me! How did she find him?'
But Húrin did not answer, and they sat beside the stone, and did not speak again; and when the sun went down Morwen sighed and clasped his hand, and was still; and Húrin knew that she had died.

Evisse the Blue 07-01-2004 08:33 AM

Correct of course!

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 07-01-2004 12:48 PM

Contextualise this:
Quote:

I go now to my long rest

Mariska Greenleaf 07-07-2004 07:36 AM

That would be Finrod Felagund, wounded to death, talking to Beren:

Quote:

I go now to my long rest in the timeless halls beyond the Seas and the Mountains of Aman.

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 07-20-2004 09:25 AM

It certainly would.

Phervasaion 08-12-2004 01:29 PM

okay, Mariska's had well over the time limit to reply so i may aswell put a quote up...

Quote:

They buried him in a mound of stones beside the pass; and green turf came there, and yellow flowers bloomed upon it amid the barranness of the stone, until the world was changed

Firefoot 08-12-2004 01:44 PM

That was at Glorfindel's death in the Cirith Thoronath.

Phervasaion 08-12-2004 02:13 PM

Right you are! Your turn firefoot.

Firefoot 10-03-2004 08:06 PM
