In Tolkien's books there are many different kinds of dragons: flying ones, crawling ones, dragons which can spout fire, ones which can't, big ones, and smaller ones. Some are more like the Wurm idea, some more like the typical (Western, not Chinese) dragon.

One of the pictures drawn by Tolkien of Smaug is on the Barrow-Downs. It will at least show what ONE of the dragons looked like. It's right here
i've always imagined dragons being more like reptilian lizards rather than worms or snakes...it makes them seem more formidable and majestic. but mebbe that's just me.
I personally view ME dragons as basically the western dragon, but a bit more sleek and jagged (how is something both sleek and jagged??)
If you take a look at the Hobbit link on the main page and look at the synopsis it has a pic of Smaug the fire drake by Tolkien (that's what it says). It looks as if everyone took their cue from the man himself
No painter yet has come close to the detail that I would like to see Smaug in. Interestingly enough I imagined Smaug just as Tolkien drew him, in basic concept, but as I said before much more detailed. Why dont some of those D&D artists get over here?
I agree. They should get over here. Nice long quote there Elendur- I haven't read that text before. That painting by the man was too blurry- a computer rendition of the same painting would be quite good methinks
"The Hobbit" the movie has forever ingrained in my head an image of Smaug. I never really thought of Tolkiens dragons as western though, they seem much more elongated, but other than that I guess the western style seems to fit
There was a Hobbit movie!? Why do I not know that? They showed Smaug in all his majesty?
I don't believe you |
Yes, there is a "Hobbit" movie. It is a cartoon however and it is from the seventies, but i liked it, and i believe BW did as well. If you can't find it at a video rental store, then you might want to check out your local library, mine has it.

In medieval England and even later dragons were known as 'wyrms.' There's a wonderful tale of a wyrm besieging a castle in Durham.
On the issue of the movie, I did not like it. Whoever made it did not do much research. They even got the regular runes and the moon runes on the map switched (they called the regular runes the moon runes and vica versa) (the fact that I noticed that is strange, dontcha think?) Also, has anyone noticed the strange fact that the elves in the Hobbit movie are goblin-like green things?
Well I saw the movie years before I read anything by Tolkien. I think I might have been in school, maybay not quite. And I don't know if I have seen it since reading Tolkien, so many things that I would probably noticed passed by without a thought, although the elves where ugly kinda like anime elves if I remember correctly, but I though Gollum was really good.

ok, like everyone else has been saying, there are many types of dragons in middle earth created by tolkien.
the types are countless. Glaurung, the father of all dragons, winged or not, was wingless, yet still held great power. Smaug, a winged fire dragon, also held great power. Its like comparing humans, we are not all alike, and some of us look totally different. |
Only some?

Yeah, I've seen a few people who don't look anything like each other.
I meant the vast majority
There's a painting of Smaug that shows him attacking the Laketown, I saw it first in the Tolkien Bestiary and rather liked it.
Tolkien also envissioned mechanical dragons that were used to attack Gondolin, but it wasn't put in the Silm. There is some great discussion about mechanical dragons and dragons in general in the new Silm project.
