Hard choice, but I'd go for Narya.

Alright, mobility, cutting edge in hand-to-hand-combat, and the mysterious powers of a wizard's knob-on-the-end staff are all important.
But the Ring of Fire is it what enhances Gandalf's nature of the Kindler greatly, and this was, after all, what caused the hobbits to rise.

Oh, and could you still add 'His pipe' to the list, BW? <img src=wink.gif ALT=";)">

Yeh i would have the staff it saved them many a time but same as the other stuff but it would be cool having a staff to do magic and stuff

Staff for me. It seems to be the source of most of his power, or what it is conducted through. Plus, hey was known as the elf of the wand.

I would say Narya, for all the power he had and the things he accomplished they would all have been for naught if it were not for Narya's power to strengthen the hearts of the free peoples, that they would find it in themselves to oppose Sauron as they did. For example: Had Gandalf not been at the Battle of the Pelennor Fields perhaps there would not have been enough courage among the defenders of Gondor to withstand the Witch King and his armies.

Surely Shadowfax wasn't a possession, but a wild horse who chose to go with Gadalf? Just a thought.

Otherwise, I'd have to agree that his staff was probably the best, though all the things on the list were vital.

Excellent question chief!

Here is my take on it.
While the ring of fire was no trinket, it was an artifact of High-Elven stature.
The staff of the isari however seemed to contain an incarnating of the wizards powers as Maia, Think back on the reference of Gandalf 'collecting all five' as if then he would have all of the respective wizards power. And once saruman's is broken we never see him work w/ power. Only his voice is left as Gandalf warns.

So for whatever reason - it was so.
Their staffs were of an artifact of the Maia [if not infact created by the Valar] and so in essence superior to anything created solely by the elves in my opinion.

Wether another race [or even wizard] could do anything with one of them is another question [w/out answer I would say], as they may have been solely 'keyed' to their owners.

I answered Shadowfax.

I took the poll at face value, rather than as a trick
question about &quot;possession&quot; etc.

The wands are a potent part of the wizard's own power, but
didn't Gandalf break his own on the Bridge of Kazaddum? He
was still able to defeat the Balrog without it, though he
made good use of Glamdring, I'm sure.

Narya was indeed potent, and a great help to Gandalf.

But I chose Shadowfax because the great beast was indeed
NOT an artifact or devise or weapon! Shadowfax of his own
will gave Gandalf exactly what was needed, being in the
right place at the right time.

I would like to think that Gandalf could have improvised
around the loss of any other item, but being WHERE he needed
to be WHEN he needed to be there was absolutely indispensible.

Not even the eagles could have done that.

I still am convinced that his pipe was important, too.
It gave him relieve, 'drove the bad thoughts away', and probably annoyed Saruman when Gandalf blew the famous 9+1 smokerings.

The pipe? I think the his most valuable asset from the pipe was what he smoked in the pipe.
But from the original 4 items i would have to say Glamdring was my favorite, Narya was a very useful asset, his staff was for walking among other things, and Shadowfax was the iquivilent (spelling?) of a muscle car to show off with.

Futhering on my earlier post in this thread:

Gandalf didn't do anythign directly, all of his acomplishments were through others, so _his_ direct power is less important than his power(through Narya) to strenghten the hearts of the free peoples.

Ohhh I don't know they were all pretty important to him. I think things would have been fated differently if he was without one of them.

Narya, You don't see all the Maiar going around with staffs as the only way to their power.

I like the pointy hat.

I say Narya, because it was one of the last rings of power that Sauron had not found, and it was an accomplishment for Gandalf to possess the ring and keep it safe from The Dark Lord.
The runner up would be his staff, for reasons already stated above.

Hmmmm, I agree with Tigerlily. Narya had to have been an enormous help, Maiar or no Maiar.

Hmmm... Shadowfax was indicative of Gandalf's influence over others, and without a horse of Shadowfax's speed, much of what Gandalf accomplished would not have been timely (ex. the Battle of Helm's Deep). Narya was an Elven thing, and he could do without his staff, but Shadowfax was indispensible in TTT.
