Movie swords, which one would you use.
 

Let’s say you’re going to go adventure around in Middle-Earth and you were going to take a sword from the LOTR movies which would you take with you?

For example, would you take Glamdring, it’s subtle leaf-shaped blade adding extra weight to your blow, Aragorn’s ranger sword, with it’s long thrusting point and two or single handed size, The Witch-King’s massive two handed style with it’s ricasso (The blunt part of the blade just in front of the cross-guard) allowing for spear like thrusts, or the Galadhrim soldier’s sword, with it’s massive cleaver-like blade?

Or any of the other swords.

Personally, it would be Boromir's sword, your typical gondorian broadsword, that packs a powerful punch. Or, Theoden's sword, Herugrim, the two horse heads for the hilt is kind of neat.

Anduril all the way. Or Eowyn's sword, just because it was hers.

Probably either Isildur's sword, which I quite like, or the Witch-King's sword which would suit my stature fairly well. ;)

Theodens sword is the best looking sword, but I think I would rather have a hand and a half, or a two handed sword, so I will have to say I would take Aragorn's ranger sword.


TB12: Dynasty

I too would have Elrond's sword (the one Arwen borrowed when she rescued Frodo ) because it was meant to be Idril's sword brought from Gondolin and it is inscribed in elvish with something about it being a noble sword for a noble lady ... which is rather nice. I saw it when the LOTR exhibition came to London and it was gorgeous. Only caveat would be that it might not be the best choice for fighting on horseback. Especially if you aren't as dextrous as an elf... poor old Asfaloth might get his ears trimmed...

I would prefer one of the swords used by the Elvish Army as seen in the Prologue. The curved blade and handle make it look like one could really swing it around. And being made by Elves has to help too.

I would want to use the Urak - Hai Scimitar. They are big and badass. There nice and powerful and would burst through flesh like a knife on butter. I love the size of them. They may be slow but pack the killing blow.

Were they even sharp? It always looked to me that the mass-produced scimitars had no edge. Anyone remember a scene where the swords are being 'pounded out' on an anvil?

I thought that they were to be big hunks of metal used primarly to beat down an opponent.

Yea they are sharp. I remember a scene in TTT where they were being made. There was an anvil where they were being produced as well. The points on them were sharp. I guess your suppose to catch you roponant in the nook in the scimitar and the sharp blade at the top of the metel cuts though the flesh/armour

For cleaving orc skulls to cutting down a Mumakil's legs you don't use puny swords! Give me a nice Dwarven axe! Lots of power with two handed strokes and you can use the butt to fend off the hordes. Plus if it's made by a Dwarf you know it won't break. And if the Ents start getting uppity...

Which axe then, would you use, oh short gruff and heavily bearded one? ;) :D

I find Gimli's axe to be quite nice.

The head is not so large as to cause you to fly off balance and leave yourself open (think a Great Axe). However it is rather hefty and double-edged which makes for good orc slaying.

Snorri, go with Durin's Axe. Sure, it's somewhere in Moria, but with the Balrog 'having *flown* the coup,' you have a chance of getting it.

And can MEers communicate with the Dead? If so, ring up Balin.

Out of all the elven blades (in keeping with my somewhat split Elven/Gondorian personality) I'm divided between the huge weapon used by the Galadhrim infantry and Haldir's sword.

I love Glamdring. It's so simple, but very sleek and elegant. I do also adore the Witch-King's, though... so gothic and creepy. Perhaps I'd use them both depending on what my mood is.

Blades by Brown also has a great LotR section, with helms and shields and all.

Actually, I think the Witch-King's is almost normal-looking compared to the swords used by the other Nazgul.

Ah, that is indeed an evil blade, every inch worthy of its wielder.

I still prefer the Witch-King's sword to those of the rest of the Nazgul, especially for the cool designs on the crossguard and the middle of the grip, and the funky-shaped pommel.

Do we even see Sauron's sword in the movies? Or perhaps a better question would be, does he use it? All I remember was him swinging that big ol' mace around...

I think it might have been intended for his duel with Aragorn at the end of RotK.

I'm not exactly sure how heavy they were. The Weapons & Warfare book claims a weight of about 20 lbs, but that seems more accurate to the Berserker's sword. Still, the falchion the Uruk swordsmen use would be a fairly hefty weapon, and would probably inflict serious damage if it actually struck anything.
However, the crudely honed blade would not likely hold an edge very well, and the spike, while probably capable of penetrating most armor, would require some care to use, as it could easily become stuck in a shield, allowing your opponent to pull your weapon aside and strike at you.

Arwen's sword was most beautiful and probably light enough for me... :)

I already carry Sting nearly every time I go out the door and onto the path that leads ever on...I think the other hobbits on the road look at me a little strangely! :D

I don't think too many of them would be too heavy for you. Most medieval swords weighed between 2 and 3 lbs, with a really heavy two-handed greatsword weighing in at around five pounds.

No, I meant Sauron. Aragorn was originally intended to fight him in person at the Black Gate.

As far as swords go... I guess I'd choose either Eowyn's sword (very pretty!) or Sting. Does anyone know where you can get Eowyn's sword? She's always been my hero, but I can rarely find anything related to her.

I think that i might want to use the fighting knives of Legolas, but if i were to choose a sword i think i would use Anduril. is just so awesome.

I'd say Eowyn's sword, except that the guard isn't much of a guard. (Spoiled, OK? A foil-fencer wants a bell-guard, and a sabre fencer wants a basket-guard. I did both.) Considering all that.... I'd be happy with Aragorn's ranger sword. Anduril's a bit long for me.

But given my choice of any weapon-- Legolas' first, Mirkwood bow. Nice.

I have a tie between Anduril and Legolas' dual blades (I believe they have no name). From a tactical stand point 2 blades give you a huge advantage. Using one to parry an incoming blow, the other could be used to dispatch the enemy. The problem with that weapon, is that they are shorter than swords like Anduril, so parrying would be more difficult. In conjunction with Legolas' bow and arrow though, the blades become unstoppable. For example: take down approaching enemies with ur bow and then when they get overwhelming and get close, whip out 2 short swords to quickly dispatch enemies in melee range. The thing advantage about Anduril though, over Legolas' blades, is that it is much larger allowing for much more powerful stabs/cuts and easier parries. In addition to the swings being more powerful, the swords size would make it so the area of slicing would be larger (and you could hit many enemies at once) If involved in a huge fight in which are surrounded by scores of enemies, this would be would ur weapon of choice to cut em all down.

Would have to be Andúril for me, nothing else compares to the flame of the west :)
