I was just playing with the AltaVista babel fish and I had an idea. If youve ever used the babel fish (or any other online translator, probably) you've probably noticed that they they onl have one word in each language to translate a given word into. I don't know if that is a very good explanation, so I have an example. After starting in English then going to French then German I got:
Quote:
All rested noiseless during one point in time, to long at the jet of Boromir. " it is so-called a small thing, you, this Gollum? Small, but largely in the stupidity. What is it that it occurred from it? Which unfortunate fate at you place?"

I started with:
Quote:
All sat silent for a while, until at lengh Boromir spoke. "He is a small thing, you say, this Gollu? Small, but great in mischief. What became of him? To what doom did you put him?

A couple helpfull links: http://babelfish.altavista.digital.com/babelfish.altavista.digital.com/ The babel fish, which is the one that I used to make these translations. And http://www.tranexp.com:2000/InterTranwww.tranexp.com:2000/InterTran which has more languages for more combinations.

I'll start us off, who is this talking about?
Quote:
Its sword was long, its lance was lively,/its shining bar was seen far;/the innumerable asterisks of the zone of the sky/were against-reflected in its silvered sign.

English to French to German to English.

Very good! Would you like to have at it? I was just playing around with the InterTran one, seeing what would happen as I went through more and more languages, and I would like to suggest that you limit yourself to 4 total languages, at most 5, including English.

Who said this now-grarbled passage...

O! The Candy is the clay of the rain falling and the brook which jumps of the hills on the level; but if improve to rain, or splashing stream is the hot water which smokes and absorbs.

This went English>German>French>English

Re: An idea for a game

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain,
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is water hot that smokes and steams.

(from the bath song from Crickhollow)

Not too hard, fun.
Here's another...

Quote:
"But just while it has fallen has oscillated the relative whip and the thongs they have knee frustrated and offered approximately of the wizard, dragging you the edge. It has wavered and it fallen, seized vainly you the stone and fact you slide in the abyss. "Pilot it you swindled! " cried and it has been gone."

This went Engl.>Ital.>Engl.>Port.>Engl. (then I cleaned out some Italian that had remained).

Swagger it, Swagger it, my little galpsi-o-whoop!

I'm surprised anyone got that. Wow. Of course, it is in the random quotes shown at the top of the page. But still, I'm reasonably sure it wasn't showing when you saw the garbled version.

Anyways, your turn, non-Ranger.

I wish I had time to sleep for beauty alone...

Anyway, what is behind:

"Its mother country is distant and of the small value they are confusions this country for them nevertheless that was not its own intention that in-romped to him in her, therefore and requires I you not them debts due to the paper, who played to him - I doubt a valiant one, not to him."

For extra confusion, I started it from the German version, from there it went >English>German>English>Spanish>Eng lish. Not very exotical, but I wanted to understand the steps inbetween.
