**RotK - Éomer (Karl Urban)**

Did you like Éomer's role and Urban's acting?

Eomer of the Rohirrim 12-17-2003 02:00 PM

Eomer had an extremely small role. No dialogue of note whatsoever. He did look ferocious in battle though.
Not even a mention of his new title 'King of Rohan' either.
[ 3:00 PM December 17, 2003: Message edited by: Eomer of the Rohirrim ]

I expect that to be fixed.

Karl Urban's portrayal of Eomer was one of the most satisfactory for me in the whole trilogy - he simply *was* Tolkien's Eomer. And he somehow conveyed the impression that he had horses in his blood, you got more sense of the Rohirrim's horse-based culture from him than from any of the other Rohan flok.
There was far too little of him in RotK. I do hope to see more of him in the EE.

Lily Bracegirdle 12-18-2003 06:28 PM

His role was too small for me to say much about him, but I did like his line about Merry quite a bit. It was one of the only real laughs I had in the movie. I'm sorry the Witch king scene was changed so that Eomer didn't find Eowyn "dead" on the battlefield. That would have been a great scene for him.
-Lily

Karl Urban showed himself to be an excellent actor in The Two Towers, capable of making the role much larger and more noticeable than the writers gave it credit for. I'm still miffed to say the very least about him going north for absolutely no reason while his people are being butchered at Helm's Deep. Just another send 'em away, bring 'em back Peter Jackson gag.
Anyway, I admit that the filmmakers had their hands full with a huge number of characters. It wasn't until I saw The Return of the King that I understood (although I still don't forgive) Imrahil's disappearance. There was very little time to deal with Éowyn, Faramir, Legolas or Gimli, and I'm happy to wait until the extended (i.e. real as opposed to condensed) edition.
But leaving out Éomer's ascendance, and his role as Aragorn's brother (not literally) in the future of Gondor and Rohan was criminal. It could have been accomplished with no more than two lines, at Aragorn's coronation. Éomer had even less emphasis placed on him than in the previous movie, and that seemed to be inconsistent to me. Surely his future is at least as important as seeing who Pippin is going to get married to?
Alas for Éomer, who will make a much better king than Bernard Hill did!

Finwe 12-19-2003 12:27 PM

I think Karl Urban was a wonderful Eomer. I went to see The Two Towers with an image of Eomer in my mind from when I read the books, and Karl Urban fit every single part of that description. He was a Horse-Lord to the core.

Eomer of the Rohirrim 12-19-2003 03:13 PM

Indeed doug, the complete absence of his relationship with Aragorn was pretty bad. The worst part about this version of RotK for Eomer, as has been pointed out, was that we couldn't see his dismay over the 'death' of Eowyn and subsequent rage up the hill where he would meet Aragorn. (I really could cry over the missing out of this scene.)
Of course, it was inevitable that certain characters would miss out and that Eomer would be one of them. A real pity.

Oroaranion 12-19-2003 03:36 PM

Eomer is one of the greatest characters brought to us by Tolkien. He deserved more than he got. But saying that, Jackson butchered the whole trilogy. Let us hope that he does not get his filthy paws on any other Middle Earth stories.
Mr Urban did a fantastic job of delivering the role he was given by the ****** writers. I salute him!

Daisy Brambleburr 12-19-2003 04:08 PM

Kar Urban was brilliant, but there was far too little of him! I'd have loved to have seen more, greif at Theodens death, relationship with Aragorn, and so on. But I love how he was portrayed in the films.

What's Christmas?

We were very moved. It was well worth it.

oh, too true that Eomer's role was too small He was one of my favorites and i wish they had been able to put more Eomer in both TTT and RotK. but maybe he'll be more in the EE!

Lost One 12-23-2003 07:09 AM

Karl Urban was indeed excellent. He looked and sounded perfect, and radiated the vigour, determination and loyalty of the book Eomer. He suffered because of the (probably necessary) plot simplifications. He missed Helm's Deep and the bonding with Aragorn because Gandalf couldn't just turn up with Erkenbrand ('Who?' going up in a thousand cinemas), and lost his scene with Theoden due to a presumed need to make the most of the few female characters in the film. I suspect that he will get a bit more in the EE - I have seen a snippet of him grieving on the battlefield, so there is clearly more to come.
(Given that he was cast because PJ wanted a Kiwi actor in a main part, it's a shame he had so little to do!)
[ 8:11 AM December 23, 2003: Message edited by: Lost One ]

Rider of Rohan 12-23-2003 12:52 PM

I was quite disappointed in his screen time. I think he had more in the trailor. It was pretty rude of PJ to show us that great image of him weeping on the battlefield and make us wait till the EE to see who he was weeping over. I hope there is a ton more of him in the EE. Urban made a great Eomer. He made a lasting impression for having such a small part. I think he was cut out because he overshadowed some of the other "main" characters.

Failivrin 12-23-2003 03:27 PM

well what can i say about Karl Urban? i really loved his portrayl of Eomer and quite frankly, i am aurprised that there aren't more Karl Urban girly fansites...
i counted his lines today! he has 11 in the whole movie but 3 of them are screams

Aredhel Ar-Feiniel 12-23-2003 04:03 PM

Well theres two here already, Everdawn and I. I have come across no others, shame really, Karl Urban i reckon could give Leggy a run for his money . But its no only his looks which make him great, its his acting, keep a look-out for him in The Bourne Supremacywith Matt Damon.

Eomer of the Rohirrim 12-24-2003 03:35 PM

"What's Christmas?" (and the conversation that this line started).
A prime example of sarcasm just not working over the internet.
Despite his lack of lines, Eomer does have one of the standout expressions of the trilogy. Just look at him during the charge of the Rohirrim. No-one looked scarier than that in the whole movie!

Failivrin 12-24-2003 03:39 PM

You're right; Karl Urban's screaming is terrifying.
All it needs is for us to write some letters to girly magazines and Karl Urban will be spashed across their sugary pages in weeks but actually...do we really want that to happen to him?

Everdawn 12-25-2003 01:13 AM

*jumps up and down* "I would!"... though you have a point, then he would turn into Orlando and we would be persecuted for being *gasps* "Tacky fangirls"
He does deserve more recognition as an actor though, most people who i mention his name to dont know who the hell im talking about.
BTW: Happy Christmas to you guys, Its christmas Day here in Australia and its too hot to do anything so we are all being lazy, I got a figure of Éomer, yay! Happy holiday season!

Arwen Imladris 12-26-2003 09:54 PM

Eomer was great, the only problem is that we didn't get to see enough of him! He was really scary with his scream, but it was hard to tell it was him because he had all of his armour on. His 'Merry's arms are too short' line was so funny, I'm glad they gave him that line, a bit of comic releif is always good, and it wasn't too out of wack like some of Gimli's lines are.

Daisy Brambleburr 12-28-2003 06:36 AM

I really liked the part when Eomer threw his spear at the Haradrim (sp) on the Mumakil. In a few seconds he had caught eye contact with the man, and it was as if he had a personal vendetta against him or something. You could tell that he really hated him, so when he was killed it made the moment more poignant and memorable. That was a good Eomer-moment, I thought, even if there was no dialogue.

Gayahuaniel 12-28-2003 06:57 AM

Karl Urban was one of the most impressive actors out of the whole movie. Next to Aragorn, who played a realoly fabulous role as Aragorn.
Eomer's part was to small. He was a strong, serious man who had contributed a lot to the story and it's a shame that PJ didn't make use of that. But he rocks!

Failivrin 12-28-2003 03:37 PM

oh my! Eomer is turning into Leggy! his Mumak stunt is reminiscent of Leggy's cave troll one in FOTR! be thankful that there are no more movies so his stunts can't get too OTT! i did actually like that bit though.
tacky fan girl? ME? i would like to see hi mget recognition too. it annoys me how everyone who was in the Fellowship gets so much more recognition than those who weren't. i mean, take Boromir and Faramir. In movie terms, Faramir was in two and Boromir was in one, but all the non- book people remember Boromir more because he was in the Fellowship.
let's start up a Karl Urban recognition campaign

Everdawn 12-28-2003 08:51 PM

quote:
His 'Merry's arms are too short' line was so funny

I thought that was a bit mean, had i been there i would have given him a hard tap on the arm!
But diddnt he look noble! That what i was thinking, Éomer will make a good king of Rohan, and i know that no one could have done it better.
