Eorl is Eomer's great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great, great grandfather!

Nirvana II 03-04-2004 06:17 PM

not quite....almost there

luthien-elvenprincess 03-04-2004 08:32 PM

Hummm...I count Eomer as the 18th generation from Eorl. That would make Eorl the great (times 15) grandpappy of Eomer.

Would you give a hint as to the relationship you are looking for in your answer?

symestreem 03-04-2004 09:14 PM

Eorl->Brego->Aldor->Frea->Freawine
->Goldwine->Deor->Gram->Helm's sister (Hild?)->Frealaf->Brytta/Leofa->Walda
->Folca->Folcwine->Fengel->Thengel
->Theodwyn->Eomer

That makes Eomer the sixteenth generation after Eorl.

luthien-elvenprincess 03-05-2004 07:13 AM

Oops, I said Eomer was 18 generations after Eorl. I should have said that 18 generations were represented counting these two.
Eomer was actually 17 generations from Eorl, not 16 as you said.

Since, Eomer is the 17th after Eorl; Eorl would be Eomer's 15xgreat grandfather.

Nirvana II 03-05-2004 09:53 AM

not yet

hint:Eomer wasnt in Eorl's right line

symestreem 03-05-2004 02:41 PM

Eomer was a direct descendant of Eorl, just not always through the male line.

Nirvana II 03-05-2004 02:51 PM

nope

luthien-elvenprincess 03-05-2004 07:34 PM

Well... when the Second and Third Lines of the Kings of the Mark began, they began with the nephew of the prior king. However, their mothers were sisters of the prior king, daughters of the king before that. So, they were in the direct line descending from Eorl.
Or, do you have different information? Or, are you thinking of something else entirely?

Nirvana II 03-06-2004 06:45 PM

i have different information

The Saucepan Man 03-07-2004 05:56 PM

Where is this going?

I find it hard to fault symestreem's analysis:

Quote:

Eorl->Brego->Aldor->Frea->Freawine
->Goldwine->Deor->Gram->Helm's sister (Hild?)->Frealaf->Brytta/Leofa->Walda
->Folca->Folcwine->Fengel->Thengel
->Theodwyn->Eomer

That makes Eomer the sixteenth generation after Eorl.
and

Quote:

Eomer was a direct descendant of Eorl, just not always through the male line.
Which means that luthien-elvenprincess's original answer is surely correct:

Quote:

Eorl would be Eomer's great (x15)-grandpa.
I am not sure where you are going with this one, Nirvana II, but it seems to me that luthien-elvenprincess has it. If you disagree, I think that, in the circumstances, you ought perhaps to explain why.

Nirvana II 03-08-2004 10:01 AM

Saucepan Man,my good fellow, she isnt correct one one reason.........Eomer is Eorl's 15x great nephew!not grandson !i will give luthien the go.....

NightKnight 03-08-2004 10:55 AM

Nirvana, you are wrong. Eomer's mother, Theodwyn, was the daughter of king Thengel.

luthien-elvenprincess 03-08-2004 02:47 PM

Yeah...(victory dance):D
I don't mean to belabor the point...but I still count Eomer as the 17th generation after Eorl. (moves gracefully on);)

What is Gloredhel to Rian?

NightKnight 03-08-2004 03:03 PM

Gloredhel was Rian's husband's aunt.

luthien-elvenprincess 03-08-2004 07:44 PM

yes, yes, yes, NightKnight.

NightKnight 03-09-2004 08:32 AM

What was Elwë to Elrond, in both ways please! :D

Miriel 03-09-2004 11:26 AM

*groans*
Um ... great great grandfather, and ... great great great uncle?

NightKnight 03-10-2004 01:39 AM

I just realized I thought of the wrong person. *Hits self* That should have been Elladan/Elrohir/Arwen, and not Elrond. *Hits self again* Well, since they are only related in one way, and you got it, I'll give it to you. *Smacks self really hard*

Miriel 03-11-2004 12:44 PM

Be calm, NightKnight, I'm sure we'll forgive you. :)
(yeah right...)
Anyway, name Gil-galad's (male) cousin's father's wife's brother's father's half-brother's wife's father.
And I hope you have as much fun working it out as I did making it up. *innocent smile*

NightKnight 03-11-2004 01:46 PM

And that would be Mahtan. ;) Tricksy one there. ;)

Miriel 03-12-2004 02:18 PM

*grins*
Well done, Nightknight, correct. :D

NightKnight 03-13-2004 06:00 AM

It was actually fun. :D

So, who was Agarwaen's "stepfather"'s brother's daughter's husband?

Firefoot 03-13-2004 07:48 AM

Finarfin?

NightKnight 03-13-2004 08:35 AM

Correct. :)

Firefoot 03-13-2004 10:07 AM

Thanks NightKnight

Maybe something a little bit easier. :)

Túrin and Brandir.

The Perky Ent 03-13-2004 10:13 AM

Brandir's great uncle is Turin's Grandfather...so um...third cousins? If not, then i'm stickin with Brandir's great uncle is Turin's Grandfather!

NightKnight 03-13-2004 10:25 AM

They were second cousins.

Firefoot 03-13-2004 10:28 AM

Umm, I was looking for second cousins, but that is the same thing as Perky Ent's "Brandir's great uncle is Turin's Grandfather!" So whoever posts the next question first can carry on.

The Perky Ent 03-13-2004 10:31 AM

Gimli and Dain

Firefoot 03-13-2004 10:39 AM

There were two Dáins. If you mean Dáin I then he is Gimli's great-great-great-uncle. If you mean Dáin II Ironfoot then they are 3rd cousins once removed.

The Perky Ent 03-13-2004 10:53 AM

You're right, but only if you tell me what once removed means!

Firefoot 03-13-2004 06:52 PM

It has to do with generations. So Glóin and Dáin are third cousins, and Gimli being Glóin's son is once removed.

The Perky Ent 03-13-2004 06:57 PM

um...sure! Your turn!

Firefoot 03-13-2004 07:09 PM

Lotho Sackville-Baggins and Frodo.

Fingolfin II 03-13-2004 10:48 PM

First Cousins?

Thorongil 03-14-2004 04:45 AM

Third cousins?

Firefoot 03-14-2004 06:31 AM

Thorongil has it.

NightKnight 03-21-2004 10:01 AM

*Bumps to the top*
Thorongil?

Thorongil 03-22-2004 01:56 AM

Oh,sorry. I forgot this thread. I can't make a new one right now, but I'll post another in 8-9 hours.
