First Age Trivia

Let's try to follow the standard trivia rules on this thread and keep it in the First Age.

When Glaurung first came forth from Angband, who fought with him?

Lindolirian 06-15-2002 10:37 AM

If you mean who fought against him, it was the dwarves of the Blue Mountains.
If you mean who fought alongside him, i believe it was Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs...

Legolas 06-15-2002 03:17 PM

Actually, Azaghal and the dwarves of Belegost came later.

I'm asking who fought against him - sorry for the confusion.

Lómelindi 06-15-2002 07:28 PM

I think it was Fingon who first fought Glaurung.

Legolas 06-16-2002 02:12 PM

Yes indeed. Fingon and his men.

You may ask.

Lómelindi 06-16-2002 05:27 PM

Whose armies defeated Morgoth's Orcs in the Glorious Battle?

[ June 16, 2002: Message edited by: Lómelindi ]

Lindolirian 06-16-2002 08:59 PM

The armies of the Noldor under Fingolfin and Maedrhos were victorious in the Dagor Aglareb.

Lómelindi 06-16-2002 10:06 PM

Correct. Your turn.

Lindolirian 06-17-2002 12:35 PM

How many years did Gondolin stand? (from completion to destruction)

Legolas 06-17-2002 08:04 PM

384

Lindolirian 06-17-2002 09:07 PM

Legolas... you are correct.

Legolas 06-17-2002 10:53 PM

Who was the mentor of Telchar?

Lindolirian 06-18-2002 11:44 AM

Gamil Zirak.

Legolas 06-18-2002 03:04 PM

Proceed, sir.

Lindolirian 06-19-2002 01:02 PM

Who was killed in the exact same way and place of his father?

Mat_Heathertoes 06-19-2002 03:29 PM

Maeglin, who was cast from the walls of Gondolin onto the Caragdûr like Eöl, his father.

Lindolirian 06-19-2002 09:09 PM

Once again, you got it.

Mat_Heathertoes 06-20-2002 04:39 PM

Heh, we lock horns again Lindolirian.

Here's a nasty tricksy one.

How many maiar following Melkor have names in the Silmarillion and who are they ?

Legolas 06-20-2002 07:25 PM

What do you mean by "following Melkor"?

The Maiar mentioned are Ilmare, Eonwe, Osse, Uinen, Melian, Olorin (Gandalf/Mithrandir), Sauron (Gorthaur the Cruel), Arien, Tilion, Curunir, Radagast, "and others of the Istari who went into the east of Middle-earth, and do not come into these tales."

There they are, in order. 13, if you count the indirectly named Alatar and Pallando.

Also, you might've wanted "the Valaraukar, the scourges of fire that in Middle-earth were called the Balrogs, demons of terror" included.

Joy 06-20-2002 07:47 PM

Well, for one Sauron, and also the Valaraukar. It is mentioned that Ossë followed Melkor for a time, but repented and served Ulmo once more.

Daniel Telcontar 06-21-2002 07:01 AM

Isn't the answer just Sauron and Gothmog?

Mat_Heathertoes 06-23-2002 09:56 AM

Correct. The key word is following, ie continuing to serve and not followed, served for a period of time.

Ungoliant did serve Melkor once but had disowned him to be her own mistress. It could be argued that Thuringwethil may be included as it specifically mentions that she was 'wont to fly in vampires form', indicating that she took the form of a vampire bat voluntarily.

Daniel Telcontar 06-26-2002 04:09 AM

If I am correct, then I will proceed. I will also proceed if I am not correct, so who cares.

Question: Who did Finrod love, and what kind was she from?

Ruthwen 06-26-2002 05:03 AM

I believe he loved Amarie the Vanya.

Daniel Telcontar 06-26-2002 05:11 AM

You are correct. Please feel free to proceed.

Ruthwen 06-26-2002 05:14 AM

Okay, this one's easy because I'm too lazy to think of a harder one.

What secret name does Aredhel give to Maeglin?

Daniel Telcontar 06-26-2002 05:19 AM

Lomion, a Quenya word meaning child of twilight or something like that.

Ruthwen 06-26-2002 05:21 AM

You are correct.

Daniel Telcontar 06-26-2002 05:43 AM

Then I will proceed.

Who was the only in Feanor's army to speak against the burning of the white ships?

Turambar 06-26-2002 12:38 PM

Fingon ?

Daniel Telcontar 06-26-2002 12:40 PM

Close guess, but Fingon was not in Feanor's army, but his father's, Fingolfin's. It was someone close to Fingon, though.

akhtene 06-26-2002 08:44 PM

Was it Maedhros, the friend of Fingon?

Daniel Telcontar 06-27-2002 05:09 AM

Yes, it was. Meadhros and Fingon was close friends, and Meadhros did not approve of Feänor burning the ships at Losgar.

akhtene 06-28-2002 03:46 PM

Who of Men were ever allowed to enter Gondolin?

Daniel Telcontar 06-28-2002 05:01 PM

Huor, Hurin and Tuor were the only men ever to enter Gondolin, I believe.

akhtene 06-28-2002 06:28 PM

Yes, that seems right to me.

Daniel Telcontar 06-29-2002 04:55 AM

What was the name of Turgon's wife, who died on the Helcaraxë?

Ruthwen 06-29-2002 06:30 AM

It was Elenwe.

Daniel Telcontar 06-29-2002 01:29 PM

Correct.

Ruthwen 06-30-2002 10:33 AM

What did the people of Middle-earth call Vingilot when it first set sail in the heavens, and what did that name mean?
