HoME question

This might sounds stupid, but Its tough to find copies of all of Tolkien's works. If its not too tough can someone post how many volumes there are of the HoME series and what are there names?

Tar Elenion 01-06-2002 06:58 PM

1 Book of Lost Tales pt. One
2 Book of Lost Tales pt. Two
3 The Lays of Beleriand
4 The Shaping of Middle-Earth
5 The Lost Road
6 Return of the Shadow (HoL pt. 1)
7 The Treason of Isengard (HoL pt. 2)
8 The War of The Ring (HoL pt. 3)
9 Sauron Defeated (incl. HoL pt. 4)
10 Morgoth's Ring
11 The War of the Jewels
12 The Peoples of Middle-Earth

HoL= History of the Lord of the Rings.

One more question; which one of the volumes contains the fall of Gondolin? Thanks for the help.

Mithadan 01-06-2002 09:42 PM

Believe it or not, only the Book of Lost Tales II has the full Fall of Gondolin tale and that version was written in about 1918 or so. Other than the later Silmarillion-style versions, which are much shorter, the 1918 version is the only "full" telling of the story and it is rather dated and not in accord with much that JRRT later wrote. Tolkien's failure to finish the Gondolin tale which appears in Unfinished Tales is one of the most grievous losses to his readers.

Thanks Mithadan.

My bookstore is sold out of HoME's. But they do have all the seperate volumes in seperate books. Either it is a shortage of books because of the movie, or this is some type of elaborate scam to make me buy lots of individual books and pay more.

Thought Id share.

HoME's come as a set? I knew the HoL came as a set.

You can buy the complete HoMe in three limited edition volumes with a slip case. Over $100 for each volume. Amazon.co.uk has them.
