Eowyn_Wildfire 12-22-2003 01:06 PM

i think I might know the drinking song

Rose Cotton 12-22-2003 01:22 PM

I'd really like to know the Drinking song they sing in Rohan.

dragoneyes 12-22-2003 01:39 PM

Hey ho to the bottle I go,<BR>to heal my heart and drown my woe,<BR>rain may fall and wind may blow,<BR>though there still be many miles to go.<P>Sweet is the sound of the falling the rain,<BR>and the stream that runs fro hill to plain,<BR>but better than rain or rippling brook:<BR>is a mug of beer inside this Took!<P>Is that the drinking song you meant?<P>The one Pippin sings on the soundtrack is:<P>Home is behind,<BR>The whole world ahead,<BR>And there are many paths to tread.<BR>Through shadow,<BR>To the edge of night,<BR>Until the stars are all alight.<BR>Mist and shadow,<BR>Cloud and shade.<BR>Home shall fade,<BR>All shall…<BR>Fade.<P>That's what I heard anyhow. Is this what you were asking for?

Eowyn_Wildfire 12-22-2003 01:46 PM

yeah thankx dragoneyes thoes are the two I ment!

Nimrothiel 12-22-2003 06:18 PM

Hmmm...I just heard "the world ahead," but you're probably right. I can't remember all of the words to the drinking song in Rohan; which really bugs me. <P>"...You can keep your *something* ales,<BR>and your fancy flagons.<BR>But the only brew for the brave and true...<BR>Comes from that Green Dragon!" *clink*<P>That's all I can remember, and it's not much.

Rose Cotton 12-22-2003 09:10 PM

I guess I'll just have to go see the movie 10 more times so I can learn the song.<P>Movie person: What are you doing with that tape recorder?<P>Me: I just want to learn this song. Honest.<P>MP: Ya. Well, I'm going to have to take that from you.<P>Me: Wait! I need that!!

Eowyn_Wildfire 12-22-2003 11:21 PM

yeah I was thinking of bring a pen and paper but i thought better!

Eowyn_Wildfire 12-22-2003 11:38 PM

I looked around for pippins song and found versions with different last lines the most comman one I could find was <P>Home is behind the world ahead<BR>And there are many paths to tread<BR>Through shadow<BR>To the edge of night<BR>Until the stars are all alight<P>Mist and shadow<BR>Cloud and shade<BR>Hope shall fail<BR>All shall fade.

Eowyn_Wildfire 12-22-2003 11:47 PM

for those who have the soundtrack is the world ahead on it (AKA Pippin's song)

Sirithrodwen 12-23-2003 08:14 PM

The song that Pip sings is a song from Fellowship of the Ring. It has 3 verses but Pippin only sings the last one. The words were rearranged a little bit, but here is the one from the book:<P>Home is behind, the world ahead,<BR>And there are many paths to tread<BR>Through shadows to the edge of night,<BR>Until the stars are all alight.<BR>Then world behind and home ahead,<BR>We'll wander back to home and bed.<BR>Mist and twilight, cloud and shade!<BR>Away shall fade! Away shall fade!<BR>Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,<BR>And then to bed! And then to bed!

HCIsland 12-23-2003 08:25 PM

The song that Merry and Pippin sing in King at Edoras is not the same one they sing in the Extended Fellowship.<P>I remember the line, "they brew a beer so brown," and something about the Green Dragon.<P>Part of it may be the opening verse from the song Frodo sings in the book at the Prancing Pony.<P><I>There is an inn, a merry old inn<BR>beneath an old grey hill,<BR>And there they brew a beer so brown<BR>That the Man in the Moon himself came down<BR>one night to drink his fill.</I><P>Of course, it seems they modified this song significantly.<P>Editted to add: Oops, sorry Nimrothiel, I just noticed your post. You certainly got more of it than I did.<P>H.C.<p>[ 9:41 PM December 23, 2003: Message edited by: HCIsland ]

Okay, the words to "The Edge Of Night," which Pippin sings in Return of the King, are in the soundtrack:<P>Home is behind.<BR>The world ahead.<BR>And there are many paths to tread<BR>Thru shadow to the edge of night<BR>Until the stars are all alight<BR>Mist and shadows, cloud and shade.<BR>All shall fade.<BR>All shall fade.<P>Most of you guys almost had it right

<BLOCKQUOTE>quote:<HR> ...You can keep your *something* ales,<HR></BLOCKQUOTE><P>I heard "Pansy" ales.

Elennar Starfire 01-09-2004 06:39 PM

What I heard was:<P><I>You can drink your fancy ales,<BR>drink 'em by the flagon,<BR>but the only brew for the brave and true<BR>comes from that Green Dragon!</I>

The Ninth Spelunker 01-10-2004 06:22 PM

this web site has the script <A HREF="http://www.legomirk.com/lotrscript2003/table_of_content.html" TARGET=_blank>http://www.legomirk.com/lotrscript2003/table_of_content.html</A> and it says the song is Oh you can search far and wide, you can drink the whole town dry, but you'll never find a beer<BR>so brown as the one we drink in our home town! You can keep your fancy ales, you can drink them by the flagon,<BR>but the only brew for the brave and true, comes from the Green Dragon

Thorongil 01-14-2004 04:47 AM

The drinking song that dragoneyes mentioned is the one they sang at the Green Dragon in FotR EE. I liked that song.

Arwen Evenstar 02-09-2004 04:49 PM

I agree with Catlyn21 on Pippin`s song. I`m almost positive that`s what he says.<P><I>Home is behind,<BR>The world ahead.<BR>And there are many paths to tread.<BR>Through shadow to the edge of night.<BR>Until the stars are all alight.<BR>Mist and shadow,<BR>Cloud and shade.<BR>All shall fade.<BR>All shall...<BR>Fade</I><P>And on the one Merry and Pip sing in Rotk I agree with The Ninth Spelunker.

ninlaith 07-13-2004 11:22 AM

I know all these are already in there but I thought I'd make a contribution

The Drinking song/ half of the Bath Song

Hey ho to the bottle I go,
To heal my heart and drown my woe,
Rain may fall and wind may blow,
But there's still to be many miles to go

Oh sweet is the sound of the pourin' rain,
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain,
but better than rain or ripplin' brook,
Is a mug of beer inside this Took!

The Bath Song

Sing hey! for the bath at the close of day
that washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he who will not sing
O! Water Hot is a noble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain,
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be gald indeed;
but beer is better if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did a fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

the Green Dragon

Oh you can search far and wide,
you can drink the whole town dry,
you'll never find a beer so brown,
But you'll never find a beer so brown
As the one we're drinking in our town,
you can drink your fancy ales!
you can drink them by the flagon!
But the only brew for the brave and true....
Comes from the Green Dragon!

I'm still not sure of the iambic pentameter of some of them but that's the least I can do. Thank you if you took the time to read them.

Pippin Pondlily 07-23-2004 03:24 PM

Here's the exact version from the movie of the drinking song:

A Drinking Song (ROTK)

Oh, you can search far and wide
You can drink the whole town dry
But you'll never find a beer so brown
(Line sung in round by Merry & Pippin)
As the one we drink in our hometown

You can drink your fancy ales
You can drink 'em by the flagon
But the only brew for the brave and true
Comes from the Green Dragon!

And this one my sister had written just below it so I'll just drop it here as well, though it's the same one everyone's putting in <BR> format--confuses me ;) :

Pippin's Song

Home is behind The world ahead
And there are many paths to tread

Through shadow To the edge of night
Until the stars are all alight

Mist and shadow Cloud and shade
All shall fade All shall ... fade ...

Pippin Pondlily your sister was correct with the song lyrics to Pippin's song, I know this because I listen to the song four times a day!

Ninlaith your lyrics were correct also, I looked them up with you because I know you well my dear friend.
