Rhosgobel

Home of Radagast the Brown. Rhosgobel was located on the western edge of Mirkwood. Its precise location is not certain. Gandalf told Beorn that Radagast lived near the southern borders of Mirkwood. Scouts who sought traces of the Nine Ringwraiths after the Council of Elrond came down the Gladden River and over the Gladden Fields to Rhosgobel. The first working map that J.R.R. Tolkien made of Middle-earth shows Rhosgobel situated on the edge of Mirkwood just south of the Gladden Fields. However, a note appended to the essay on the Istari in Unfinished Tales places Rhosgobel farther north, between the Old Forest Road and the Carrock.

Etymology:

Rhosgobel is said to mean "russet walled town," "russet enclosure" in Sindarin. The word rhosc means "brown." The word gobel means "walled town." Tolkien also related the name Rhosgobel to "Brownhay," where brown refers to Radagast's color and hay is a hedge or wall.
