Before and After

Anybody who's seen Wheel of Fortune will be familiar with the category where they take two phrases and run them together, for example: "Coffee Break A Leg" from "coffee break" and "break a leg".

This is the ME version! The asker will hint at the phrases and then it will be up to you to come up with the combined Phrase. Here's a rather silly example for you to see how it works:

Q: Mirkwood, ancestral home of the Took family.

A: Greenwood the Great Smials

Okay, here's the first question:

It took Oin to Cuivienen.

Good luck!

Sophia

*Note* Phrim helped me very much with this game *bows to Phrim*. I came up with the idea, and the clue to the answer of the first question... but the clever phrase that results is entirely his. *Round of Applause* Muchas Gracias.

Well, after a little help I've got:

Watcher in the Waters of Awakening.

As the Watcher in the water killed Oin, the Waters of Awakening is what Cuivienen is.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 07-07-2003 03:26 PM

*nods* Very good!

Now make the next one...

Eep, yes ma'm.

A melty place that was fortold by Mandos.

Anardil 07-07-2003 10:13 PM

Mount Doom of Mandos?

Beren87 07-07-2003 10:55 PM

Well, I was going for "Mount Doom of the Noldor", but I'll give it to you.

Anardil 07-14-2003 08:50 PM

Sorry for the delay. Some major event had driven it out of mind. I must be related to Ol' Barliman. Anyhow, here we go.

Thorin Oakenshield's heart swore an oath to Isildur here, but later broke it.

alaklondewen 07-14-2003 08:52 PM

Is it the Arkenstone of Erech?

Anardil 07-14-2003 09:30 PM

Correct.

Sophia the Thunder Mistress 07-22-2003 01:20 PM

*bump* Your go Alak.

alaklondewen 07-23-2003 06:11 PM

Thank you.

The successor of Morgoth and Hador.

Beren87 07-26-2003 01:49 PM

Hm..I've got "Sauron" and the "Easterlings", but they're not going together in any way I can see. Hador died, and when Morgoth overtook his kingdom, he gave it to the Easterlings..

Gwaihir the Windlord 07-27-2003 02:44 AM

Er, Sauron the Black Easterling perhaps then? The 'Black Easterling', of course, was Khamul, a Ringwraith.

The Saucepan Man 07-27-2003 07:51 PM

The Dark Lord of Dor-Lomin?

the phantom 07-28-2003 01:48 PM

Sophia's going to kill you, Saucepan. She figured it out while she was in Indy but she didn't have a chance to get to a computer.

alaklondewen 07-28-2003 09:24 PM

Yes, Saucepan is correct. The board is now yours.

The Saucepan Man 07-29-2003 06:59 AM

Thanks, alak.

Oops, not a good idea to get on the wrong side of a Thunder Mistress. So, without further ado, a clue:

An equine obstacle to the Dark Land.

Novlamothien 07-29-2003 02:02 PM

Is it Rohan?

Turambar 07-29-2003 02:13 PM

Asfaloth Lorien?

The Saucepan Man 07-30-2003 08:04 AM

No, not Rohan. You need to bring together two different Tolkien-related concepts, the clues to each of which are in the question. Er, difficult to explain, but its best to look at the earlier questions for examples of what's involved.

Asfaloth Lorien
I'm not sure that Galadriel would appreciate her realm being referred to as the Dark Land though, Turambar. No, that's not it - but you're on the right track.

Turambar 07-30-2003 08:57 AM

I didn't think that was right, but maybe Lothlorien could be an "obstacle" to the Black Land . . .

Back to the drawing board. Equine obstacle . . equine obstacle . . .

Arod Lithui ?

[ July 30, 2003: Message edited by: Turambar ]

peonydeepdelver 07-30-2003 09:08 AM

Um, Hasufel to the Black Gate?

The Saucepan Man 07-30-2003 06:22 PM

Nope, neither of those, although Arod Lithui is closer than you might think.

Turambar 07-31-2003 06:38 AM

Arod Engrin or Arod Gorgoroth?

The Saucepan Man 07-31-2003 06:03 PM

Arod is not in the answer. Think of another horse.

Turambar 07-31-2003 07:07 PM

Roheryn Lasgalen ??

Same problem as Asfaloth Lorien probably.

The Saucepan Man 08-01-2003 05:39 AM

No. The horse in question is just about the most famous one you can think of.

the phantom 08-01-2003 06:51 AM

Mountains of Shadowfax?

The Saucepan Man 08-01-2003 06:56 AM

That's the one, phantom. Please proceed.

Thanks

A building dedicated to Hador.

Iarwain 08-01-2003 05:29 PM

the House of Hador, perhaps?

the phantom 08-01-2003 07:27 PM

Quote:

the House of Hador
It's not quite that easy.

The Saucepan Man 08-01-2003 07:50 PM

How about Lorindol Guldur?

the phantom 08-01-2003 08:37 PM

Quote:

Lorindol Guldur
It's not quite that hard.

Turambar 08-02-2003 12:36 PM

Golden Head Quarters ?

the phantom 08-02-2003 04:24 PM

Quote:

Golden Head Quarters
More Tolkienish than that.

the phantom 08-04-2003 11:19 PM

Well, I guess a hint is in order.

Turambar, you were right to include "golden" in your guess.

Gwaihir the Windlord 08-05-2003 12:57 AM

The Golden House of Hador

the phantom 08-05-2003 07:43 AM

I'm looking for a specific building.

(in other words, it has a name)
