Elrond and Elros

Okay, guys, I have one of those dumb questions that just pops up in my mind every so often... were Elrond and Elros twins? The Encyclopedia of Arda says that they were both born c.525 of the First Age, but this doesn't mean that they were indeed twins.

I ask because I wrote a fanfiction about them, and since I couldn't find anything concrete I decided Elros was going to be a couple of years older and therefore help explain his choice of mortality. In a review I just received, the person told me they were twins, and it's just been bugging me. I *must* know because if they are indeed twins, I'll change the story -- I hate being wrong! Okay, enough rambling from me... someone please help!

The Annals of Arda claims that they're twins too.

Thanks, guys! Argh... this means adjustments must be made...

What I would like to know about it is if they were identical or not? Does anyone know?

Boromir88 08-27-2004 09:59 PM

actually 3 generations

and now that I think about it there were 3 generations. The first being Elwing's brothers Elurin and Elured, so moving Elrond and Elros down to 2, and Elladan and Elrohir to 3.

I have always assumed so..... certainly I think it says that Elladan and Elrohir were alike ...... and twins always seem identical in literature.....

I somehow don't see them as identical, although they probably were. Since they had to have been very much different in their attitudes towards life, perhaps their very demeanors set them apart. Let's just say you'd probably never mix them up!

I too always have assumed twins as identical ,but Elrond and Elros may have been an exception I suupose.

Has Tolkein ever written about them being indentical??

I also wonder if elf twins could be females for I have never seen any mention of twin females in what I have read. Anyone know? Another thing, my friend who is a twin told me that when you are a girl twin you have an 80% chance of having twins. With elves it seems to come from the male side, for Elrond was a twin and he had twins.

rutslegolas 09-02-2004 11:56 PM

Well it certainly seems to be that way ,I too have never heard of female elf twins in Lotr ,does anyone know about twin female elves in Lotr??

Nimrodel_9 09-28-2004 03:29 PM

No, I don`t believe any of Tolkien`s books mention female Elf twins. I`m sure there were, they just didn`t do anything particularly important, so he didn`t mention them. Women play a much bigger role in The Silmarillion, LotR, ect. than in other fantasy that I have read, though.
