What is up with the whole "setting sail" thing?
I'm really confused on the subject. Probably because I'm just on book 1, but where DO the elves and ringbearers go? Do they sail to another world and start anew? Do they sail and die? What? Any insight would be great. Thanks

I hope I don't ruin your story-reading, but if you really want to know...
When the ringbearers and elves sail from the Gre Havens, they go to Tol Erraessa, like an after-life world. Before the elves went to Valinor, but in the wrath of the Valar it was shut off to all but few. To put it simply, when the elves (or ringbearers) want to fade away without death, the ride to the Grey Havens, take a ship and sail to the Undying Lands. ((sry if the information isn't completely accurate, this little elf is out of practice but I'll edit out any mistakes when I get the Silm back)) |
If you haven't read the entire Lord of the Rings, than I strongly suggest you turn of your computer now and start reading and don't come back until you have finished it.
This may sound harsh and rude, but if you know things which happen later in the story early on, then it will ruin a big part of the experience for you. |
It will also help you to read the Silmarillion. It has all kinds of background stuff in it that will help you understand the elves better.

Naw, it's not harsh and rude at all, I agree, I'm reading em slowly, alot to digest, the books are.

I would seriously consider reading them as soon as possible. Some of the things said on this message board can confuse a lot of people... They go to the Grey Havens, which is in the West, they go there to live the rest of their time out. Happy Reading!
