NightKnight: Close but no cigar. You missed out a generation.
Hint: The great-great-great-granddaughter is Arwen

NightKnight 02-22-2004 01:21 PM

Then it would be Celeborn and Galathil.

nobody 02-22-2004 01:47 PM

Yes correct.

NightKnight 02-22-2004 02:10 PM

In what way are Pippin and Bandobras Bullroarer related?

symestreem 02-22-2004 03:26 PM

Bullroarer was Pippin's great-great-great-great-uncle on his father's side, and on his mother's side... j/k.

NightKnight 02-22-2004 04:02 PM

Close.

Firefoot 02-22-2004 05:26 PM

Bullroarer was Pippin's great-great-great-great-great-uncle.

NightKnight 02-22-2004 06:03 PM

That's it. ;)

Firefoot 02-22-2004 09:13 PM

On her mother's side, how is Arwen related to Gil-Galad?

NightKnight 02-23-2004 05:56 AM

He was her grandmother's cousin's son.

Firefoot 02-23-2004 06:47 AM

Yes, go on NightKnight.

NightKnight 02-23-2004 09:48 AM

What was Bregolas to Arwen?

luthien-elvenprincess 02-23-2004 08:06 PM

Bregolas was Arwen's great-great-great-great grandfather.

NightKnight 02-24-2004 04:33 AM

Correct. Your turn. :)

luthien-elvenprincess 02-24-2004 05:59 PM

What relation were Elwing and Celebrian?

Arvedui III 02-24-2004 06:20 PM

Elwing is Celebrian's mother-in-law.

luthien-elvenprincess 02-24-2004 09:40 PM

Well...yes, that is correct. But, I was actually thinking of another relationship between the two.

NightKnight 02-25-2004 03:26 AM

Elwing was Celebrian's cousin's daughter.

luthien-elvenprincess 02-25-2004 05:40 AM

You are on the right track in thinking about the 'cousin' relationship. Specifically, I was thinking about which generation of cousins that they were to each other...

symestreem 02-25-2004 07:03 PM

Elwing is Celebrian's first cousin, once removed. Celebrian is Elwing's mother's cousin.

NightKnight 02-26-2004 08:43 AM

I don't understand all those cousin thingys in English. Sorry. :(

luthien-elvenprincess 02-26-2004 07:04 PM

Ok, I'll give a big hint. Going back 3 generations from Celebrian and Elwing, you have the brothers Olwe and Elwe. Their children, Earwen and Luthien were first cousins. The children of Earwen and Luthien would be second cousins to each other...making the next generation ????? cousins to each other!
Quess:p

Thorongil 02-27-2004 02:21 AM

Third cousins?
But all that cousin stuff IS confusing. first, second and third cousins, once, twice removed, what's the point of it?

luthien-elvenprincess 02-27-2004 06:56 AM

THe point of it shows the relationship between people and generations.
For instance: Luthien and Earwen are first cousins; their children (Dior and Galadriel) would be second cousins to each other. But, Dior and Galadriel could also be called 'first cousin, once removed (cuz of generation)' from either Earwen or Luthien, as the case may be.
The term 'cousin' show the relationship and is used without the 'removed' adjective when the cousins are in the same generation. The term 'x-removed' is used to show the relationship between different generations.
Hope this helps!

Your turn, Thorongil.

Thorongil 02-27-2004 09:43 AM

Ok, I got it(i think)

What's the relationship between Celebrimbor & Maeglin?

NightKnight 02-27-2004 09:52 AM

I didn't know that. Thanks luthien. :)

For the question: Second cousins?

Firefoot 02-27-2004 06:09 PM

Half-second cousins? Because Feanor and Fingolfin were half brothers.

Thorongil 02-28-2004 03:55 AM

Yes Firefoot, but I'll accept NightKnight's answer, and he was first so it's all yours NightKnight.

NightKnight 02-28-2004 05:07 AM

Thanks Firefoot.

What was Barahir to Turin?

Firefoot 02-28-2004 06:51 AM

Barahir was Turin's great-great-uncle.

NightKnight 02-29-2004 04:53 AM

That's right. Your turn. :)

Firefoot 02-29-2004 12:58 PM

How were Gimli and Kili related?

Arvedui III 02-29-2004 01:12 PM

Gimli and Kili's great-great-grandfathers were brothers.

Firefoot 02-29-2004 01:34 PM

Yes, go ahead, Arvedui.

Arvedui III 02-29-2004 06:10 PM

Thanks. How are Luthien and Arwen related?

Nirvana II 02-29-2004 08:31 PM
