about Sauron....

what is he exactly? I was pretty sure he was a Maia (after reading the Silm) but now this other person is telling me he's not a Maia...that he's from a place called Maia. Way to confuse me.

Sauron was a Maia, that is a sort of semi-Vala (so is Gandalf, Saruman, Melian, etc etc). He happened to be a quite powerful one that Morgoth corrupted to his service, and is still governed by the will of Morgoth that lingered when the Valar cast him into the Void. For a long time he could change shape, like in 'Of Beren and Luthien' in the Silm, he becomes a wolf.

I think that's right, anyway

I couldn't have put it better.

I was thinking that if Souron hadn't been corrupted, maybe he would have been sent as an Istari? Ofcourse there would be no reason to send them if there was no souron. But if they did send them, would Souron have gone?

He probably would have been considered for the post, he was a pretty powerful guy.

But then we don't know what he was like before he was corrupted, the Istari who were sent probably had to go through a kind of screening process. Judging by his evil nature he was probably interested in the forging of things and machinery, stuff like that, and that part was already covered by Saruman!!

Sauron could change into fairer, or werewolf/vampire/serpent shape until his body was annihilated at the sinking of Numenor. Then he built a greater darker body for himself after a few years, but it wasn't strong enough because Isildur managed to cut off his finger. After thousands of years had passed, he came back as a great eye wreathed in flame, then a newer supposedly more powerful body-but still ugly, he never regained his ability to look fair. He presumably had blackish (not like humans with dark skin but black) skin and red eyes. He could have been normalish looking (except his eyes) but not after his bodies total mutilation. He was bald in my eyes.

Sauron was a Maia in the service of Aulė, but he became a fallen Maia in the service of Melkor.

Yes: welcome to the Barrow Downs! The place where if you say one word in your post, you are bound to get 300 in your reply (that's a good thing), but also the place where if the one word is wrong, edit it quickly! Haha: just found that out the hard way...no names...Oh well...well: welcome! Have fun! Learn about Tolkien and, if you come to the chat, please, please, please talk about Tolkien sometime? The ops have a hard time making that happen.

Oh: I'm not an op...far from it! I'm a lowly chatter, just like you!

Thank you for your welcome, but I already come to the BD-chat for about two years now. I just wasn't logged in on the forum, but now that I am I see lots of discussions of which I can debate endlessly.

And yes, if I come to the chat again I will talk about Tolkien although it's hard to make all the ppl talk about Tolkien.
