A bat named Orcrist

A nice link to a correction in the NY times. - http://gothamist.com/2011/05/08/is_t...imes_corre.php

Better know your Tolkien first the next time you want to name items after things from the books! :D

And by the way, I find "Anglachel" would be a much better name.

I like it! Some good comments too.

Too right Eomer! Some deserve to be honoured even I think by otiose reproduction:

Quote:

Better to have christened it Glamdring the Foe-Hammer. Carved in First Inning of Arda in the lost Noldorin city of Louisville.
Quote:

And from the bat rang a cold voice in answer: "Yes, I will drink thy blood gladly, that so I may forget the blood of The Texas Rangers my masters, and the blood of Cole Hamels who unjustly ruined your perfect game against the Phillies. I will slay thee swiftly."
Quote:

a REAL fan would have named it Anduril... Just sayin'
Quote:

Psh the paltry blade of a minor island chieftain, its temper already broken once by a mere herald of Morgoth. No, Orcrist was forged in the hidden city of Gondolin by the Noldor at the end of their glory, & it has drank deep of orcs, dragons & balrogs. Give me an elf-blade any day.

Tolkienlings truly are a glorious race. "Mordicai, vampire narwhal", you have my allegiance

BUT the obvious error pointed out in the letter re: Orcrist is not even the only one! Hrunting is NOT the sword Beowulf uses to kill Grendel's mother; given to our hero by Unferth, it fails him underwater as no mortal blade can touch the Grendelkin. Only a Giant-forged blade provided by Divine Providence does the job...

I feel the Prof would modestly think this correction an even more important one
