"minor works" quotes

I'm strating new thread where JRRT's "minor works" (i.e. Leaf by Niggle, Farmer Giles of Ham, Smith of Wotton... etc) (not directly connected with ME) will be quoted.
Let's get rolling:

Who said and to whom:

Quote:

"And the wind has blown half the tiles on my roof, and water is pouring into the bedroom. I think I ought to get the doctor. And the builders, too, only they take so long to come. I was wondering if you had any wood and canvas you could spare, just to patch me up and see me through for a day or two."
A story must be told or there'll be no story, yet it is the untold stories that are most moving

edit:

Here's the list of works currently used in this thread:

Farmer Giles of Ham
The Adventures of Tom Bombadil
Leaf by Niggle
Smith of Wootton Major
On Fairy Stories
Mythopoeia
The Homecoming of Beorhtnoth Beorhthelm's Son
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Father Christmas Letters
The Monsters and the Critics
Roverandom
The Lay of Aotrou and Itroun
A Secret Vice
Mr. Bliss

enjoy

Re: &quot;minor works&quot; quotes

Good for you. Little things need attention, too. This is from &quot;Leaf by Niggle,&quot; which I just read over Christmas, and it's Niggle's neighbor talking to Niggle. (I don't remember the neighbor's name, but, shh, don't tell anyone.) <img src=wink.gif ALT=";)">

Oh, this is one of the Voices talking about Niggle in &quot;Leaf by Niggle,&quot; when he was being judged or whatever! I don't remember which Voice.

Well, since interest was shown lately of aforesaid "minor works", plunge in, folks :)

Estelyn Telcontar 09-26-2002 07:49 AM

HI, your last quote was from 'Farmer Giles of Ham' - speaker is the giant, after being shot by Giles' blunderbuss.

HerenIstarion 09-27-2002 07:08 AM

aye, correct :)

Estelyn Telcontar 09-27-2002 07:19 AM

OK, next quote:
Quote:

I grant you your wish. Farewell! Now go to sleep!
Who says it to whom?

HerenIstarion 09-28-2002 01:46 AM

that's Alf (King of Faery) to Noakes, when the latter wished to be thin again :)

Estelyn Telcontar 09-28-2002 02:07 AM

Right you are, HI - though it is 'Nokes'. Your turn!

HerenIstarion 09-28-2002 02:52 AM

ai, ai shame on me :)

next serve:

Quote:

That would be a help; and it need not be very fine. It
would be for business and not for showing off' at court

Estelyn Telcontar 09-28-2002 03:04 AM

At first I thought it would be Farmer Giles, but it was the miller, speaking to him.

HerenIstarion 09-28-2002 03:48 AM

exactly. BTW, I somehow figured all the millers with Tolkien are nasty. And I think I know why. I'll post a thread in the books upon the subject. Meanwhile, you serve now :)

edit: Nasty Millers

Estelyn Telcontar 09-28-2002 04:06 AM

OK, here's a new one:
Quote:

I don't remember what I said, but anyway it was not nearly enough.

Estelyn Telcontar 09-30-2002 07:38 AM

Looks like there are only two of us playing on this thread - anyone else who's read the "minor works" and wants to join us??

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 10-01-2002 02:00 PM

I am pleased to answer the call for more players.

The last quotation was Niggle to Parish, who was looking at a flower I seem to remember.

That was the old troll, speaking to Perry-the-Winkle in the 'Adventures of Tom Bombadil'. And yes, Parish was looking at a flower - a small, shapely yellow one. Could it have been elanor?

The Squatter of Amon Rûdh 10-01-2002 02:48 PM

Correct. Go to the top of the class

Estelyn Telcontar 10-01-2002 02:56 PM

The honour would be greater if the class were bigger! Try your hand at this one:

Giles to the miller.

Estelyn Telcontar 10-01-2002 03:28 PM

Correct, Legalos - your turn!! And welcome to the thread!

Legolas 10-01-2002 04:12 PM

"Don't do me a harm!"

Estelyn Telcontar 10-02-2002 02:33 PM

Nokes says it to the King of Faery in 'Smith of Wootton Major'.

Legolas 10-02-2002 02:38 PM

Yep.

Estelyn Telcontar 10-03-2002 05:45 AM

"I had matters of my own to mind, and had wasted time enough on your errands."

HerenIstarion 10-04-2002 01:50 AM

that's Giles to the King at their famous meeting at the Ham Bridge. It goes on even more boldly with "Give us your crown" motto :D

Estelyn Telcontar 10-04-2002 04:33 AM

Yes indeed, HI - your turn!

HerenIstarion 10-05-2002 04:34 AM

Quote:

The point is, what can I do for you?

Estelyn Telcontar 10-06-2002 02:38 PM

HI, I looked through the four "minor works" I have ( Giles, T. Bombadil, Niggle and Smith) several times without finding that quote. Can you give a clue?

HerenIstarion 10-06-2002 11:30 PM

it's in a story written in twenties, but published only recently. I hope this helps :)

Estelyn Telcontar 10-07-2002 01:41 AM

That must be 'Roverandom' then, which I don't have at home, but will try to get from the library - am I right?

HerenIstarion 10-07-2002 07:59 AM

Well, you are. That is wizard Psamathos to Rover. I count your guess as a correct answer and invite you to proceed :)
