Okay, I got this idea from moving moments. What were some of the funniest things in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings?
I'll start with one, a direct quote from the Hobbit:
He (Bilbo) was feeling very queer indeed in his head by this time after the dreadful adventures of the last three days with next to nothing to eat, and he found himself saying aloud: &quot; Now I know what a piece of bacon feels like when it is suddenly picked out of the pan on a fork and put back on the shelf!&quot;
&quot;No you don't!&quot; he heard Dori answering,&quot;because the bacon knows that it will get back in the pan sooner or later; and it is to be hoped we shan't. Also eagles aren't forks!&quot;
&quot; O no! Not a bit like storks--forks, I mean,&quot; said Bilbo sitting up and looking anxiously at the eagle who was perched close by. He wondered what other nonsense he had been saying, and if the eagle would think it rude. You ought not be rude to an eagle, when you are only the size of a hobbit, and are up in his eyrie at night!

I laughed when the fellowshipwas at the gates of Moria. After Gandalf tell them he dosen't know the password. quote: &quot;What are you going to do then?&quot; asked Pippin &quot;Knock on the door with your head, Peregrin Took,&quot; said Gandalf &quot;but if dose not shatter them, and i am allowed a little peace from foolish questions, I will seek for the opening words.&quot;

I also think the other reprimands Gandalf gives Pipin are funny too. I do, however, feel rather sorry for Pipin. Him being the youngest of the fellowship, trying to prove himself. Being so reprimanded by the leader in front of all must have been hard on him.

ah, I like those too..

I had to laugh when the orcs know that the Rohirrim are after them and one of the northerners says
&quot;but what are we going to do at sunrise?&quot;
And Ugluk replies:
&quot;Go on running. What do you think? Sit on the grass and wait for the Whiteskins to join the picnic?&quot;
I always got to laugh about that.

But there are so many amusing parts in those books....

And he that breaks a thing to find out what it is has left the path of wisdom</p>

Ah as eowyn you have reminded me of when Pippen tells Gandalf that he wishes to know everything but the answers to his questions would suffice for then!

Sneaking!

I love Gollum's tirade after Sam accuses him of sneaking.

I was just reading another part that made me laugh out loud...

Saruman refers to the hobbits as rag-tag before he is shut in Orthanc and a little while later Merry says...

'Are we riding far tonight, Gandalf?' asked Merry after a while. 'I don't know how you feel with small rag-tag dangling behind you; but the rag-tag is tired and will be glad to stop dangling and lie down.'

Pippin singing Bilbo's Bath Song and imitating a fountain that &quot; leaped on high&quot; and Frodo finishing in the kitchen!!!
Oh my another, I just got to this part in the book and I laughed out loud! (Getting very strange looks from my father as he watched Entertainment tonight.) The minstrel singing the lay of nine-fingered Frodo and the Ring of Doom when Sam cries out &quot; O great glory and splendor! And all my wishes have come true!&quot;

When Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas finally meet Merry and Pippin and Gandalf is predicting their invariable doom, then one of the hobbits says, &quot;Gandalf has been saying cheerful things like that all day.&quot; It wasn't very funny really, but it made me laugh.

I love the conversations between Sam and Gollum, particularly the &quot;sneak&quot; one. I always laugh when Frodo, deadly serious, tells Gollum not to take names upon himself, and Gollum sulks, and says he has to take what's given to him.

When Frodo is tired of the giving of Bilbo's farewell-presents and all the hobbits (uninvited) searching for Bilbo's 'gold', Otho and Lobelia come and Merry politely answers them: 'Frodo is indisposed' To which Lobelia says: 'Hiding you mean'
And shortly after when the S-B´s finally left again came knocking on the door, and Frodo feels it can wait. Then comes Gandalf's head before the window, saying: 'If you don't let me in Frodo, I shall blow your door right down your hole and out through the hill.'

My little sister is reading though the books and she reminded me of something last night:

This is, of course, Pippin speaking to Bergil.
