Gandalf's supposed death

Gandalfs supposed death is a bit unbelievable. At the start of the two towers it shows gandalf falling with balrog towards a huge lake but when discussing it he says he fought on a mountain peak. Someone fill me in!

Basically, he took the stairs.

There's an "endless stair" that goes from the bottom of the Abyss to the peak of Zirag-Zigil. He fought the Balrog up there until he at last killed it on top of the mountain.

is it just me or would you be more concerned about fighting a balrog or climbing some stairs. It seems unpracticle.

the balrog seemed to be fleeing from Gandalf. That's why they ended up at the top of the mountain. He had nowhere left to go. see gandalf's explanation in the 'White Rider' chapter of two towers book.

What they said, and Gandalf did die.
