How Old...?

I always knew that Galadrial was old but when I actually thought about for a while I realised she must be amazingly old!! I wondered if anyone had a rough idea of her age during the War of the Ring.

Sje was born during the Years of the Trees, but i don't knw exactly when. She lived thru the first, secing and third ages. At the very end of the Third Age (3021), so that would be at least 7045 years.

Ya, she is at least 6480 years old. She was one of the first elves to come to Middle earth from Valinor. She lived some time before that as well though.

hmmm, not bad for a 7065 year old

This is probably going to flip you out, but Galadriel is much older than that!

According to the Encyclopedia of Arda

She was born during the Years of the Trees. When the Elves awoke at Cuiviénen, Melkor was chained. This period was 2900 years. She was probably born within 900 years of that time. This would make her at least 2000 years old when the trees were killed.

Then came the 1st Age, which last 583 years. It ended with the War of the Wrath and the Distuction (sinking) of Beleriand.

The 2nd Age lasted 3441 years and ended with the Last Alliance. Then the 3rd Age, which was 3021 and ended when the Elves sailed to Valinor.

This would make Galadriel around 9000 years old

Dang! What kind of Oil of Olay does she use? (Er, rather, that would probably be 'Oil of Olwe'...?)

Bonk .... you should stick that on the "pun" page.

Thank you!

Um, I looked 'round the Downs and couldn't find a Pun Page. Could you please direct me?

It's in Middle Earth Mayhem - Tolkien Puns, but anyways, here's the link.

9000 sounds about right. I mean the woman lived in Valinor in the time of the two trees Telpriion and Laurelin. She crossed the Helcaraxe after the destruction of the two trees! She has seen a lot!!
When I saw the age 6,480 i knew that couln't be true because when ELrond left Middle Earth, he was 6,520, and he's waaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy younger than Galadriel.

I don't think that site you named took into account the difference in Valarin Years and Years of the Sun. A Valarin Year, which was how elves kept track of time until the rising of the Sun and the First Age, was somewhere near 10 Years of the Sun or maybe even 144. Which could make Galadriel much much older.

Joy 09-16-2002 11:20 AM

The site did note, Under the index Years of the Trees, that a Valarin Year was 9.4 some odd years. So that, in our terms, was about 14,900 years.

It stated that some 10,000 years had passed from the time of the Trees to the Awakening. Then Morgoth was was chained for 2900 years, the time of 3 Ages.

Thanks Joy and elengil! I posted that (and a few other groaners) in the Puns-section! (Good to know that's there! )
