Sauron was jealous of the fun Morgoth had with Maeglin. So, he decided to let Beren and Luthien get away from Tol Sirion--Sauron couldn't stand Luthien's voice (sounded like a canary, really, all this 'Nightingale stuff' meh) but knew that daddy Morgoth would fall for it. It was all part of Sauron's grand plan, to have Morgoth deposed (really, Sauron was always unhappy about being second in charge, so he organised for Earendil to get that Silmaril to Valinor).
This all happened because Morgoth and Sauron had a fight over who was the Evilest. What happened was, Sauron made Eol. Eol was really an Orc. That's why Aredhel was captured by Eol and Maeglin was then born. Then, Maeglin (all part of Sauron's plan) was 'corrupted' by Morgoth, and so, Gondolin fell. But that wasn't the point.
Anyhow, wait, I'm getting lost....you get the vibe--finally, Eonwe and co get all angry and decide to sink Beleriand. "That's that!" mua ha ha! Sauron said, in the Black Book of Eastmarch.....
anyone want to take off from this story and keep it moving? :)
